3D Print Canal House

The 3D Print Canal House is a three-year publically accessible ‘Research & Design by Doing’ project in which an international team of partners from various sectors works together on 3D printing a full-size canal house in Amsterdam. A beta-preneurial building project, which has the goal to revolutionize the building industry and offer new tailor made housing solutions worldwide.

DUS designs unique tailor made solutions with a global attitude, with a focus on community, design and technological innovation. The office has won the prestigious Amsterdam Awards for the Arts 2011 and was nominated ‘best Dutch architecture practice’ in 2012. To DUS, architecture is a craftsmanship, and all their work has a personal touch. As is shown by their most recent project, the 3D Print Canal House, which was recently viewed by U.S. President Barack Obama and is currently under construction in Amsterdam. The project is a research into how new digital fabrication techniques can lead to new smart housing solutions and affordable tailor-made architecture worldwide.

Hedwig Heinsman is an artist, architect, and entrepreneur. She co-founded Aectual, the global design-to-manufacture platform for 3D printed circular architecture made from waste materials, that is dubbed ‘The Utimate Upcycling Approach’ by Forbes magazine. Aectual is backed by Tony Fadell’s (IPone / Nest) BUILD fund, AKEF, and DOEN, and works globally with renowned brands and designers like Hermès, Tiffany and Co., Nike, MVRDV, and Patricia Urquiola. In spring 2024, Aectual was awarded with the LVMH Innovation Award for Sustainability & Greentech.

In her work, Heinsman skillfully blurs professional boundaries, presenting utopic visions in tangible experiences, with the aim to confuse and excite the audience, opening room for conversations.

Previously she co-founded DUS architects, known for pioneering projects such as the 3D Print Canal House, which was shown to then-president Barack Obama. Work of DUS has been awarded widely, winning amongst others the prestigious Amsterdam Award for the Arts, and presented at museums internationally, including the V&A and the Rijksmuseum.

Heinsman holds a cum-laude masters degree in Architecture from Delft Technical University, The Netherlands, and studied at Aalto University of Technology, Helsinki, Finland.

As a recognized creative in the field of architecture and innovation she appeared in numerous media outlets, such as BBC News, Al Jazeera, Op1, DWDD, Frankfurter Allgemeine, and Dutch Vogue. In the face of global housing crises, her solo project Tiny Penthouses introduces an artful solution with actual impact, inviting you to explore a redefined landscape of possibilities.
