The recent decision to restore billions in federal #MentalHealth and substance use grants was the right thing to do, and it was a life-saving measure.

Suicide is the second leading cause of death for young people ages 10-34. Yet more than $1.9 billion in Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) grants were initially terminated across 2,800+ programs — including suicide prevention, youth mental health, and community recovery services. Within hours, organizations were preparing for layoffs and closures. 

While the reversal was welcome news, the brief cancellation of essential funding exposed just how fragile our nation’s mental health infrastructure truly is, and how quickly lives can be put at risk. Communities across the country depend on these investments to keep counseling centers open, retain clinicians, and provide vital prevention and recovery services. Restoring this funding prevented immediate disruption for thousands of providers and millions of people, including youth, who rely on them.

At The Jed Foundation (JED), we know that prevention, early intervention, and strong community-based systems work. Now we must ensure stronger guardrails to protect the urgent mental health needs of all Americans.

National nonprofit focused on supporting Military and Veteran Caregivers
• Tapped by Leadership to take on additional oversight of the Foundation’s Direct Support Programs: Respite Relief and Financial Wellness. Supervise 2 staff members, including a Data Manager. Oversee adoption of agency wide KPIs and the creation of data management dashboards in Salesforce.
• Helped secure Foundation’s largest gift on record: $5M from the Diana Davis Spencer Foundation
• Successfully established the Campaign for Inclusive Care, a joint initiative with Veteran’s Affairs (VA) to implement a system-wide approach to caregiver inclusion. 
• Wrote proposal for (and received) the initial $750K grant from USAA.
 -Designed program to include formative research from Duke University and UT Health San Antonio with the ambitious goal of creating systemic change within the VA, the largest integrated healthcare provider in the US. (Published articles in peer-reviewed journals included below.)
 -Led development of a 4-part curriculum (Academy for Inclusive Care) on how medical staff can practice inclusive care. The course is nationally accessible, is hosted on TRAIN and through the VA’s online LMS. To date, more than 1,000 individuals have completed the 4-module training.
• Developed and oversee the implementation of Foundation’s organizational strategic plan. 
• Partner with RAND Corporation, Mathematica, Duke University, and UT Health San Antonio for research.
• Serve as a Key Member of several committees / boards, including the National Academy of Science’s TBI Forum; the NIH study on TBI (CAGE-BH); and a VA-funded Gun Safety Project through Tulane University.

• Reorganized operations, streamlined functions, implemented QuickBooks and helped auditor rework financial policies. Implemented new payroll system at net cost savings, wrote/updated HR & Board manuals.
• Ensured compliance with NYS Charity Regulations, improved non-event fundraising by redesigning website and e-newsletters, increasing brand awareness (improved metrics for all social media).
• Partnered with BOD and 1 program manager to set strategic agenda for growth; increased annual budget (was $250K) by recruiting pro bono strategic consultants to develop a 3-year strategic plan.
