Moved to within a small team of selected training instructors tasked in the professional rehabilitation of recruits who have failed professionally or physically in training. 
A demanding role retraining recruits with very poor performance levels within in a short time frame with the intention of returning the recruits to training. 
A highly rewarding role that has highly tested my ability to coach and mentor some of our hardest recruits to train with rewarding outputs when recruits are successful, return to training and pass for duty.

48 hours after this photo, everything changed. Here's what I learned about leadership.

5 AM, Afghanistan. The morning after six of our guys had been injured. The air was tense as we stepped through that rusty gate for another patrol.

We knew the dangers. IEDs had already hit our unit. The Taliban were placing secondary devices to target those helping casualties. Every irrigation ditch, every cornfield, every dirt track could be the one.

Then it happened.

The explosion threw me to the ground. Through the dust and confusion, I saw my commander, Vicey, the man who'd led us through impossible situations, who'd just won the Military Cross for bravery the day before, lying unconscious and badly wounded.

All of us had been hit. I was lying there, unable to move, watching it all around me.

That's when I witnessed something that changed how I understand leadership forever.

The drill when this happens, stay still and ensure there are no other devices nearby. 

But Richy didn't hesitate. Instead, he sprinted toward us, knowing there could be secondary devices waiting beneath his feet. Without a word, he began working to save our commander's life. I crawled over to help. Together, we did everything we could while the sound of gunfire echoed overhead.

Richy's actions weren't from duty. They were from choice. From the loyalty and faith he had in our leader.

Here's the truth about leadership:
It's not tested when things go according to plan. It's revealed when everything falls apart. Vicey had built such trust that when the worst happened, his people ran toward danger, not away from it.

These actions saved his life.

As you head into this week, ask yourself: Are you leading in a way that inspires that level of commitment? When the unexpected strikes your team, a crisis, a setback, a challenge, will your people step up by choice or obligation?

The unexpected always comes. The question is: have you built the kind of leadership that creates followers who'll give everything to preserve what matters?

Behind these messages, I was planning my exit.

You just never know what’s going on behind the screen. 

These screenshots show conversations between me and one of my best friends. We’d just learned that a mate from school, the brother of a good friend, had taken his life.

The news rippled through our entire group. Everyone was gutted. Shocked. Another family ripped apart by the silent killer. 

But here’s what no one knew:
Two weeks before these messages, on January 14th, I was standing on a cliff edge, ready to jump. 

And when these messages came through on January 30th? I was still in that dark place. Deeply depressed. Broken. Still planning an exit.

This is what putting on a mask looks like. Especially as a man.

Look at my messages: “That’s shocking news.” “I’m gutted.” “Poor family.” “Such a good lad.”

Being strong. Being there for my mate. Saying all the right things.

Meanwhile, I was massively falling apart myself. Barely holding on. Exit planned. 

That’s what we do, isn’t it? Show up brave for everyone else while we’re drowning. Be the rock. Don’t burden others with our problems. Man up!

Then something shifted.

Seeing the devastation our friend’s death caused; the pain my mates were experiencing, the hole left behind, I realised I couldn’t do that to the people I loved.

On February 13th, I finally broke down wider than just my wife, mum and the professionals I was being treated by. I rang my mate, and absolutely everything came out. Crying down the phone. No mask. Just honesty.

And guess what happened?

My mate was there for me. Completely. That 52-minute call helped me further my healing. 

And before then, I’d never cried to a friend like I did that day. 

The truth: Two friends in crisis. 

One couldn’t reach out and succumbed to his demons. The other, barely, managed to reach out after seeing the devastation a loss causes, to begin healing.

The difference? That one conversation.

So here’s what I’m asking:
You don’t know how the person on the other end of the phone really is. You don’t know what’s behind the token “I’m fine.” You don’t know what sits behind the WhatsApp messages. 

Think something’s up? Ask. Then ask again. Then ask a third time.

And if it’s you who’s struggling? Please reach out. To anyone. It doesn’t have to be perfect or eloquent. It just has to be honest. Don’t say “I’m fine.”

My message stays the same: Keep talking. Keep opening up. Keep making this normal.

The best leaders don't just talk about themselves. I learned this from Harry Kane.

But this wasn't from anything he said about football.

We were sharing a hot chocolate under the stars (romantic, aye ❤️). I'd just finished peppering him with questions about scoring in front of 80,000 fans, the pressure, the celebrations.

Then he flipped it. "What about you? What's it like in the Marines?"

For the next hour, he grilled me. What were the pressures of battle? How did we prepare? What made the difference between average and elite?

This is a man who: → Never drinks → Arrives at training before everyone else → Lives and breathes his craft.

And yet he was studying leadership and high performance from a Royal Marine.
That's the difference between good and world-class.

Good performers master their own domain. World-class performers hunt for excellence everywhere.

They study military discipline. Business strategy. Athletic resilience. Artistic creativity. They know that the next breakthrough in their field often comes from outside it.

So here's my question for you:
When was the last time you asked someone from a completely different world how they do it?

What is a strong man?

I've talked a lot about this lately, and rather than paint everyone with the same brush, I'll instead share what I'm doing to personally feel like a strong man.

Here are things I do that you will expect:
🏋 I lift weights to keep strong. 
🥋 I train Jiu-Jitsu regularly. 
🚮 I take the bins out and pick up the dog cr#p. 
💷 I work hard to try and bring money into the house. 
🪛 I fix things in my shed. 
🥩 I'm chief BBQ'er. 
💪 I open jars (sometimes). 
🛡️ I'm the one who checks strange noises at night. 
🗣️ I'm the disciplinarian with the kids. 
🎣 I go fishing.

These are the things people see. The traditional markers. And I'm not ashamed of any of them. They're part of who I am.

But there is another side to my strength. The ones that might be more of a surprise.
💙 I open up to my friends and family about when I'm down. 
💙 I cry at sad films, without turning away. (Marley & Me 🦮 😭)  
💙 I like to walk in open fields, watch birds and look at flowers, all alone. 
💙 I have weekly therapy and regularly check in with my feelings. 
💙 I journal about my emotions every morning and night. 
💙 I take mental health days when I'm overwhelmed. 
💙 I paint, draw and play guitar, especially when I am low. 
💙 I share with my wife when I feel anxious and scared. 
💙 I say 'I love you more' with meaning. 
💙 I spend hours looking at the stars, thinking about how small we are.

I pride my strength on thinking, if someone broke into the house, I would be able to deal with it. But I can also lie on the sofa with a bowl of popcorn and cry at the end of Toy Story 4 with my children.

In my view, real strength is vulnerability. Being able to be you. But also able to cry.

We've been taught that these two lists are opposites. That you're either tough or tender, physical or emotional, strong or vulnerable. But that's nonsense. The truth is simpler and harder: strong men are both.

Being able to protect your family doesn't make you strong. Being able to admit when you're struggling doesn't make you strong. Being both, that's what makes you strong.

We need to stop letting society tell us we have to choose. You don't. You're allowed to be the whole person you actually are. You're allowed to train in Jiu-Jitsu, fighting people, and then go to therapy and let it all out. You're allowed to check strange noises at night, then cry at sad films. You're allowed to BBQ and paint. You're allowed to discipline your kids and tell them you love them in the same breath.

If you're reading this and recognising yourself in both lists, good! That's not a weakness. That's humanity. That's a strength. That's a man.

And if you're only living one list because you're scared of what people will think of the other, maybe it's time to be the full version of who you are. 

Be strong enough to be vulnerable. Be tough enough to be tender. Be man enough to be human.

That's what real strength looks like.
