Content does not scale your revenue.

I learned this building Reveting.

There was a season I thought to
post more.
go live more.
be everywhere.

And while visibility grew, revenue didn’t move the way I expected.

Because content alone is exposure.

Exposure without structure is performance. I love theater so I'm all about a good performance, but that's not why I was doing what I was doing.

What actually changed our business was 

☑️ one core pillar and offer around livestreaming.
☑️ a more defined client journey
☑️ building lead data, ai, and automation on the CRM for ourselves and clients
☑️ offers positioned clearly enough that the right people self-identify.

The livestream isn’t the strategy.
The ecosystem around it is.

When someone watches a show we produce, they’re entering:

– A retargeting loop
– A follow-up system
– A nurture sequence
– A sales conversation already warmed

That’s why some brands post daily and stay stuck.

And others post weekly and close consistently.

It’s not effort.

It’s engineering.

This weekend I went to Warm Glow Candle Company in Centerville, Indiana for my favorite hand-dipped candles.

That business isn’t successful because the candles are pretty (and let me tell you they are literally the best candles on earth).

It’s successful because there’s supply chain, placement, repeat behavior, experience design.

Most founders are focused on the flame.

Very few build the structure that holds it.

Build the engine.

Then let your presence amplify it.

Is your brain oozing AI outputs?

A lot of what’s happening feels dopamine-driven similar to how social media platforms optimized everything for engagement and addiction and it took people years to fully understand what that did (and still does) to our brains.

I don’t want to sound like a luddite, but people need to be careful with how much thinking you outsource to it. Over time it dulls the critical functions of your brain and the skills you’ve spent years building. 

There’s also a brand cost. Every time I see blatant AI output in my feed or email inbox, it tells me person behind it didn’t care enough to think.

And marketers are in the business of creating ideas that are sticky, memorable, and creative.

The truth is always somewhere in the middle, but I don't buy into lowering my standards in the name of efficiency or just because it’s fashionable.

My brain is my money maker (not my productivity stack).

If you feel overwhelmed right now, check your inputs.

There are a lot of smart, experienced B2B marketers genuinely questioning whether their hard earned instincts just became a commodity.

When everything feels like it's changing at mach speed, it's hard to make good long lasting decisions. The pressure to react is everywhere.

And if your inputs are panic driven creators + course economy incentives, your decisions become…panic driven.

Decisions are downstream of the information you expose yourself to.

And right now it feels like we have 2 options.

Option 1) Borrow from people like Ogilvy / Ries & Trout / Claude Hopkins / Eugene Schwartz who built modern marketing 

Option 2) Learn from someone who needs you to believe marketing got reset to zero so you buy the shortcut

So I’m doing a small series where I’m sharing first principles from old marketing books applied to modern B2B software.

What’s one marketing book you’d bet your career on?

I reject the idea that marketers have to become "builders" to be successful "in the AI era".

A lot of the anxiety marketers feel about AI comes down to what information they’re allowing to enter their brain every single day.

Spend 5 minutes on B2B LinkedIn and you might start to believe that the entire craft is about to disappear overnight.

It's not shocking to me that SaaS companies with a fetish for workflow automation are putting this weird pressure on their marketers to become "builders".

So much of that pressure comes from technologists at software companies who only understand marketing in terms of crappy lead generation tactics for sales.

That, paired with the news cycle and tech layoffs create a perfect storm of anxiety to deviate from the fundamentals of buyer psychology and long-term brand equity.

Reminds me of the NFT "boom" in 2018-2021.

Everyone was too busy "building" tokens & infrastructure to see the wall it was about to hit due to the fact that 99.9999999999% of it was not grounded in fundamentals.

You know like...solving problems?

I still love AI when it’s applied thoughtfully. I absolutely use it. And I love the fact that in some cases, AI gives marketing teams back control and not needing devs.

But make no mistake about it. AI workflow automation is not fundamentally marketing. 

Now go touch some damn grass.

“If we target just people hanging off rocks…won’t we lose all the Wall Street bros?”

Patagonia is an interesting counterexample to this fear companies have about positioning.

For decades, Patagonia has built its brand around a very specific identity.

- Climbers
- Backcountry skiers
- Environmental activists
- People who spend their weekends in nature

They even ran the famous “Don’t Buy This Jacket” ad encouraging people to buy less.

None of this messaging is aimed at finance professionals, VCs, or people commuting into Midtown Manhattan.

In fact…they weren’t trying to get those people at all.

And yet you walk into almost any tech office or Wall Street firm and you’ll see someone wearing a Patagonia vest.

Which highlights something interesting about positioning.

Your target is not your market.

Your target is simply who the message is built for.

The market is everyone who ends up buying anyway.

A lot of companies assume if they speak directly to one group, everyone else will somehow feel excluded.

But that’s not really how people respond to brands.

When something is memorable, it tends to travel further than the original target.
