In 2026, the job search is not a sprint. It’s a mindset shift.

In 2026, networking is not about collecting contacts.
It’s about building alignment.

In my conversation with Jodi Tingling, MSW, RSW, we talked about networking and why most people are doing it wrong.

They message 20 people.
Ask for “any advice.”
Book random coffee chats.

And hope something sticks.

That’s not strategy.
That’s noise.

Strategic networking in 2026 starts with 𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐬.

Before you reach out to anyone, ask:
👉 What role am I targeting?
👉 What industry am I focusing on?
👉 What companies align with my strengths and values?

𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭. 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝.

Then comes the coffee chat not to ask for a job,
but to ask for perspective.

𝑮𝒐𝒐𝒅 𝒄𝒐𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒆 𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒕𝒔:
👉 Are intentional.
👉 Are researched.
👉 Ask thoughtful questions.
👉 Respect time.
👉 And always end with gratitude and follow-up.

But here’s the part most people miss:

Networking doesn’t end after the call.

𝐀𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐬 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲:
👉 Engaging with their content.
👉 Sharing updates.
👉 Sending a thank-you note.
👉 Checking in months later.
👉 Offering value when possible.

That’s how relationships are built.
That’s how referrals happen.
That’s how opportunities find you.

𝑵𝒆𝒕𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒊𝒔 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒔𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍.
It’s relational.
And relationships compound.

You don’t need a better resume.
𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲.


In my recent interview with Jodi Tingling, MSW, RSW, she said something that really stayed with me:

Before applying to any role, get clear on who you are and what you actually want.
👉 Not what your family expects.
👉 Not what the market says is “hot.”
👉 Not what feels safe.

What 𝘠𝘖𝘜 want.

She talked about career journaling and how it doesn’t just give direction… it gives energy.

But clarity doesn’t come from applying.
Clarity comes from 𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.

Before your next application, ask yourself:
👉 What kind of work energizes me?
👉 What impact do I want to have?
👉 What am I no longer available for?
That’s where the real strategy begins.
