Every time a new wave of technology hits, there's always fear that we’re about to lose something essential about ourselves such as our ability to think, solve problems, and/or be creative.

Sound familiar? It should. Because every major leap forward has sparked the same fear.

Take the invention of writing. Before that, memory was everything. Cultures relied on oral storytelling and memorization. But when writing arrived, we lost some of our reliance on memory. What did we gain? The ability to record and share knowledge across generations. This sparked revolutions, built civilizations, and expanded human potential. Writing made ideas immortal and laid the foundation for modern education, law, and culture.

Then came the printing press. Handwritten manuscripts were rare, expensive, exclusive. The printing press made books accessible to everyone. Sure, we lost some craftsmanship with the artistry of scribes and the painstaking labor of copying texts. But what we gained was a revolution in knowledge dissemination. It fueled the Enlightenment, scientific progress, and societal change. We traded some artistry for massive societal gains.

The Internet? Suddenly, knowledge was at our fingertips. Research that used to take days or weeks was now instant. Yes, we lost some skills like sifting through libraries and archives, but we gained a global network, rapid collaboration, and a flood of information. It didn’t make us less capable; it made us smarter.

And now, AI. Yes, routine tasks, repetitive work, even complex problem-solving are shifting from humans to machines. But what are we really losing? Data analysis, pattern recognition, idea generation? Not what makes us human.

What we’re gaining is the freedom from monotony, the chance to focus on what only humans can do: imagine, empathize, judge, create.

AI can analyze data, generate ideas, even mimic human behavior. But it can't feel, connect, or make moral decisions rooted in lived experience. It can’t empathize with real pain or understand moral nuance. These are the qualities that make us uniquely human.

AI isn't here to replace us. It’s here to unlock our potential, to give us more space for human-centered pursuits. It’s not about losing our humanity; it’s about amplifying it.

The real question is what can we create when we are freed to focus on the things AI/machines cannot do? Emotional intelligence, creativity, moral reasoning, human connection.

As AI evolves, our challenge is to see the opportunities. To build a future where humanity doesn’t just survive but thrives.

You can choose to use the inevitable AI revolution to end what makes us human. Or you can use it to make us extraordinarily more human. I know what I choose.

The future isn’t about resisting change. It’s about harnessing it. 🙌

What gets missed?

I’ve watched this happen in enterprise tech, medtech, and even with startups. 
Smart, motivated professionals watch as funding and policies target external “experts.” 
But here’s the thing. Real innovation, resilience, and deep customer empathy that is needed to build delightful solutions come from people who are invested for the long haul.

If we keep paying outside experts instead of growing our own, what are we really building? 
A temporary fix, not a legacy.

The best outcomes I’ve seen come when you put resources directly into the hands of local leaders and teams. There are always super capable people around. We just need to find them and engage them. Many of them are heads down doing their thing.
Fund them, trust them, and let them surprise you.

It’s how you build a tech culture that sticks. 
The alternative? 
A revolving door of outsiders who leave as soon as the next gig calls.

Maybe it’s time to stop searching outside for answers and start doubling down on the people already here, with their roots and ambitions in the community.

It amazes me how often well-meaning people still lump traditional AI/ML together with generative AI. I keep seeing the same warnings about “data quality bottlenecks” and “needing perfect datasets before using AI.”

That mindset made sense in the predictive-analytics era. It does not reflect the reality of GenAI today.

Here is the truth:
You do not need pristine, perfectly structured, or massive proprietary datasets to start creating value with GenAI. Public LLMs already give you the ability to analyze unstructured information, automate workflows, reason through problems, and generate insights immediately.

Yet a lot of posts, even from experts, continue to push fear-based narratives about “not being ready” because your data warehouse is messy. They are missing the business nuance.

Traditional AI = quality-dependent models that require engineered, labeled, structured data.
GenAI = flexible reasoning systems that thrive on the imperfect, unstructured, real-world data organizations actually have.

This shift matters.
It means you do not need a multi-year data-modernization initiative before you can use AI. You do not need to wait for perfect dashboards or unified schemas. You can adopt GenAI as-is, right now, and learn what works for your teams and your customers.

Good data still improves outcomes.
But it is no longer the barrier to entry.
