After being an Operations Analyst for almost a year, I transitioned to be a Product Trainer. In this role, I hired and onboarded vendors to join our sales teams. LinkedIn: This perspective shift is everything. 

We often convince ourselves that if we haven't mastered a skill by 30, we missed the boat. 

This brings me back to a simple career rule I live by: At every job, you should be either Learning or Earning.

Both is the ultimate goal, but having just one is fine as long as you use it strategically.

Here is how to make sure you become that 60-year-old with 30 years of experience:
💡If you are Learning: You are getting paid in knowledge. Even if the salary isn't perfect, the skills you acquire now are the compounding interest that will pay off for the next three decades.
💡If you are Earning: Maybe the job is stagnant but the pay is great. That is okay. Use that excess compensation to buy your growth. Pay for the course, hire the coach, or fund the side project that teaches you the new skill.

The only way you lose is if you are doing neither.

Don't let the fear of starting late stop you from starting at all. 

The time will pass anyway. 

You might as well fill it with growth.

LinkedIn: Let this be the reminder to never let anyone dim your light.

Be it an employer, a relative, or a friend who just doesn't the dream.

Even if you fail so often it seems they're right, trust your instincts and keep going. 

People turn setbacks into comebacks every day.

I remember years ago when I started out on my #JobSearch, I wanted a job at top companies like Google and Snapchat.

I was a random graduate from a non-Ivy league school who didn't even come close to the top of my class.

I did everything woefully, from resumes to interviews.

And I was hit with rejections upon rejections.

I would sometimes ask myself, "at this rate, can I even stand out so well that top recruiters can’t overlook me amidst Ivy League graduates?"

It's okay to fail over and over especially when you're just starting out.

Just Remember:
- Growth pattern is zigzag: Becoming good at anything takes plenty of practice. It may take you longer than others. And progress will not always be apparent. So long as you keep showing up, you'll continue to grow.
- You started with a "why": You started because you wanted to achieve something. What happens to your dream if you quit now?
- You really are capable: Achieving success in anything has more to do with personality than IQ. The world may be smarter or better than you. However, regardless of what they say, the winner is the fellow who just doesn't quit.

Nothing is impossible. 

It gets even easier if you support yourself with a positive environment and a mentor. 

Never let anyone dim your light.

Companies asking for 5 years of ChatGPT experience or a decade of expertise in a design tool that launched four years ago.

We see it constantly.

It feels like they are looking for a time traveler rather than a qualified candidate.

But seriously, how can we meet expectations that defy the laws of physics?

So instead of getting discouraged by these impossible posts, try searching for roles that explicitly mention the experience you actually have.

Here is a simple hack to find them:
💡 Go to the main search bar
💡 Type your Role “AND” your years of experience in quotes.
💡 Example: Marketing AND "5 years"

This forces the system to find job descriptions that actually mentioned that specific timeline.

Don't let a typo in a job description stop you from applying if you know you can do the job.

LinkedIn: Unless you started your internship during recess in kindergarten, the math just does not add up 😂 

But it feels painfully accurate right now. 

We have all seen those postings. 

They ask for an entry level candidate but demand 5 years of experience. 

Or they want you to have decades of knowledge in a software that was only invented three years ago. 

If you spot those ads during your search, please do not let them live rent free in your head. 

Do not dignify them with a response. 

Instead, here is how you find the companies that actually understand what "entry level" means: 
– Refine your search terms: Go to your job board and manually type "Entry-level" OR "0-1 years experience" plus your target role.
– Ignore the built in filters: Avoid using the standard "Experience Level" filter buttons. They are often mislabeled by recruiters and will show you senior roles by accident. Trust your manual keywords instead. 
– Focus on the match: Research companies that truly hire juniors and tailor your resume to the specific skills they list.

This is my Sales team at Wonsulting, and they’ve been absolutely crushing it over the past few months helping people get into our job search program.

When a few team members started missing meetings, I knew something was wrong.

I asked what was happening and the answers were eye opening.

One teammate shared that their first floor was flooded.

Another had to move into a hotel after losing electricity.

I had a client in our Wonsulting Job Search Program land a job in 2 months at one of his dream companies yesterday with $190k compensation.

He said "Jon - I just received an offer and I need help negotiating".

I happily hopped on a call with him for 15 minutes, and during the call, and he had other concerns/questions that I'll share here that he asked (and how I answered him):

💡 Question: If I negotiate, could they take back the offer?

Answer: Not necessarily - you made it to the final round and landed an offer for a reason. No ethical company would make that decision after spending countless of weeks interviewing you. 

💡Question: I have 4 other interviews I'm going through, should I still accept this offer and take the other interviews?

Answer: I would email the other companies and say you have an offer on the table to see if they can expedite your process. If you're happy with the offer, you should accept it, then take the other interviews regardless to see what other opportunities are there (A contrarian opinion, yes, but think about this - if companies can let employees go without notice, why can't candidates have control of what they want as well?)

💡Question: The person hiring said I have 24 hours to accept the offer after receiving it. What should I do?

Answer: Once you receive the offer, look through the offer letter to see if there are any concerns or questions you may have - then, schedule a call if you need anything clarified before accepting / negotiating. Send them 3 times you're free rather than playing phone tag.

These were some of the questions he asked - but it was great to see he had interviews late into December, which were then scheduled January.

Responsible for coordinating with various PSYOP elements within the PACOM AOR to include USFK, USARPAC, 25ID, 1SFG, and two PSYOP Groups to ensure seamless MISO integration across all lines of effort. As required, coordinates and integrates with other active and reserve U.S. Army, Joint, Interagency, and Multi-national partners to maximize opportunity to achieve desired effects and provide responsive MISO. Assists with the planning for various compartmented and special activities programs.

• Streamlined project management methodologies for training exercises in the division, which reduced necessary meetings by 50%.
• Managed and responsible for an annual budget of $160,000. 
• Acquired emerging technology including hardware and software, delivering results within the $160,000 budget.

Chief of Psychological Operations, I Corps

Battalion Operations Officer of the only active duty airborne Special Operations PSYOP Battalion in direct support to USAFRICOM. Comprised of three PSYOP companies and a civilian cultural intelligence section, totaling over 254 military and 5 civilian personnel. Manages the training and operations for all 3 companies. Responsible for the health, morale, welfare, training, safety and successful deployment of PSYOP Soldiers in support of USAFRICOM and USCENTCOM missions. Integrates with other active and reserve U.S. Army, joint, interagency and multi-national partners. Responsible for planning and providing tactical, operational, and strategic MISO support to the Combatant Commanders, their components, Joint Task Forces, and US Ambassadors during peacetime, contingency operations, crisis, and war.

• Independently managed 15 people in a fast-paced operations division that coordinated the training and operations of a 250-person organization. 
• Developed and implemented a capstone training event that validated deploying teams through a rigorous and objective assessment process. 
• Trained 22 teams to deploy to various locations across Africa to conduct military operations. One team was featured on the front page of the Wall Street Journal for its accomplishments while in Africa.

Operations Officer, 7th Psychological Operations Battalion (Airborne)

Director of Operations for a forward deployed, Combined, Joint, Military Information Support Task Force in Qatar comprised of 66 Soldiers, 15 Airmen, 6 Australians, 2 Marines, and 1 Sailor in support of Operation Inherent Resolve; responsible for synchronizing and coordinating Military Information Support Operations (MISO) for all MISO forces in the CENTCOM AOR. Supervises the implementation of MISO series and programs in direct support of CENTCOM objectives; responsible for the execution, planning, and production of MISO relevant product prototypes; responsible for the health, welfare, morale, and training of all Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines in the Task Force.

• Directed operations for over 80 personnel in a regional operation center responsible for coordinating military operations across 27 countries. 
• Led and organized the relocation of the organization to be physically closer to a military airfield. Reduced product delivery times by 50% by relocating the organization next to the airfield.

Director of Operations (J3), Joint Information Support Task Force (Special Operations)

Commander of an airborne multimedia military information support operations (MISO) company specializing in producing, distributing, disseminating audio, audio-visual, and print products in support of MISO forces, Special Operations Forces, geographic combatant commanders, and U.S. country teams. The company consists of three media production detachments, a medium print detachment, and one headquarters detachment. Responsible for the morale, welfare, training, mentoring, development, discipline, and physical fitness of four officers, 40 non-commissioned officers, and 77 Soldiers; maintains accountability and sustainment of over 13 million dollars worth of equipment and rolling stock.

• Initiated and led the effort to upgrade all deployable production kits to ensure all audio/video and broadcast teams in the organization had the latest tools to create, produce, and disseminate industry-standard products.

Commander, Company B, 3rd Military Information Support Battalion (Airborne)

Commander of a regionally-aligned, airborne psychological operations detachment with the responsibility of providing strategic, operational, and tactical support to US Pacific Command (USPACOM).  Ensures the readiness of the detachment to deploy and execute strategic, operational, and tactical psychological operations for Commander, USPACOM; Commander, Special Opereations Command - Pacific (SOCPAC); other Joint Commands; US Embassy Country Teams; and other US Government Agencies in support of named operations, contingency operations, and peacetime engagement through the Theater Security Cooperation Plan.  Responsible for the technical competence, tactical proficiency, motivation, discipline, and physical fitness of a seven soldier detachment and the welfare of their families.

Detachment Commander, 5th Psychological Operations Battalion

J35 Future Operations Chief, Military Information Support Task Force - Afghanistan

• Executive Producer of a movie in Indonesia with a budget of $500,000. Nominated and winner at multiple film festivals across the world. 
• Conceived, organized, and executed the largest payout of DoD Reward in the Pacific, totaling $450,000. Non-lethal aid from payout led to the trial and conviction of the most wanted terrorist in Southeast Asia.

Military Information Support Team Leader, US Embassy Jakarta

Assistant Operations Officer of the only dissemination psychological operations battalion in the US Army.  Responsible for coordinating and managing training, schools, ammunition and land resourcing, operations for a 700 person battalion.  Also responsible for managing the Media Operations Center Operations to include taskings, training, PSYOP support missions, non-PSYOP support missions, video teleconference coordination, facility security, and new equipment operational testing and new equipment training.  Ensures companies meet routine taskings, operational, and policy requirements.  Supervised daily synchonization of battalion operations and managed the battalion training meeting statistics and database.  Served as the primary Battle Captain and lead planner during the United States Forces Korea (USFK) Ulchi Freedom Guardian 2009 Exercise.

Assistant Operations Officer (S3), 3rd Psychological Operations Battalion (Airborne) (Dissemination)

• Successfully transitioned the Department of Defense from using an operational and financial tracking tool based on SharePoint to a modern web-based tracking system that automated the generation of congressionally mandated reporting. 
       - Produced savings of $1.5 million annually by eliminating a contract that provided six FTEs who manually compiled quarterly congressional reports. 
       - Reduced time to generate congressionally mandated reports from one month to ten minutes using machine learning and automation.
• Provided strategic direction, leadership, and project governance on a multimillion-dollar application for tracking operations, which supported end-users across 36 countries. 
• Co-developed and implemented a proposal that centralized a $270 million operational budget into one account that improved oversight and ultimately influenced Congress to increase the centralized budget by $30 million. 
• Coordinated the implementation of six programs that granted additional resources to subordinate organizations to conduct operations.
