This list of LinkedIn writing rules isn't for YOU.

It's for ME 4 years ago who:

- had no clue what i was doing
- had no clue how to write
- had no clue what to write about

Winging it like a champ.

Well, these are 10 LinkedIn writing rules for any beginners who are JUST starting in 2025:

1. Start with timelines. e.g. "Last week, I".
2. Only write about YOUR experiences.
3. Take specific problems. Give solutions.
4. Use full stops, colons and bulleted lists.
5. Avoid overly "selly" language. Be helpful.
6. Add credibility sentences to gain reader trust.
7. Always end posts with actionable takeaways.
8. Recycle posts. Tweak hooks + formatting.
9. Don't be scared of failing. Test. Try things.
10. Add people, pain and payoff to hooks.

Reminder:

If you're a beginner, you're gonna be bad.

Every beginner is. But it's how you improve that matters.

What rule would you add, for any beginners reading?

First LinkedIn post possibilities:

- Woah: Three job offers in the DMs
- That's dumb: Radio silence for 48 hours
- Actually pretty fun: 50 thoughtful comments
- Freaking crazy, man: 10,000 views overnight
- WOAH: Speaking invitation from dream company
- Don't love it, don't hate it: 12 likes from colleagues
- Least problematic outcome: Mum comments "proud of you."
- Won't happen, but imagine: Goes viral and breaks LinkedIn

Rule for well, anyone: respect your boundaries. 

But if you're running a business (like me) or side hustle or even if you're employed, here's 3 boundary rules I tend to live by:
 
1. Say no to "hopping on quick calls" 
 
I've had 100s of enquiries and messages from "leads" asking to "hop on a quick call to discuss" pricing, details, how my offer works. I remember doing a couple of these when I first started out. But they never bought anything. They were often the busy type who like to talk more than they listen. 
 
The only people you should hop on a quick call with is your family and friends. 
 
2. Don't take work that isn't your speciality 
 
Just this week a friend messaged and asked if I could take on a gig writing copy for their brand's adverts. I love that they messaged me and I'd have loved to take on a gig that isn't my normal LinkedIn writing consulting. But it's not my speciality - I'd have to figure it out. And the outcome would likely not be as good. 
 
If you get asked to take something on that isn't what you normally offer, respectfully decline and pass it on to someone else. 
 
3. Work when YOU want to work 
 
The main reason I love not working in an office or being employed is because I can LITERALLY work whenever I want. I decide. I set the expectations with clients and customers and they respect that because that's how my business works. I like to think that my clients work with me because they like the sound of how I work and how I can help them. 
 
The minute you start working out of the hours you want to work, you've lost control. 
 
Don't get me wrong, it's not easy. 
 
You want to please people and make more cash and have happy clients. 
 
But nothing makes me happier than a calendar I have designed for myself. 
 
Respect your boundaries and design your life.

You don't get 100+ likes for spending hours on 1 LinkedIn post.

I'd never have hit 183,011 followers, if it was true.

Here's a simple 6 step writing system I wish everyone would use to write LInkedIn posts 2x faster:

1. Go to your LinkedIn analytics
2. Find a post that popped off
3. Create a template of it
4. Save it in your magicpost.in template library
5. Next time you write, pick a template
6. Change the topic / experience / info

Best thing about this?

NOT the time saved on writing. But how it forces you to do more of what works. 

You increase the % chance that it “wins” again.

Extra tip: time yourself writing. Sit down. Set a timer for 15 minutes. Finish one post. Reset the timer. Repeat.

My approach to writing online is incredibly boring:

- i write about things i actually did
- even if those things weren't "exciting"
- no made-up scenarios or hypotheticals
- actual real stuff that happened to me
- usually pretty mundane experiences
- but always relevant to what i'm posting about

I've been writing online for years now.

Which means I've seen every "content hack" and "viral formula" come and go.

That means I'm conditioned to think:

- i need crazy stories to get attention
- i have to manufacture drama or excitement
- everything needs to be a "breakthrough moment"

And live in this weird cycle of trying to make my normal life sound more interesting than it actually is, just to get a few more likes.

But I love my simple, "boring" approach to content.

Wouldn't change it.

It's faster to write because I'm not making stuff up.
It's easier to write because I lived it.
It's more fun to write because it's actually me.

I'll let the wannabe thought leaders invent their perfect case studies and post them on LinkedIn for engagement 😂

Proper, "boring" but real stories are where it's at ✌️

2 months ago I worked with Cass Whitaker in my LinkedIn Reputation Bootcamp. I'm convinced she's superwoman.
