Yesterday I wrote about an online brand visibility framework we call 𝐃𝐄𝐎 - 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐎𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.

The core idea is simple.

The Internet is moving from 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 to 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲.

Today I came across something interesting from a leading university.

The 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰 documented the exact shift.

When AI generated summaries appear in search results, 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐰𝐞𝐛𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐩 𝐛𝐲 𝟒𝟕% 𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞.

In some cases, the drop approaches 𝟗𝟎%.

Think about what that means.

For twenty years the model was simple:

Rank high on Google → get clicks → win customers.

But when AI gives people the answer directly, the user often 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐬 𝐚 𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐥.

That changes the way brands must think if they want to keeping getting discovered online.

Visibility is no longer just about being on top of a page of results.

You absolutely still need that ranking.

BUT you ALSO need to get 𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐭𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 so that you can show up on Chat LLM channels like Chat GPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and Grok.

That is exactly the brand visibility problem DEO is designed to solve.

The HBR article points to a few interesting patterns that align with what we are seeing:

- They reproduce 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫, 𝐪𝐮𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬

In other words:
Generic keyword-rich content is diminished in terms of its importance.

𝐍𝐨𝐰, 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.

That is why modern websites are evolving by expanding their purpose.

Not just destinations for traffic.

𝐍𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐮𝐛𝐬.

Places where expertise, authority, and reputation are clearly structured so external systems can interpret them.

Search optimization helped companies appear in the results.

𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐎𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐬 𝐛𝐲 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫.

AI compresses research and comparison into one moment.

Algorithms aggregate human signals. Influence the ecosystem.

For two decades the battle was ranking pages.

Now the battle has evolved.

You still need to rank because of course Google still matters.
