It was over a decade ago I made my career path change from a Vice President of the largest ad agency in the world for non-profit entities to a part-time security guard. It wasn’t all my idea.

After spending 20+ years in broadcast radio, mostly on the air, I was hired as the Vice President of the Radio Division for Russ Reid Company. At the time the largest direct-response ad agency for non-profits in the world. I had made it, or so I thought.

Then the American housing industry crash rippled through the entire economy. This substantially affected the non-profit industry budgets. With radio being one of the newest divisions, we went from a staff of 12 full-time & 25 contractors to zero. I was without a job.

After moving from LA to Dallas, I heard a radio ad for a part-time security position for sports events. I applied & was hired. I spent the next year getting credentials & was promoted twice with CSC.

Toward the end of that year, I applied for a security position at an under-construction Facebook Data Center. I’ll never forget the first question the Security Operations Manager, a former Romanian Army officer, asked me. Forty minutes later I left with a new part-time security job …guarding a lot of dirt on Sunday nights.

My tenure with Facebook saw me learn & rise to the point where I was chosen as the U.S. representative on an international task force to write Standard Operating Procedures for the security of Facebook Data Centers worldwide. This was undertaken while managing security on a 130+ acre Facebook Data Center site in New Mexico, USA.

Since leaving Facebook I oversaw security operations for a client list that included 50+ clients in Houston, managing a team of 250. In this position, I worked with mostly retail clients from big-box discount stores to the highest-end luxury boutiques. 

Additionally, I have written & published two security protocols, one for businesses, & one for personal safety.

Currently, I own a small security company in the northern suburbs of Houston. I'm writing my thesis for a Master's in Security & Emergency Management with an emphasis on Crisis and Emergency Management. I'm also developing a business security training course for LinkedIn Learning,

I never wanted to be a security guard. I took the job because I needed a job & I did my best at my job. Things became more interesting, I learned more, was given more & more opportunities, and I'm now considered a peer by some of the world’s top security people.

Most importantly, I have met the love of my life... an Arabic queen ... who makes me a better man every day.

International Women’s Day matters because it gives us a moment to acknowledge how much women contribute to the world — often invisibly, often unevenly rewarded, and often against resistance.

So yes, celebrate women. But also respect women in practical ways. Listen seriously. Open doors. Share power. Name the labor. Value the intellect. Support the ambition.

That is how admiration becomes progress.

Most B2B teams do not have a content strategy.
They have a publishing routine.

A lot of planning still starts with:

But that question is too internal.
Too calendar-led.

So what's wrong with the Sales team?

Most B2B messaging doesn’t fail on the homepage.
It fails in the first sales conversation.

That’s the reality for a lot of teams right now.

The truth: messaging is not validated when the website goes live.
It is validated when Sales can use it under pressure.

Recently, I kept seeing the same pattern.

Two companies in the same market category.

Similar product complexity

Similar website polish

Similar content volume

But their sales conversations looked completely different.

One team kept control of the narrative.
The other kept translating, simplifying, and re-explaining its own message in live calls.

The difference was not effort.

The difference was whether the messaging had been built to survive real buyer dialogue.

Once messaging is forced into a live sales environment, weak systems become obvious.

Here are some of the clearest signals 👇

Why messaging usually breaks in the first sales conversation:

→ It is too broad to feel relevant
→ It reflects internal language, not buyer language
→ It sounds polished, but not usable
→ It makes claims that are not supported by proof
→ It cannot hold up against objections or competitive pressure

When messaging is built this way, Sales starts rewriting the story in real time.

And that creates drift fast.

What strong revenue messaging actually does:

• Establishes relevance quickly
• Frames the problem in buyer terms
• Supports differentiation without sounding inflated
• Gives Sales language they can actually run
• Gives buyers language they can repeat internally
• Connects claims to evidence credibly

That is the standard.

Because in B2B, messaging is not a brand artifact.
It is a revenue tool.

If it collapses in the first conversation, it does not matter how strong it looks on the homepage.

And once that happens, content gets built on unstable foundations, enablement becomes patchwork, and each team starts solving the same clarity problem in parallel.

The real question is not whether your messaging sounds good.
It is whether it survives live buyer pressure.

Where does messaging usually break first in your experience: the homepage, the sales call, or the follow-up materials?

Funnels still report.
They just do not explain how serious B2B buying actually works.

Most marketing systems are still organized around stage logic:

 • awareness

 • consideration

 • conversion

But buyers do not move through neat stages.

They move through decision environments:

 • defining the problem

 • comparing approaches

 • validating claims

 • building internal alignment

 • managing approval

 • reducing implementation risk

That is why so much B2B marketing still feels busy but commercially weak.

The team is optimizing for movement through an internal machine.
The buyer is trying to reduce uncertainty at a specific moment in the decision.

That is the mismatch.

And it is also why I think agentic marketing matters — not because AI writes faster, but because it creates the possibility of a better operating model:

one that can detect signals, interpret buyer context, and coordinate the next best action with the right level of proof, judgment, and guardrails.

Most B2B Messaging Doesn’t Fail on the Homepage

Are buyers in B2B ignoring your message?
Maybe. Probably not. They just can't hear it above the noise.

How does your message get through? It begins with asking the right questions. (That's your invitation to read this below ⤵️)

Most B2B value messaging fails for a simple reason:
it describes benefits without supporting a decision. 

“We save time.”
“We increase efficiency.”
“We drive growth.”

All of that can be true.
And still be too abstract to convert. 

Because buyers are not evaluating value in a vacuum.

They’re evaluating:

• problem severity
• cost of inaction
• trust in the solution
• confidence in execution
• internal defensibility

That is the gap between messaging that sounds good
and messaging that actually moves deals. 

If your message isn’t creating movement, ask:

Are we describing value — or are we supporting a decision?

Run your current messaging against that test.

Where does your message feel strongest on paper — and weakest in market?
