In large bodies of water, there's a depth at which the temperature drops sharply. 

The thermocline. It's an invisible barrier that keeps the warm surface water from mixing with the cold depths below.

A while ago, I came across a piece by John Bull that made sense to me. He described the point at which trust collapses and clients rapidly and unexpectedly leave their service provider. 

He called it the 𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘰𝘤𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦 because the business doesn't see it coming.

In supplier/client relationships, small issues accumulate. 

--> Prices steadily increase with no added value
--> Service quality reduces over time
--> Fewer features cost the same, or more

Clients tolerate individual issues without a change in behaviour (partly due to the hassle of finding an alternative). 

On the surface they appear loyal. Yet trust has eroded underneath. 

Once the thermocline is reached, clients leave rapidly. Leaders often look for the 'final trigger' and aim to reverse it. But trust builds over time, and they find the reversal doesn't restore the client relationship.

What can you do? Just as divers prepare for a change in water temperature and density they can't see coming, business leaders need to know what lurks in the depths of their stakeholders' minds. 

If there's nothing niggling, that's a great outcome. If there is, knowing about it can spare you the pressure (and cost).

During my successful tenure at All Trades Queensland, I transitioned from an initial role as IT Officer (desktop and network infrastructure support) to Infrastructure Manager and on to the position of ICT Manager, leading the ICT portfolio and organisational innovation.

Key Responsibilities / Outcomes:
• Business Intelligence: I developed and maintained financial and business analytics tools for the organisation from 2008 to 2012. I was responsible for the EOFY process and was the architect of the payroll exceptions reporting and business continuity rule engine.

• HR Information System: I was the program manager for Aurion HR Payroll (3000 employees), this responsibility included being both the database and information services owner in addition to the HR system administrator function. Key responsibilities included system customisation as well as business process development. 

• Internal Consultancy: Key objectives of my role were to create efficiency across all business units and to create opportunities to leverage technology to create organisational efficiency. Key Project: Developed a customised document management system that leveraged OCR  to reduce payroll timesheet processing for 3000 employees from three days with a team of 8 FTE's to one day, with a reduction of 4 FTE's.

• Information Technology: I managed and maintained the ICT portfolio from information systems to networking, security and infrastructure.

• ICT Budgeting: Fiscal year budgeting, long term projections and operation cost management. ROI and business case authoring.

• Cloud / Business Mobility and Digitisation:Key Project (2010) I led the adoption of both Cloud and Digital mobility hardware. As one of Microsoft’s earliest hosted exchange customers (BPOS, which would eventually become Office 365) and becoming an early commercial adopter of tablets, enabling the business to digitally transform and carve out significant competitive and commercial advantages.
