Every week, I see executives on LinkedIn frustrated about age discrimination.

The #1 Resume Mistake I See 
(Even in Executive Resumes)


Leading with years of experience instead of value.


Even the most qualified executives struggle to stand out
Not because they lack experience,
But because their resume doesn’t reflect who they truly are as leaders.


At your level, everyone has 15+ years of experience.
Everyone’s qualified.
That’s not what gets you hired.


What makes the difference is your ability to storytell, connect, and influence through how you communicate your achievements.


Your resume should project the same executive presence you bring into a boardroom: clarity, confidence, and command.


If your opening line says:

“Seasoned executive with 20+ years of experience in operations and strategy…”

𝐲𝐨𝐮’𝐫𝐞 𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧.


Try this instead:

[Target Title] | [Value Proposition Tagline]
Example: Driving organizational transformation by aligning people, process, and performance to drive [desired result] 


See the difference?
The first sounds like 99% of poorly written résumés.
The second sounds like an executive essence.


When hiring leaders or recruiters open your resume, they should instantly understand your value proposition.

𝐁𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐬, 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲’𝐥𝐥 𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐬.

So before you write another word, ask yourself:
➟ “What outcome do I create for the companies I serve?”
➟ “How do I help them grow, innovate, or perform better?”

Lead with that.
That’s how you stand out & that’s how you communicate executive presence, even on paper.

“Recall a moment you were genuinely drawn into.
Where were you? What was happening? Who were you when you were fully there?”

That’s the question Mia Zifkin asked me.

And I didn’t know how to answer it. 
I’m very good at answering from the surface. 
Quickly. Competently. 

This question didn’t want that.

So instead of forcing an answer, I let it follow me.

I went back through my photos to notice when my smile felt forced and when it didn’t, when I looked happy versus when I actually felt drawn in. 

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞.

There’s something spiritual about noticing what we usually rush past.
Baby frogs hiding in the grass.
Trees just beginning to bud.
The way the sky softens right before the sun disappears.

Those moments slow me down without asking anything of me.
My shoulders drop.
My breath deepens.

If I’m on a beach, shaded by a palm tree 🌴 listening to the steady rhythm of water, my whole body exhales like, 𝘰𝘩…𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵, 𝘛𝘏𝘐𝘚.

Then I noticed another pattern.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐈 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐈 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞.

I genuinely love the planning.
The logistics.
The negotiations.
Yes, even the spreadsheets.

From hosting a reptile zoo party for the five kids on my street whose birthdays all somehow landed within days of each other,
to taking all the cousins to the Dells,
to Santa in a penthouse,
to helicopter rides over Sedona.

What fills me isn’t how impressive any of it looks.

It’s holding the responsibility so everyone else gets a break.

A break to play.
To rest.
To just live inside the moment without managing it.

𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐞.
.
.
.
𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲, 𝐈 𝐬𝐞𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠.

I don’t love being an attendee at events.
As an introvert, the small talk, the scanning, the “where do I fit into this conversation?” feeling is exhausting.

But put me on stage as a speaker or facilitator?
Everything shifts.
Connection feels easy.
Actually fun.

𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐤.

I realized how much joy I feel simply feeling like a woman.
𝘕𝘰𝘵 𝘢 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘮𝘺𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧 𝘐’𝘮 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘧𝘪𝘹.

There’s something wildly freeing about letting my body be lived in instead of judged. 


𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭.
Like dancing while cooking with the people I love. 

That’s when I’m most present.
Not because life is calm, but because it’s alive.

𝐒𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐞’𝐬 𝐃𝐚𝐲,  
𝐈’𝐥𝐥 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐢𝐚 𝐚𝐬𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐞:

When do you feel genuinely drawn into your life?
Who are you when you’re fully there?

Cheers to an abundance of self-love, self-worth, play, moments of joy, and community, especially during the hard times 💗

I knew this conversation would be good.

I didn’t realize it would be the kind of conversation that makes you pause afterward and think, “Yep. People needed to hear that.”

I sat down with Jon Mayo, U.S. Army Veteran, transformational executive, and Founder of The WayMaker Community, and we went deep on something I see constantly with high performers and executives:

You can look wildly successful on paper and still be leaving a massive portion of your potential on the table.

We talked about the real reason high performers plateau.

A few of the moments that hit hard:
1. The “danger zone” is the gap between what you are doing and what you are truly capable of. That’s where relevance erodes and complacency creeps in.

2. Many leaders burn out because they try to be the one making every decision. They become the single point of failure and accidentally cap the capacity of their entire team at their own bandwidth.

3. Jon broke down a shift I loved: leading with intent instead of permission. Delegating authority, keeping responsibility, and making communication the currency.

4. We also got real about sustainability. Especially for women carrying layered responsibilities. If you do not prioritize self-care in some way, you will eventually be pouring from an empty cup.

5. And for job seekers, he said something I agree with completely. Applying online alone can pacify you with noise and motion. Real opportunities come from conversations with humans.

Jon ended with a simple challenge I’m still thinking about:
Five minutes. Silence. Notebook. Every day for 21 days. Start today.
