Issue #26: When AI Meets Business Pressure: Why commercial urgency often bends governance

Are we moving too quickly to treat autonomy as a feature, and not a responsibility.


Over the weekend, I spent time with the AI Security Council’s work on autonomous AI in cyber defence, and what stayed with me was the restraint. Not fear. Not excitement. "Restraint".

Autonomy is framed as privilege. Something earned through evidence, reversal, and accountability. Not something switched on because the tool allows it. That distinction matters more than most realise.

What I see repeatedly in AI governance work is this. When systems act, humans still carry the weight. Liability does not disappear. Boards still answer for outcomes. Vendors rarely own model failure unless you have written it, clearly, into the contract.

This report reminds us of something easy to forget. Speed without boundaries creates new kinds of risk. Guardrails are not bureaucracy. They are how trust survives contact with reality.

For leaders deploying autonomous systems, the question is no longer whether AI can act. It is whether your organisation is ready to stand behind those actions.

An unclear question = an unwanted answer. It's the same with AI.


There is a moment from Hell’s Kitchen that says more about AI than any technical guide.
Chef Gordon asked a contestant, “What did you cook the rice in?”

The contestant replied, “In a pot.”

The room laughed.
The chef paused, and clarified, “Stock. In what stock?”

That tiny mix-up captures a truth we often ignore.
When the question is unclear, the answer will be limited in scope. The contestant did nothing wrong. He answered the question as it was asked. The trouble came from missing context.

AI works the same way.
When we give instructions that feel obvious in our own minds, we expect the system to fill the gaps. Yet it cannot. It takes our words as written. It follows the frame we give it. If the frame is thin, the result will be thin.

Most disappointing AI output begins long before the response appears on the screen. It starts when we leave out the details that guide meaning. Audience. Purpose. Constraints. Prior attempts. What success should feel like. What to avoid. The hidden story behind the request.

You get better answers the moment you make the question clearer.

What detail do you usually skip that would change everything if you added it?

This kind of technology could shift social norms, human behaviour, and psychological well-being over time.


What happens when every face you pass becomes a dossier? 

When small talk is replaced by silent judgment based on CVs before a word is exchanged? 

When spontaneity, experimentation, meeting someone new, simply being “unknown”, feels impossible?

Even if regulation eventually limits this tech, the knowledge that “you always can be known” changes how we behave, how we trust, how we relate, and how free we feel to be ourselves in public.

🚨 [WATCH] Most people haven't realized it, but without proper legal oversight, AI glasses might already be supporting privacy harm and CRIMINAL activity:

Last year, Alexander Klöpping, a Dutch journalist, went to Amsterdam's financial district using AI glasses. 

After seconds-long interactions with random people on the street, the facial recognition technology powering his glasses could identify the person using publicly available data from the internet.

His goal was to demonstrate how invasive facial recognition technology has become, especially since anyone can wear a device that enables real-time identification.

Many people forget, but besides the more 'hyped' use cases, real-time identification can also be used to support criminal activity.

For example, someone may use these types of AI glasses to identify the victim after a few seconds of small talk, then pretend to be an old acquaintance to steal or commit a violent crime.

Most smart glasses have a small green light at the upper corner to signal that the camera is on, but my guess is that the majority of people will not notice it (that's what we see in the video, too).

Also, more recently, I have seen smart glasses WITHOUT the green light (which would likely be illegal in some countries and U.S. states).

The video is from November 2024, but has been circulating again one year later. 

I would say that from legal and regulatory perspectives, one year later, the problem remains the same, and little to nothing has been done to protect people from AI-led privacy invasion on the streets (which might also facilitate other types of harm and violent crime).

I would also say that, in general, we are WORSE in December 2025 than we were in November 2024. Why?

There is a global deregulatory trend in AI (pushed by the U.S.), and, through the Digital Omnibus, the EU is proposing changes to the GDPR and the EU AI Act that are detrimental to the protection of fundamental rights, including, of course, privacy.

Despite all the odds... I'm cautiously optimistic that the pendulum will swing in the opposite direction in 2026, as deregulated AI clearly benefits no one (except tech billionaires).
