My honest thoughts on what data tools to use...

What Data Tools You Should Learn

Dear all, there's a lot of tools in the data world.

But you don't need to master them all. Here are the BEST data tools to start with:

1) Excel
Excel is still King in the data analytics world. Old? Yup. Boring? Maybe. But it's still VERY popular. It's worth learning Excel. It's required in 39% of data analyst job listings. It's also not that hard to learn. You can learn most of it in a week. Start with filtering, sorting, VLOOKUPS/XLOOKUPS, pivot tables, pivot charts, scatter plots, bar charts. That's a great start. 

2) SQL
SQL is the Queen in the data analytics world. And honestly probably the Emperor of the data universe. Learn it. You won't regret it. It's required in 31% of data jobs. It's a bit harder than Excel as it is a programming language, but it's not bad. Learn SELECT, FROM, WHERE, AND, IN, NOT, GROUP BY, AVG, MAX, SUM, HAVING and that's enough to build momentum. 

3) Tableau
Tableau is the Prince of data analytics and the most popular data viz tool. It's required in 21% of data analytics roles. Learn how to make charts & dashboards. I think bar charts, scatter plots, line charts, KPI's, and data visualization principles is enough. Power BI is it's twin. If you learn Tableau, you'll have no problem learning Power BI later.

4) Python
Python is the Wizard in the data kingdom. It's powerful, flexible, and can basically do anything: data cleaning, data modeling, data visualization. But it's hard to master - takes a long time - and is only required 14% of the time. Learn at your own risk. 

5) Power BI
Power BI is the Prince's little brother (also a prince, I guess). I personally think Power BI is easier to use than Tableau, but according to the data, it's only required in 13% of data jobs. 7% less than Tableau. And the fact that it's hard to install (especially on a Mac), lead me to recommend focusing on Tableau first. 

6) R
R is the Royal Scholar of the data kingdom. It's great at statistics and some other things, but not everything. It's not required that often - only 8%. And that 8% is probably government jobs and academia where it has a strong hold. Easier than Python, but less powerful. Personally: Python > R

What data skills should you learn

It feels extremely overwhelming to see all the super-qualified people applying to an entry-level data analyst job. Especially when you're just getting started But here's a story that should give you hope 👇

I was talking to my data hiring manager friend who explained how he hired his last entry-level position. He didn't actually hire the person with the most data experience. He didn't hire the smartest candidate. Or who was best at SQL.

He hired the person with medium data skills, but a very strong domain background. 

He said, "I can teach them data stuff, but teaching them about the domain would take years"

👉 So apply to data jobs within your domain:

Teacher? Apply to education data jobs.
Accountant? Apply to financial data jobs.
Physical Therapist? Apply to health data jobs. 

I promise you've got this! Don't give up.

Landing a data job in 2026 will be hard.
Most people will unfortunately fail. 

Why? I think because it used to be easy. 
Just learn the skills and apply to 25 jobs and you're good.

That's not the case any more.
It's sadly much more involved now.

Still possible? Even with no technical background?
Yes. Here's what I would do if I was in your shoes:

Learn the skills. That's still very important. 
But it's not what lands you the job. It's what qualifies you for the job. 

Landing the job is much more about two forgotten concepts.
Networking & Portfolio Projects.

If you're ignoring these, you're likely to fail.
Luckily, it's not too late or difficult to start these.

Start an online portfolio. Even if it's ugly or empty.
Use LI, Carrd, GitHub - doesn't matter. 

Build at least one good project. Bonus points for more.
Grab a data set and answer: who, how much, when, where, etc.

Optimize your LinkedIn and resume. Spend hours.
These are the tools to actually get noticed.

But don't leave getting noticed to chance. Reach out.
Find recruiters and hiring managers and message them. 

And reach out to friends & family about data.
Just ask, "do you know any data analysts?" 

Weird? A little. Awkward? yes. 
Worth it? 100%

AI is SO GOOD at analyzing data that it do ANYTHING to make your analysis "good" - even make up data 🤡🙃🤦‍♂️

Here's how AI almost made me lie to the THOUSANDS of you who listen to my podcast ever week. 

For an upcoming episode, I'm doing some financial analysis to compare data roles in different industries. I wanted to show case a few different industries to prove a point. I thought I could show some historic stock trends with a line chart. Should be fairly simple, right?!? 

I was using Claude to make my charts. Everything was going well until I noticed this Meta stock decline looked way too linear. I thought, "Wow! I can't believe how linear the stock fell. Almost a perfect line." And then realized, nothing in life is EVER that linear. So I looked up the actual stock chart and sure enough, not this linear. 

Then I straight up asked Claude if it was making data up. Sure enough, it was. It was "too difficult" to get the right data - much easier to just make it up. UGH! 

This is a great reminder that AI is amazing. But it definitely isn't full-on REPLACING humans anytime soon for data analysis. Is it helpful? Yes. Does it speed up analysis? Yes. Do I use it? Yes. Should you use it? Yes. 

But left on it's own, it will "analyze" "data" so incorrectly it will make you lie to stakeholders, make incorrect decisions as a business, and make you look like a fool.

Double check AI's work - always.

7 Brutal Myths About Data That Are Keeping You Stuck

My 5-year back story as a data analytics coach:

-In 2020, I started teaching people Python online during the pandemic. I taught the basics by building insanely fun projects: Mario Cart, Rock-Paper-Scissors, Snake, etc. And I freaking loved it. I loved teaching others data! I then released a free "Predict The Stock Market w/ Python" course.  

-In 2021, I was bored and undervalued at work so I quit my corporate full-time job and set out to design the program I wish I had when I was breaking into data science. I launch the Data Career Podcast and start The Accelerator - all centered around building personal portfolio projects. 

-In 2022, I re-built the program completely from scratch based on what was actually working. I created simpler, more industry-relevant projects. The original projects were super fun, but too complicated. Simple wins. Also, I stopped teaching data science and only data analytics. Data Analyst > Data Scientist when you're getting started. 

-In 2023, I continued posting daily on LinkedIn and cross the 100,000 follower mark. Our students land jobs at NASA, Wells Fargo, and Rivian. I focus mostly on the networking & job hunting portion of the program. We built a job app tracker, interview question database, & resume templates. I also become a dad.

-In 2024, our students continue to land awesome jobs at General Motors, Humana, and Amazon. We built a new community for our students with better forums, live events, leaderboard, and membership directory. I start taking YouTube seriously & eventually hit 50,000 subscribers. I have my second kid at the end of the year. 

-In 2025, we doubled the number of students landing jobs. I added cool resources to the program like: job boards, an AI companion bot, monthly networking events, and co-working hours. I brought on two new coaches to help support time decrease (even on the weekend). 

-In 2026, I plan on doing more of the exact same. Just more. And better.

Story time. 

When I was first breaking into data, I applied to 100+ jobs and heard nothing back. 

I was stuck in "The Invisible Zone". 

Then I made 2 changes and went from ignored to multiple six-figure offers. 

Most people think they need:
→ More certifications 
→ More data tools
→ Better Python skills
 
Wrong.
 
You need to get out of "The Invisible Zone" and into "The In-Demand Candidate" quadrant.
 
The difference? Two things:
 
1. Stop spraying and praying → Start targeting your domain
2. Stop being "risky" → Start proving your skills with a portfolio
 
I was a chemical engineering major applying to EVERYTHING. Once I focused ONLY on chemistry-related data roles and built a portfolio (yes, a physical brown binder), the emails changed from silence to:
 
"We'd like to interview you." "Would you be interested in an offer?"
