When I started my first company while I was still in school, I just wanted to find a better way to earn a living. I was living in small-town Indiana selling vacuum cleaners door to door (yes, that’s seriously still a real occupation) and I was willing to do whatever it took to get out of my current situation. 

I read every book on business and finance I could get my hands on. And I participated in every business conference and networking event I could get to, even if that meant catching the bus when my car wasn’t working. 

It’s been a heck of a ride since those early startup days. After selling that first business, I started a few more—some successful, others not so much. I even joined other startup teams leading marketing, or product, or sales.

3.) Modern makers & physical goods
 → Limited-run print mags, pop-ups, and handmade products that feel like something.

4.) In-person entertainment
 → Open mic nights, live storytelling, small theaters (intimate and analog).

5.) Analog wellness
 → Digital sabbaticals, retreats, and residencies for overstimulated builders.

The future might be powered by AI.

But the next wave of magic is going to be deeply human.

For the longest time, I felt like every move I made in my business was under a microscope.

Every launch. Every post. Every stumble.

But here’s the truth I’ve learned:

Most people aren’t judging. They’re just doing their best to stay afloat too.

We’re all building the plane as we fly it.

Once I stopped trying to be perfect, everything got easier (and a lot more fun).

Don’t confuse “figuring it out” with “failing.”

The right people will see your effort, not your errors. And that’s who you’re building for anyway.

Lately, I’ve been reminding myself not to chase what looks impressive.

Just to focus on what feels right.

What actually matters.

After a recent CEO roundtable I hosted, one founder said something that stuck with me:

“I didn’t realize how much I needed this space to reset and reflect.”

Same.

Sometimes you just need to slow down long enough to hear your own thoughts.

Clarity has a quiet power that cuts through the noise.

If I could give 1 piece of advice to my younger self...

Here's what I'd say: 

"Act without forcing.
Lead without dominating.
Achieve without striving."

That's from the Tao Te Ching, a classic text of spiritual and philosophical literature. And I only began to really understand it in just the past few years.

In my twenties, I was all hustle and no pause. 

I thought effort was the key to every breakthrough.

The paradox of growth is that the more we let go of control, the more clearly we see the path ahead. 

True leadership, creativity, and impact aren't forced... 

They emerge effortlessly when you align your actions with your intuition and purpose.

The greatest breakthroughs happen when we learn to flow, not fight.

Slow down. Trust the journey.

You can’t scale your company faster than you scale yourself.

And trying to do it alone will break you.

I’ve personally benefited from 500+ mental health sessions, 250+ coaching calls, and a consistent peer group I've come to rely on.

Each conversation has made me a better founder, leader, and human.

This isn't a playbook I came up with myself. It's the behavior I've witnessed in all of the founders and leaders I admire the most.

It’s not luck... it’s leverage.

Here are 7 things that have made the biggest difference for me:

5.) Share the messy middle. 
↳ Vulnerability builds connection and connection builds resilience.

6.) Track your inner metrics. 
↳ Energy, clarity, patience, and presence are as critical as ARR.

7.) Scale your self-awareness. 
↳ The better you know yourself, the better you lead others.
