Haven was established over 40-years ago as an independent charity delivering specialist services to children and young people affected by domestic abuse.

"We are the only charity in Sheffield fulfilling this role, providing a range of needs-led services to children and young people aged 0 – 25 years old and their wider family. Inclusive practice is at the heart of everything we do and we are passionate about supporting all children and young people that have experienced domestic abuse, and their families. "

My role as a trustee is to ensure that the organisation pursues its purpose by developing and agreeing a long-term strategy that complies with its governing document, charity law and company law.

TOXTETH TV

Toxteth TV is a multi use media and training venue based near Liverpool City Centre, home to a number of arts, media, production and community organisations and companies, providing affordable office and creative space for film and community groups.

Toxteth TV works with the local community and particularly those who may not be in training, school, or employment on media projects and is committed to working with vulnerable or excluded groups of young people and adults offering a safe, accessible and forward thinking training and creative space.

As Creative Director I was responsible for sourcing funding, planning and implementing creative projects and promoting the organisation.

- Responsible for growth and development of both business and charity arms of the organisation.
- Line management of operations team and creative freelancers, up to 15 people.
- Sourced and managed government and lottery funded projects.
- Planned and implemented all creative projects, working with schools, community groups, local council and businesses/ networks across the region.
- Delivered local and national marketing and PR strategies to raise the profile of the business and charity.
- Managed events, media courses and training programmes in partnership with Liverpool Community College and other affiliated educational bodies.
- Trained young or vulnerable people in creative arts and filmmaking.

I set up Odd Theatre in 2004 after an internship with Augusto Boal's Theatre of the Oppressed in Brazil.
Odd Theatre works successfully across the country with vulnerable and excluded groups, particularly targeting offenders in prisons, secure units, drugs rehab and in the community.  Odd Theatre facilitates countless creative projects which explore issues and inspire positive change. 

This has included overseas work in a female prison in Lima, Peru.

At Odd Theatre I directed and managed all creative projects, facilitated training for staff and for external organisations, gave seminars on Applied Theatre and managed business aspects of the company including recruitment, accounting and partnership building.

- Established and directed a CIC working with  vulnerable and excluded groups in the UK and South America.
- Sourced and managed government and lottery funding to deliver transformation projects.
- Directed and managed creative courses and workshops in prisons and secure units across the UK. 
- Facilitated training for staff and external organisations including prison officers, police and probation.
- Delivered seminars on Applied Theatre in partnership with The University of Manchester.
- Managed all business aspects of the company including recruitment, accounting and partnership building.

In 2004 I founded Odd Arts, a charity that transforms lives through applied theatre and issue-based creative workshops in prisons across the UK and South America. 

I have been marketing director and non-exec director of independent digital & social agencies. In 2019 I co-founded Serotonin, now a multi-award winning creative digital agency, based in Manchester's Northern Quarter.

I am proud to be a Board Trustee of Haven, a charity that supports children and young people affected by domestic abuse.

Women can’t have it all. Or can we? 

PepsiCo’s former CEO, Indra Nooyi, has been criticised for years for her opinions on work-life balance.

One of the quotes that sticks with me: “I don't think women can have it all. I just don't think so. We pretend we have it all. We pretend we can have it all.”

I completely agree. Every major career or business decision comes with trade-offs.

For me, building Serotonin has meant saying no to other opportunities, missing out on time with friends and family, and often putting the business ahead of personal priorities.

Life is a series of trade-offs, building a business or not. 

The more useful question isn’t “can we have it all?” If you think that way, you’ll always be disappointed or exhausted. 

Instead, ask yourself:
What am I willing to trade off?
And what principles guide those choices?

That realisation has helped me lead with more intention, rather than chasing an impossible balance that doesn’t exist.

The biggest risk for legacy brands isn’t irrelevance.

It’s dissonance.

When the story you’ve been telling for decades no longer matches the reality people experience, trust erodes fast. And the longer the brand history, the harder it is to spot that drift.

Burberry is the perfect case study.

I started my copywriting career there in the Christopher Bailey era. On paper, Burberry was the pinnacle of British heritage luxury. But the lived reality told a different story: over-licensed, diluted, and tied to an image it never intended to own.

The comeback was remarkable. Burberry redefined how a heritage brand could behave.
- The first luxury brand to livestream a fashion show on Snapchat.
- One of the first to make collections instantly shoppable with “see now, buy now.”
- Collaborations that felt bold, unexpected, and modern.

And that reinvention hasn’t stopped. Burberry has leaned hard into its British roots but in ways that feel relevant to now.

From playful TikTok campaigns about the ritual of tea, to global activations like Burberry Streets that took over London, Seoul, and Shanghai, they’re showing how heritage can be reimagined for a new audience.

Bringing story and reality back into alignment, rather than simply defaulting to nostalgia.

That’s what strong brand work does. It doesn’t polish, it recalibrates.

Because if the story you’re telling doesn’t match the story people are living, you’re not building equity. You’re burning it.

And that’s why agencies matter. Not for the shiny campaigns, but for the uncomfortable perspective you can’t always find from the inside.

This week we had our Staff and Trustee Development Day at We Are Haven - the charity I support as a Trustee, that provides services for young people impacted by domestic violence.

We were working together to review and align on our Strategic Objectives, or certainly one of them:

Our Service & Impact. 

Reviewing what’s missing in our key actions, the success criteria that guides us, and aligning everything we do with a trauma-informed approach. 

CEO Samira Gjerde invited me to facilitate the session, and that put me in the privileged position to listen in on the nuances of conversation that came from group work.

I was struck by the language that was used:

"Warm, empowered, vital, fulfilled, important, committed, inclusive, dedicated, down to earth..."

I feel these words say it all about how special this organisation is.

Being a Trustee as well as a business owner is not for the fainthearted. It is a lot of work, on top of a lot of work; but for the words above, and for so much more - it is something that I am honoured to do.

Endurance isn’t just physical. It’s mental, strategic, and deeply human. 

In this week’s Create Brave podcast, I sit down with ultra-runner and friend Robin Leathley (@the.running.accountant on Instagram) to unpack the strategy, mindset and sheer determination behind his first 24-hour self-transcendence track race in Battersea Park.

As a member of Robin’s crew, I had the privilege of watching one of the most extraordinary comebacks I’ve ever seen. 

Across 24 hours of loops, setbacks, and breakthroughs, Robin executed a near-perfect race and achieved what had, at one stage, seemed impossible.

This conversation goes far beyond running. 

It’s about the mechanics of endurance – the training that builds resilience, the nutrition that sustains you, and the mental tools that help you navigate doubt and fatigue. But it’s also about something deeper: the role of support, teamwork, and belief in redefining what’s possible.

It’s an episode about discipline, self-awareness, and the courage to go all in on a goal that scares you. Which means it's not just for runners. I know it will have an impact on so many people who are setting and striving for goals right now.

Change is inevitable in business.

During times of transition, most people chase certainty. The problem is you’re not going to find that here.

What you can lean on are your principles. And you should fight to stick by them.

For me, that’s meant:
- Leading by example, always.
- Celebrating behaviours that reflect our values, at weekly all-agency meetings, on Slack, in the studio.
- Being available to everyone, never closing doors on questions or concerns.

But principles alone aren’t enough.

What really matters is how you embed them:
Refine and refresh what’s important in your culture.
Build it from the inside out, creating ambassadors
Set clear expectations of behaviour.
Encourage good culture visibly, don’t rely on incentives.
Communicate progress and priorities openly and regularly.

No matter how much has changed around us, these principles have kept Serotonin steady through the shift. They’re the glue. The north star. 

The thing that actually carries you when everything else is moving.
