The main goal of copywriting is conversion and sales. Knowing the fundamentals is important to do that,  and not just slapping words onto a screen because they "feel right". There's methods out there. Studies. Psychology at work, tons of templates, structures, and methods, that work time and time again. Especially in B2B and SaaS.

I didn't go in half arsed. I wanted to make sure I GOT this, to not be a fraud who thinks they're God's next gift in the copywriting world. I needed to know the rules, what worked, and have it told by people that bring in millions in their lifetime. 

And that's what I did. I understand that the first time might not work. But I understand that with a bit more refining. A bit more optimization. Some A/B testing. Incredibly deep research that almost seems obvious...

It all amounts to your money being made back, or I'll eat my hat.

Unique Prototypes

Ken, the founder and CEO, hired an agency to build his website. However, the agency couldn't build anything without copy. So Ken found me.

He had a tight deadline, but was a nice guy, so I accommodated. Within 2 weeks, I came up with copy for his entire website, making sure the fundamentals were there, being multiple CTAs, contact details in the header, and including everything he wanted to include. 

Check the home page document below for an example of how I pulled this off. His site isn't live right now, but once it is, I'll update this experience.

One of my first jobs on Upwork, I approached Teresa to write landing page copy for a tool called Share2Get, for upto11.

Applying all copywriting fundamentals, I aimed for simplicity and clear messaging, due to this tool being quite the unknown in this industry. Not entirely unknown as similar tools have been made in the past, but this tool was a more modern approach to previous efforts.

The goal was not to confuse the prospect, and to avoid confusing jargon. Things that are viewed as a relative unknown, invite more risk assessments, so it was my aim to make the copy as clear as possible to alleviate that. 

The final landing page copy was changed from my original submission and I had no opportunity to A/B test, but if what's currently up is getting them results, then I wish them well.

Kudiwave

Kudiwave was an interesting one. Different country entirely, different financial restrictions, it was unfamiliar ground, and a lot of important research was needed...

It's a damn good thing I don't stray away from difficult topics, ey?

The research was in-depth, and it was a challenge to understand the why's and the how's of the countries national restrictions on spending abroad. But I did it, and I understood why Kudiwave was incredibly important in what it is.

Sessions

Sessions just seemed like the next step up in terms of video-conferencing, so crawling through their SaaS service only made me think...

"Ok, why has this taken so long to be made?"

It's a UX friendly platform. It makes sense for internal communications, it HAS everything you think you'd need to make the working process easier and more fluid. 

They're going places. Just give it a few years, you'll see.

It's quite difficult to bring out the features and benefits of an online file conversion service. What's the USP? Why do people need convincing to use this tool, when it should be an after-thought in the users' mind...

Turns out, yeah. They kinda DO need an explanation. Because when most people use a tool for one purpose, they don't realise there's other tools. And they might not know why those tools should be used, so it might be your best interest to explain them.

And that's what I did.

At Blacksmith Marketing, we tackled the e-commerce particulars for a wide variety of clients. Everything from a garden centre, to an engineering firm, to a neighbourhood podiatrist - it was certainly a mixed bag that gave me a lot of experience across different styles and platforms.

I was responsible for website copy, social media management, SEO and editorial work for as many as five core clients at a time. And I even found the time to keep up Blacksmith's own blog, as well as write one 1000-word article per month for Park Home & Caravan magazine.

But the crowning achievement of my time here was being able to proof and edit the British Coal Staff Superannuation Scheme Report and Accounts for 2016-2017. It gave me an interesting look into the hitherto (fancy!) unknown world of the British mining industry, and was a pleasure to be involved with.

Trine Magazine was one of the very first places I got my start in professional writing. It was a pop culture news website set up by Huddersfield University alumni, which I contributed articles to for my final year portfolio.

This position taught me the ins and outs of online news article writing, including house styles, pitching ideas, sourcing material, and researching topics. Whether it was video games, films, TV or music, I wrote about it

Fired Up Corporation

As a fresh-faced graduate straight out of university, my first professional post was a 12-week internship with Fired Up Corporation in Huddersfield. During my time there, I handled the product copy, blog, SEO and social media posting for four different brands under the Fired Up umbrella. This gave me a good range of styles and tones to work in, and it was my responsibility to make sure they all sounded distinct.

What was really special about this position was that I got to write a press release for the Huddersfield Examiner. The article detailed an upcycling scheme - we donated empty cardboard delivery boxes to a local child-care centre and asked the kids to go wild with their imaginations. Castles, pirate ships, pink cottages, they did it all and had a fab time. It was wonderful being able to share such a great article with the town, while highlighting the importance of recycling (and the kids had bags of fun too!)

Chipper Times

The Chipper Times had a simple message - we need more good news. It was a student-run pop culture website dedicated to all things happy. In fact, that was pretty much the tagline. As sub-editor of the gaming section, it was my responsibility to curate article submissions, making sure they lined up with our style and tone.

I wrote several news articles and special interest pieces, from the hottest upcoming releases to the representation of LGBTQ+ across gaming (there're some great examples, by the way). Plus, I had the great pleasure of interviewing Shirley Curry, the Skyrim-obsessed grandma who shattered the YouTube norm.

I was also part of the social media team, making sure our message reached as many people as possible. And I spearheaded my own series called Unsung Tales - the best of history's unfairly forgotten gems and why you should find a way to experience them today.

I'm a copywriter. I have been for the past, oooh, seven years now. In that time I've worked with a few different businesses and creative agencies, helping them sort out their SEO, blogs, product copy, editorial... You name it, I've done it.

What I love about writing is the ability to take the reader on a journey. Our words shape people's reality, their perceptions. They can change minds and, if you're good enough, change the world. Even the way we write matters; sentence length, structure, punctuation, puns, idioms - it's all gravy.
