Have you ever noticed someone ZONING OUT when you’re speaking?  

Here’s why - and how to fix it. 

People zone out because you’re either: 

1.) Talking too much

2.) Speaking without a clear point

3.) Delivering everything in a monotone voice

If you're not speaking in a way that holds someone's attention…

Their mind will wander. 

So instead of thinking:
“People are bad listeners”

Take responsibility and think:
“What can I do to keep people engaged?”

3 things: 

1.) Get to the point quickly

2.) Be concise when expanding on it 

3.) Use variety in your voice 

When you speak with clarity and energy, 

People are more likely to stay locked in. 

So give this a try.

This speaking mistake makes you sound weak.

(Even if you've said something strong)

It's finishing your points the wrong way.

Let's break this down. 

Have you ever started saying something in a meeting,

But then you didn't know how to end?

So you end with something like this:

- “So... yeah"
- “And yeah, that's what I think"
- “I think that's all"
   
And because you weren't sure how to end, your voice might have trailed off a bit too.

You lost some volume and vocal power.

What's the problem?

People remember what they hear last the most.

(It's called the Recency Effect in cognitive psychology)

So if you end on a weak note...

You (and your point) are going to be seen as weaker.

Here’s the fix:

Restate your point for clarity.
(Use that as your go to move)

You can also end with a decision, next step, or takeaway.

Examples:
 
- “So overall, I’d recommend option 2.”
- “That’s why it's best we hold off until Q4.”
- “Ultimately, we're still over-relying on one channel."

A strong finish anchors your point.

It signals clarity, direction, and leadership.

Weak finishes sound unsure.

And even though your point is the same in both cases,

Which one do you think gives you a better chance of success?

I recommend recording yourself speaking in meetings to make sure you're not making this mistake.

After all...

If you don't know what you're doing wrong....

How are you supposed to fix it?

If you’re talking to someone important, DON’T do this. 

Don’t put them ABOVE YOU in the conversation. 

What does this mean? 

- Being too agreeable 
- Being too eager to please 

Example: 

Earlier today I’m listening to a sales call from one of my clients.

When the prospect would say something about his problem, my client would say: 

“Oh yes, absolutely, lots of people deal with that, that’s a great point” 

(Watch the video to hear the tone I used - that’s what matters most)

The words aren’t terrible, but the energy comes across as:

“I want you to like me” 
“I want you to accept me”

And it seems like you’re putting the other person above you.

It’s better to have a more neutral energy. 

And this is true no matter how big or important the other person is.

If you want to have more success with important people, speak to them as if you’re on a level playing field.

After all, you’re both humans, right?

I used to be the kid who avoided people at all costs.

Growing up on a farm near a small town, I was painfully awkward and a terrible communicator. 

Just the thought of speaking to a group made me sick. 

And when cell phones eventually came out,

I'd get anxious every time it rang. 

Even if I knew the person well 😅 

Today, I've coached over 330 people, written 3 bestselling books, and delivered a TEDx talk.

What changed wasn't an overnight breakthrough. 

It was learning that communication was a SKILL. 

And then deciding that it was worth improving.

- I studied the science behind confident speaking. 
- I learned and practiced relentlessly

I once ran a meeting so badly my manager asked if I was “feeling lightheaded.”

Not my finest moment.

I rushed.
I over-explained.
I bounced between points with zero structure.

Later that day, she came up to me in the lunch room. 

She said I needed to "take my time"

And "be more organized"

I learned something that day. 

People judge you based on your CONTROL. 

Control of your pace.
Control of your structure.
Control of how you articulate your points.

When your control isn't optimized, people respect you less. 

This happens all the time to people I speak with.

Now they might not be as bad as I was. 
(I was pretty bad lol) 

But they still want to more control over the way they communicate. 

Especially when they're on the spot. 
It's pretty common.

So if you ever feel yourself rushing or not being as clear under pressure, you’re not alone.

And you’re not stuck there.

Remember: Communication is a skill you can learn and excel at.

You got this.

If you want to sound supremely confident when speaking, this ONE thing needs to be mastered. 

Making sure your pace - the speed you speak at - is under control.

Many years ago I was in a team meeting…

And we were going around the room giving our updates for the week. 

As I was giving my update, my boss interrupted me (in front of everyone) and said:

“Ty, relax! It’s not a race.

You don’t get any prizes for finishing the fastest.”

I was super embarrassed when he said that, but he was right.

Speaking isn’t a race. 

And I did not get any prizes for finishing quickly.

(This also applies to other areas of life…😅)

Speaking too fast when nervous is a very common thing. 

Even with my high-level executive clients.

It’s common because it’s a natural response caused by some level of anxiety, discomfort, or pressure.

It makes you feel like whatever you have to say…

You just want to finish and to get it over with.

Do you ever speak too fast when you’re nervous?

What about when you’re not nervous?

“I didn’t say that the way I wanted to.”

That’s a sentence I hear a lot. 

Especially from people that expect a lot from themselves. 

They’re not confused. 
They’re not unprepared.

But they are overthinkers. 

And the words don’t always come out the way they planned. 

—> They might have spoke too much. 
—> Or their message felt scattered.
—> And they’re not sure how it came across. 

The problem is the following: 

You can know exactly what to say in your MIND. 

But that doesn’t mean it comes out of your MOUTH the same way.

That’s why it’s important to train. 

Train so that your mind and mouth get synced up. 

It’s like working out. 

If you train with:

1.) The right exercises 
2.) The right form
3.) The right volume 

You’ll make gains. 

This is the same thing.

So if you get frustrated with how you communicate sometimes…

Keep this in mind: 

—> You’re not “bad” at anything. 
—> You’re just untrained. 

So don’t give up on this. 

Once you start training the right way, you’ll be surprised at how good you can get.

It’s always the opposite.

Shocker, right? 

People want more confidence when speaking. 

Especially in high-pressure situations. 

- Big meetings
- Presentations
- Sales/pitch calls 
- Convos with execs
- Discussions w intimidating people 

AND they want to be less stressed. 

- Less nerves 
- Less anxiety 
- Less overthinking 
- Less “I wish I had said that differently” 
- Less wondering what people think of you 

I always measure and track these metrics with clients. 

Especially in the moments that matter most to them. 

And we see major differences over 90 days. 

On average:

Confidence at Start: 4/10
Confidence at End: 8/10

Stress at Start: 7.5/10
Stress at End: 3/10

Keep in mind, these metrics aren’t measuring conversations with best friends. 

(Most people are fine in those) 

They’re measuring progress in the difficult situations. 

But there’s no magic pill. 

I’ve just done this with 300+ people and know what works. 

So if you want to improve these things for yourself, have faith. 

There is a way. 

You got this.

If you want to speak with confidence, you need to stop ‘sitting in the dark.’ 

It’s costing you more than you think.
  
One of my clients described this perfectly:
 
“Improving my speaking feels like sitting in a pitch-black room.
 
And each week, you’re turning up the dimmer switch.”
 
When we started, his “room” was completely dark.
 
He couldn’t see what was holding him back.
 
But every week we worked together, the light got brighter.
 
And he started spotting the things he’d never noticed before:

— The small body language cues that chipped away at his credibility
— The weak, throwaway words that softened his impact
— The facial expressions that gave away his emotions
— The lack of clarity when speaking on the spot
 
These weren’t constant issues.
 
They only appeared in high-pressure situations.

But here’s the thing:
 
Once he saw them… he could change them.

Because you can’t fix what you can’t see, right?

If you've ever been  talked over in a meeting, here’s 1 thing to change immediately:

Start your points with clarity and conviction.

Not fluffy uncertainty. 

So instead of:
“I think this might be a good idea”

You’d say:
“This is a better path forward, and here’s why.”

Because the first version creates doubt.

And the second creates respect.

People who struggle with this often think it’s just their personality.

– “I’m not the kind of person who takes up space.”
– “I don’t want to sound too aggressive.”
– “I’d rather let others speak first.”

I hear this type of thing too often. 

But here’s what you need to know:

1.) You deserve to be listened to.
2.) You deserve to be taken seriously.
3.) You deserve to show up with powerful presence. 

One of the shifts I often work on with clients is helping them feel and sound more confident.

Once they make this change, everything else gets easier:

- They’re less stressed when put on the spot 
- Their ideas come out more clearly
- They feel more calm under pressure

This is how communication should feel.

Clear. Composed. Powerful.

And it’s absolutely possible for you.

Remember: communication is a skill you can learn.

(And excel at)

P.S. Do you ever get talked over?

A founder I'm working with was UPSET after a board meeting:

“I was trying to sound stronger and ended up rambling.”

He runs a $10M+ company.
Incredibly smart guy.

He does big numbers.
He has the vision.

But when he had to speak in big moments, he still overdid it sometimes. 

- Talked too fast.
- Explained too much.
- Added points that didn’t need to be there.

Not wrong... just too much.

And it made his message harder to follow.

“I could see them checking out,” he told me.

“It felt like I was trying too hard.”

How did we fix this?

We worked on: 

1.) Tight structure
2.) Clear pacing
3.) Cutting 30% of what he was saying

A few weeks later, an investor said to him:

“You seem more sharp lately.

I don't know what you're doing, but it's landing better.”

He was pumped. 

Strong communication isn’t about talking more.

It’s about sounding clear, confident, and credible.

And instead of feeling frustrated or annoyed...

(because you know you could be speaking better)

You get to feel confident and proud of the way you speak.

3 Silent Credibility Killers (that might be keeping you stuck)

One of my clients was stuck in the same Director role for years.

Smart guy. 
(Also a bit of an overthinker)

But he couldn’t figure out why he stopped progressing. 

After reviewing a few of his meetings, the issue was clear:

𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝟑 𝐂𝐬 𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐢𝐦 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤.

𝟏.) 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲

His explanations weren’t sharp or concise enough.
(Articulation of thoughts)

𝟐.) 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞

He was unconsciously sending signals of uncertainty at times. 
(Voice and body language)

𝟑.) 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧

He’d sometimes assume understanding without confirming. 
(Listening and paraphrasing)

To the average person, these things probably didn't seem like a huge deal. 

Which is why he had a good job and was well-liked. 

But the difference between *good* and *excellent* is what can set you apart from others. 

And that's how you keep moving up. 

So here's what we did:

→ Clarity: Trained his brain to speak clearly under pressure
→ Confidence: Removed the uncertainty signals 
→ Confirmation: Learned to pause & paraphrase the right way

A couple months after working together, he scored a VP role at another company. 

(Keep in mind, the program itself is 3 months, so I won’t sugarcoat this and say he got a new job overnight)

But if you ever feel:

- Less clear than you should be
- Less confident when it matters
- Stuck at a certain level in your career/business 

The good news... is that it's all learnable.

And it's my favorite type of work.

Can you relate to any of this?

“What would you rather be, a lion or a panda?”

“I’m me. 

Why would I want to be anything else?”

I think about this scene from time to time.

Not just because Ted Lasso is a great show.

But when we first start working together, clients sometimes say things like: 

“I still want to be genuine”
“I don’t want to be inauthentic”

And I appreciate this. 

But what if you’re trying to make changes to your speaking and get better?

How do you do that without sacrificing who you are?

Here’s one way to think about it:

It’s like you’re a video game character.

And as you go through different levels, you’re leveling up your character. 

You’re adding skills. 

You’re not CHANGING characters. 

You’re IMPROVING your character. 

But unlike a video game…

You get to reap the rewards of improved speaking in real life. 

- More confidence 
- Faster career advancement  
- More clients and sales 
- Less stress and overthinking 

And you gain the ability to positively impact others on a higher level. 

Not only with your ideas… 

But in the way you present them, how you make people feel, etc. 

Don’t sacrifice your authentic self. 

Level up and become the best version of you. 

(And please, use your powers for good 😅)

If you’re USUALLY confident when speaking, but certain situations still stress you out... you’re not alone.

I work with a lot of high-performers who are great at what they do.

But when the pressure’s on, their communication doesn’t always reflect that.

If you’re already confident MOST of the time, you don’t need to change much. 

You just need a plan to get you to the next level.

But with high-level stakeholders, she didn’t always like how she was coming across.

She’d rush through things or second-guess herself afterward.

But now that she’s completed my program: 

— She speaks with calm authority.
— She gets to the point clearly and quickly.
— And she leaves those conversations feeling proud of how she spoke.
