I often get the question: What makes a good entrepreneur? 🤔

While there are a variety of qualities I could list, the one that comes to mind today is simple: Decisiveness. 

Too often I work with fantastic professionals who have a strong work ethic, diverse skillsets, leadership experience, management backgrounds – in essence all of the necessary nuts and bolts required to support long-term business success…but something holds them back. 

❌ Uncertainty. 

And look, there’s a lot to be said for taking your time and evaluating thoroughly before making a decision – no one here is suggesting being hasty or brash – but that’s not what I’m talking about. I’m talking about the aspiring entrepreneur who has all of these hard earned qualities, but lacks the confidence to make decisions.

Decisiveness in business without all information is essential. Whether you’re hiring a new team, delegating tasks, setting priorities for future workload, solving any number of problems that will arise or managing much-needed resources, being decisive and confident in your decisions is vital and you will never have full and complete information prior to making most decisions as a business owner.

So what can you do? Consider this basic framework for making better decisions:

1️⃣ Make your priorities crystal clear. 
If you don’t have a clear hierarchy of your priorities, every obstacle feels like it holds equal importance. 

2️⃣ Hone down the information to the essential. 
More is not always better. When considering data, look for what’s meaningful, not everything that’s available. 

3️⃣ Make decision deadlines. 
Nothing motivates like a deadline. Setting self-imposed deadlines limits how long any looming decision hangs over you. 

4️⃣ Make decisions that align with your values.
Good decisions aren’t rooted in fear. Make sure you are making decisions you can stand behind. Align your short-term behaviors with your long-term goals.

5️⃣ Action is the antidote to fear.
While you want to be careful never to mistake movement for action, never discount the value action has in reducing anxiety – taking that first step is essential to find clarity and reduces fear-based paralysis.

Ultimately, being decisive isn’t about having a crystal ball that can see into the future. It’s about having a firm grasp on your priorities and making the best decision with the information available.
