Winter sport is unforgiving.

Conditions can change in minutes, sunshine one second, snow and biting wind the next. 

And in environments like that, even small discomforts can become big distractions.

So what have Nike done?

They’ve introduced an inflatable jacket for Team USA that can be adapted to the environment.

If the temperature drops, it inflates to increase insulation. 
If the body heats up, it deflates to regulate warmth. 

It’s a simple concept, but one rooted in solving a very real performance problem.

Because at Olympic level, you don’t want athletes thinking about layers, bulk, or whether they’ve dressed correctly for the conditions. You want them focused entirely on execution.

That’s the genius of this move.

Because when a product works regardless of the weather, it becomes the default choice.

Which means athletes wear it on the sidelines, between events, and on the podium.

Performance solution first. Creating brand visibility as the by-product.

It’s the perfect example of smart innovation from Nike.

In 1998, Nike didn’t just release an advert. They changed football marketing forever.

While most sports ads were serious, technical and predictable, Nike took the Brazil national football team, the most feared side in the world at the time, and turned a delayed airport flight into pure chaos.

- Step-overs in the departure lounge.
- Ronaldo smashing the ball off security barriers.
- Roberto Carlos and Romário juggling between passengers.

No rigid script. Just a ball and freedom.
They even brought in Hollywood director John Woo to capture it with cinematic flair.

The result?

It didn’t feel like an advert, it felt like culture.

→ Sales reportedly jumped. 
→ “Mas Que Nada” became football’s unofficial anthem. 
→ And Nike positioned themselves as the brand of joy, flair and fearless expression.

Here’s the lesson:

Nike didn’t sell boots, they sold a feeling.

And sometimes in sport, and in business, that’s far more powerful.

What’s the most iconic football advert of all time for you?

With millions watching worldwide… someone still thought they could get away with cheating.

At the Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina, the curling match between Canada and Sweden boiled over after Oskar Eriksson repeatedly accused Canada’s Marc Kennedy of double-touching the stones.

In a sport built on precision and etiquette, that’s about as serious as it gets.

→ Tempers flared.
→ Voices were raised.
→ Cameras caught everything.

It doesn’t matter whether it’s grassroots football on a Sunday morning or an Olympic final with the world watching… if something isn’t right, someone has to have the courage to say it.

So fair play to the Swedish team for doing exactly that.

What I find astonishing is that anyone would even consider trying to bend the rules at an Olympic Games in 2026, with cameras covering every angle and millions of eyes on the ice. 

The risk isn’t just losing a match… it’s losing your reputation.

13 months ago, he lost both of his parents in a tragic accident.

A few weeks ago, he stepped onto Olympic ice.

Maxim Naumov wasn’t chasing perfection that night, and he certainly wasn’t skating for headlines… he was skating for his mum and dad.

In 2023, he lost them both in a tragic plane crash in Washington, D.C., a loss that would have been more than enough reason for most people to step away from elite sport altogether.

Instead, he chose to step forward 👏🏽👏🏽

In the Olympic men’s singles final, under the lights, cameras, and the kind of scrutiny that compresses time and magnifies every mistake… he delivered a routine that wasn’t flawless, falling twice along the way and taking himself out of medal contention.

→ No gold.
→ No perfect score.
→ No fairy-tale ending on paper.

But here’s what stayed with me…

Sometimes sport isn’t about the perfect run, and it isn’t about standing on top of a podium with a medal around your neck. Sometimes it’s about who you’re doing it for.

When Maxim finished, he didn’t look angry or defeated. He smiled, and as he left the ice, he kissed a photo of his parents.

That moment said more than any scorecard ever could.

Because at its purest level, sport isn’t always about winning; it’s about honouring the people who shaped you, the ones who drove you to early sessions, who believed in you before anyone else did, who made sacrifices you only fully understand later in life.

On that ice, carrying all of that with him, he made them proud.

And in my opinion, that’s a far greater achievement than any medal could ever be ❤️

On Saturday, he helped knock Crystal Palace out of the FA Cup.

By Monday morning, he was back in a school sports hall.

Sam Heathcote plays for Macclesfield F.C. and works full-time as a PE teacher. And just days after beating Crystal Palace, he wasn’t chasing interviews… he was taking registers.

Personally, I love that.

Committed to his team on the pitch.
↳ Committed to his community off it.

In a world where success often pulls people away from where they started, it’s refreshing to see someone double down on it instead.

Grassroots sport is built on people who stay connected. Who give back. Who understand that the badge on the shirt and the kids in the classroom both matter.

What a class act 👏🏽👏🏽

Some of the best football marketing ever made… didn’t take place in a stadium.

Nike’s Joga Bonito campaign, fronted by Eric Cantona and featuring the likes of Thierry Henry, wasn’t built around Champions League lights or packed-out arenas.

→ It was cages.
→ Concrete pitches.
→ Five-a-side courts.

Environments every kid recognised instantly, and that’s why it worked.

They didn’t position world-class athletes as untouchable superstars performing on a stage most of us will never see. They dropped them into settings that felt familiar. Suddenly, Henry wasn’t just a global icon, he looked like the best player in your local five-a-side.

That’s genius marketing.

Because when you put elite talent into a relatable environment, you close the psychological gap between “them” and “us”.

For a generation coming of age in the 2000s, JOGA TV didn’t just sell boots. It sold belief. And that’s why, 20 years on, people still talk about it.
