The AI bubble isn't what you think it is.

I went down a bit of rabbit hole over the weekend 

I looked at some of the data and it's a bit embarrassing for our industry.

Tech workers are a tiny, tiny, tiny portion of the US workforce. So tiny in fact that tech workers only make up roughly 3.6%.

But they make up 15% of all LinkedIn users.
They drive 33% of all VC funding.
And 60% of the tech workforce use AI regularly.

So when you see "AI is taking over" on your feed every single day, the reality is that's not the economy talking, that's a tiny echo chamber that we live in.

The real numbers:

72% of workers have never used AI at work.
88% don't use it daily.
91% of small businesses haven't adopted it.

Construction workers aren't worried about ChatGPT, plumbers aren't losing sleep over Claude. The bloke running a logistics company with 30 staff has never opened an AI tool.

The bubble isn't AI. The bubble is us.  

Tech people, who work in tech, who speak about tech, who love tech.

Living in a world where everyone we follow, everyone we talk to, and everything we read is from the same 3.6%, which is roughly 12.6 million people.

The entire tech workforce would fit inside LA.

Anyway thats my take on the whole AI bubble.

Agree? Disagree?

I wouldn't tell anyone if I won the lottery.

But there would be signs.

And it works. 

I see thousands of people commenting on posts with misinformation and clickbait content.

In all that noise, people's expectations of what AI actually does and can do has become completely warped.

They expect some magic overnight success.

So when reality shows up, the hallucinations, the broken workflows, the third iteration that still doesn't work, they feel scammed. 

I've been feeling pretty lost lately.

I just can't compete with the promise of magic. And I can't bring myself to ask you to comment on a post when I could just link you to my GitHub or YouTube. 

My version of this looks like sitting with a client and mapping out a messy process. Building something that fits how their team actually works and fixing the thing that broke at 9pm on a Tuesday.

I don't have a hot take to close with.

I just think there's still space for people doing the quiet stuff properly and I really only want to be surrounded by people with the same values.

Thursday night at Leading Cyber Ladies event "Inside the Command Centre" at Cisco was blast 💫! No matter how hectic the prep might be, we always leave pumped and inspired by the insights and positive energy in room. 
So let me share some highlights of the panel with Bronwyn B. and Alexia Konstantinidi, who are some of the kindest, knowledgable and fun cyber ladies I've met! 

1- ⚠️ 2025 saw an increase in insider threat and in the use of AI to scale attacks, especially opportunistic ones. AI is also enabling more sophisticated social engineering and deepfake attacks.

2- "Move left of boom 💥 ": The key to good incident response and crisis management is preparation. More and more companies see the value in table top exercises to address gaps before a crisis might make things much worse.

3- 📌 Test IR plans, back up and recovery plans; check insurance policy coverage (and store it away from hackers eyes 🔒); understand the potential impact to customers; the regulatory framework to comply with before, during and after an incident. These are essential steps. 

4-  🤝 The human aspect is no less important, although often overlooked: building and ensuring human resilience as well as establishing critical relationships with key stakeholders before a crisis can make a real difference when the you need all hands on deck in high-stress situations.

Cybersecurity is not just technical, it is human | Protecting people, businesses & resilience

I am going say this loudly for the ones who have missed my posts about ambulance chasing before and my view on selling on fear. 
As we are watching what is unfolding in the Middle East, where fso many people are living through fear and uncertainty, people are genuinely being impacted in real time, that is not your next sales pitch for your next LinkedIn post.
It is not the moment to get into “this is why you need our solution” or “book a demo to stay protected.” I do not care what you are selling. I do not care how innovative it is or how proud you are of it. There has to be a line, and I was hoping this would be it.
There is a difference between sharing verified guidance, encouraging vigilance, or pointing people towards official updates, and using a crisis to try and fill your pipeline. One is responsible. The other is opportunistic.
When the orgs in the industry do this, it does not just reflect on them. It tarnishes the whole industry. It reinforces the stereotype that we only show up when there’s fear to leverage. That we see global instability as a marketing opportunity. In cybersecurity especially, where trust is everything, that kind of behaviour erodes credibility. If we blur the line between genuine risk communication and revenue chasing, people stop listening altogether, and when they stop listening, that is dangerous.
LinkedIn might be a professional platform, but it is still full of human beings. Real people reading this while watching the news, checking in on friends, family, loved ones worrying about what comes next.
For once, can we just not turn suffering into strategy?
Not everything needs a call to action. Not every moment needs to convert. Sometimes the right thing to do is to pause, show a bit of empathy, and keep your sales pitch out of it.
Just for once, let’s not.
