These folks at Marshall get it.

We at Intermed Labs (IL) had a great time in Huntington this week with our partners at Marshall University and Marshall Health Network. It was great to spend time with Toney Stroud, Scott Raynes, Brad D. Smith, and many others who are helping move innovation forward in WV.

Together, we are working to make WV a Startup State, and Marshall is a key partner in that journey.

In just the first few years of Intermed Labs @ Marshall, we have unlocked several patents and filed several more. More importantly, we have executed our commercialization process to engage healthcare innovators and launch 5 investments (3 companies already spun out) built around new medtech inventions, with 2–4 more anticipated in the next 12–18 months.

These innovations are designed to:
• Improve patient outcomes
• Improve clinical workflows
• Solve challenges unique to rural health

Our on-campus collaborations across Marshall and MHN (including the Marshall University Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (iCenter), Marshall Advanced Manufacturing Center (MAMC), Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine (MUSOM), Marshall University Research Corporation (MURC), and Marshall’s new Innovation District) are creating a real upswell of medtech innovation in the region.

It truly takes a village (or perhaps a “district”), and together we are building something special.

I've realized there's one metric I care about more than any other.

It's how often I work with people who consistently surprise me for the better. And I really try to do the same with the people around me.

I find this has nothing to do with specific skills, titles, or experience.
The people who consistently impress and amaze me come in all shapes and sizes.

They do more than they are asked and/or deliver something better than I had imagined (often times better than the I could have done myself).

When we work with these people, they force us to challenge assumptions and push boundaries we didn’t know were possible.

These surprises keep me engaged. They push growth beyond what I planned. 

And the consistency of the surprises-for-the-better is the real measure of a high-performing team. When I find myself and the clients we work with surprised in the right way, I know I've got something special. And thankfully, it happens for me every week if not every day. I am surrounded by awesome people.

When we attract those who constantly elevate the game, everything else follows. 🙌

PS: I posted an image in the comments in honor of being surprising, being a big fan of the year of the [fire] horse, and being an AI enthusiast…I hope the concept I wrote about helps inspire some people.

Ever wonder why the best technical people often struggle with sales? And why customers keep getting fooled by a slick pitch instead of seeing who actually delivers?

We all know this is broken, and yet we keep playing along.

Tech experts are wired to build, solve, and ship. They care about what's true and what works. But sadly, the market often doesn't care about truths. It cares about convincing. Sales is storytelling, emotional resonance, making someone feel understood before you prove anything. Most technical people have an inherent belief that is beneath them.

Meanwhile, buyers keep handing contracts to the best presenters, not the best builders. A charismatic deck wins the deal, a mediocre team fumbles the delivery, and everyone acts shocked when the project implodes. Then they do it again next quarter.

Now, here's where it might get uncomfortable.

To my tech friends:
If you're technical and you refuse to learn how to sell your value, that's not integrity. That's ego, and it's costing you. Great tech and great sales shouldn't be opposites. But most of the industry has picked a side and gotten lazy about it. The teams that master both are rare. They're also the ones winning in today’s complex, competitive world.

To my buying decision-maker friends:
If you're buying and you keep choosing confidence over competence, you're part of the problem. Stop being dazzled, and start asking harder questions. Who's actually doing the work? What happens when things go sideways? Show me the scars, not just the deck.

What’s your take? Are you a tech leader who needs to sharpen your sales game? Or a buyer who’s tired of being sold but not delivered on?

We can all get better at our crafts and making better decisions each day. 🙌

Drew Lytton  and I were talking about a bunch of things, and I think he coined a new term for UI design: fumblable.

We were talking about software, but it could relate to design for anything.

Great design is easy to use for savvy users. But in reality, most user interfaces, especially complex ones like non-CRUD software, aren't truly easy for the non-savvy user. They sort of click around, get stuck, and generally fumble around.

So, here's the nuance we discussed. Good product design isn't just about making things intuitive. It's about making them fumblable in all the right ways.

Savvy users need to get the flow. And less-savvy users need to get enough flow+guidance to keep them going without as much confusion as they already experience in their life all day long.

Great designers know how to create interfaces that are intuitive for experts, but forgiving enough for everyone else. The best products are nicely fumblable.

It's a subtle art honed by only the best. And that fumblable-ness might just be what elevates a good product to a great one. 🙌
