Ninjas in Pyjamas: An iconic esports team with over 20 years of legacy and championship wins, fielding teams around the globe, across various major game titles

At Ninjas in Pyjamas, I am in charge of all daily operations, with an extended focus on commercialization and esports.

1st of November 2018, I returned to esports with North Esports, 12 years after retiring as a player. Back in esports where I belonged.


And I gotta say, it's been 7 wild years. Huge victories, heartbreaking losses, people coming, people going, COVID, online eras, economic turbulence and so much more.


I definitely lost hair and grew older, but with that I grew smarter, and as years go by my conviction for esports keep growing. There are constant changes in the industry, but the underlying, real core metrics underneath just doesn't lie. This is real.

Every year, more people are excited about actually enjoying esports as competitive entertainment. Every year new records are broken across the board, and we grow smarter and tighter as an industry.


A huge shoutout and rallying call to the army of positive do'ers out there in the ecosystem, that time and time again buckle up to figure out how to make tomorrow just a little bit better and more sustainable than yesterday.  At times it can seem hopeless, and there are massive challenges to solve with very little direct and immediate reward - but we do it anyway, because we believe .

Esports has been a gift to my life and career, and I am proud to call hundreds of people I have met over the years my friends now, and we get to push esports forward every day, driven by a fundamental conviction that this truly is something that will last for decades.

Esports doesn't need more people highlighting flaws: it needs people willing to put in the long, hard grind of work that improves it.


The potential of esports is massive, and there is no way that this won't grow into one of the biggest sports and entertainment categories out there. Core metrics are growing across the entire industry, and despite turbulence and volatile business environments, the underlying foundation of gaming is stronger than ever. It's not just a trend - it's an integral part of the sports and entertainment future. 

It's new, but also it's been going for decades. The origins of the esports ecosystem, are a highly community-driven and sub-culture style of environment, with a massive, nerdy passion for everything video games and computers. It started over 25 years ago, driven by people who never cared about what was popular in the mainstream eye. All that mattered was the love of games in all shapes and forms. And then, at rocket speed over the last 6-7 years, it's been propelled into worldwide mainstream attention. Other sports have taken 100+ years to get here. A dramatic shift, which obviously brings great operational complexities and a vast array of growing pains. Esports completely skipped puberty, evolving into a bigger than most people imagined and doing so right in the public eye.


These growth challenges are hard to balance when you need to push on all cylinders and leverage the momentum of esports, while still having to stand the test of time, not having the cost outpace the revenue by too high of a margin, ultimately leading to implosion. The real game is to create a sustainable ecosystem, with an abundance of thriving stakeholders that collaborate on continuously producing fantastic storylines and entertaining content, filled with emotions, paving the way for esports to be around for centuries.

I love grinding, building and watching this space grow into maturity, and Jakob Lund Kristensen and I have for sure doubled down on acquiring Astralis with Fusion Esports Group with a deep passion to help spearhead the way towards profitability and a robust and sustainable ecosystem.


So yeah, esports don't need more consultants and self proclaimed experts telling us the obvious flaws and immaturity of our growing industry - we get it. Instead, stop being on the sidelines, jump in the foxhole with us, and let's get some serious work done. We've got plenty of shovels!

Today is day 1 of one of the biggest sports tournaments in the world - the Counter Strike Major. And maybe, you never even heard about it.


As an esports fan, there is nothing quite like it. The first Counter Strike Major is widely recognized as the CPL Winter in Dallas, 24 years ago in 2001. Since then, we have grown immensely from a band of brothers in hotel auditoriums duking it out on lawn chairs, to filling arenas with tens of thousands of people, over and over again. Astralis are the most successful team in the game, with a record breaking 4 trophies, last winning it in 2019 at the Berlin Major. While I could use this as note for that, I'll tell you a much more important story that compares the viewership then, versus the last BLAST Austin Major in Texas in 2024.

Say what you want, but those numbers don't lie. More people are watching, more people care, more people play, more people spend money on it, and we have only just begun. 

The scale is massive on these events, and for reference the upcoming FIFA World Cup estimates a total of 340 hours of broadcast, playing 104 matches. The CS major in Budapest is set to surpass that of Austin last year with over 135 estimated broadcast hours, and will feature 106 matches. We can argue for eternities about which numbers are correct in the world of media monitoring, and I am definitely not here to advocate esports is bigger than football. Especially not stacked up against my personal favorite event in the entire world, the FIFA World Cup. But what we can conclude is that this is massive, it's growing and it is very, very real. And bear in mind, this event happens twice a year. And that's just Counter-Strike. There's 10 games out there pulling similar numbers.

And yes, Astralis are playing after a 3 year absence which is massive in itself, but so are so many other of the most iconic teams for the past 20 years such as Natus Vincere, Virtus.pro, MOUZ, Team Vitality, G2 Esports, Fnatic, Team Liquid and of course my old home of 87-0 fame, Ninjas in Pyjamas. One thing is for certain, we are destined to keep building iconic stories and legacies that ultimately is the bedrock this entire industry stands upon. No matter who wins and how it plays out.


Now, let's celebrate how far we have come, get some vibes going and watch some Counter-Strike. See you in 106 hours. Vamos!!

T1 Entertainment & Sports just made esports history by winning LoL Worlds for the third time in a row.


The only other team to ever do that in a major esports game? Yep, you guessed it; Astralis in Counter-Strike.


T1 is a remarkable team, which has won the tournament a whopping 6 times total since it's inception, and is the undisputed best League of Legends team ever, home to Faker, who I'd argue is for sure the biggest esports player we have ever had. I haven't seen the viewership numbers yet, but I assume we broke records, which there has been 4 of this year alone in terms of audience and engagement. It keeps happening, and it will continue to do so.


For me, this is a reminder what I truly believe esports is all about: 

The stories. The legacies.

Without these moments, and celebration of constant new records, it doesn't come alive. Similar to all other sports, it's about the celebration of human achievement doing something more than just the ordinary. Constantly pushing boundaries of bettering yourself, chasing the next record, more trophies. The relentless pursuit of something greater. 

Our job as an industry surrounding all of this, is to tell these stories in the most compelling of ways, breaking through the ether, building the infrastructure around it for these moments to keep happening, captivating existing and new fans globally. We live to serve. These moments, are the bedrock of which esports is build upon. Let's celebrate.
