I've been meaning to write a post about the sticker pictured below for nearly six months. 

The sticker has the Hebrew word "t'fargenu" written on it. "T'fargenu" is the plural imperative form of the word "l'fargen," which means, according to Wikipedia's article on the topic, to take genuine and unselfish pride in someone else's accomplishments. 

"L'fargen" comes from Yiddish (if you're not familiar with what Yiddish is, it's Judeo-German. Jews who settled in Germany about 1,000 years ago, and the language evolved from a mix of Hebrew and German. While its origins are Germanic, Yiddish spread into Eastern Europe and became the language for everyday use for centuries. It's still spoken among Chasidic Jews.).

I brought this sticker to work. It sits under my monitor. I don't always remember l'fargen--I need to work on that. But, maybe by sharing this, I can be a little more accountable.

Rejection stings. However, sometimes it stings a bit less. 

I’ll illustrate with an example: back in May, I wrote an essay about the experience of reading Dr. Dara Horn’s People Love Dead Jews for a book club in a post-October 7th world. I’ve been trying to find the right home for it. While I have my own Medium account and a blog that’s on my digital portfolio, neither of those venues are a good fit; I use those platforms to talk about content marketing and related topics. I'm also not willing to set up my own Substack. I don't publish entire essays about such topics, so I don't think it's worth the effort to set that up. So far, my efforts have been fruitless–I’ve been rejected by two digital publishers. 

While the rejections are disappointing, I’m not letting them get to me because I have other wins in my life. If I had written this essay a year earlier, when I was in the midst of an aggravating job search, those rejections would have hit much harder. When you’re being rejected for multiple opportunities at once, it’s crushing. You take it personally, even though the rejector isn’t turning you down because there’s something wrong with you. It’s hard to see that the opportunity simply isn’t a good fit. 

How do you make rejection sting less? You have to make your own wins. You can’t control whether someone accepts your essay or whether someone hires you. But you can control other things, like checking off something on your to-do list. It doesn’t have to be a big win, just something good that you’ve made happen for yourself. Wins that aren't contingent on external circumstances give you confidence so that when rejection comes along, it will be less painful.

As I've mentioned before, the company I work for has a digital learning hub. I've been taking advantage of it as much as I can. One of the books I recently finished was Shanna Hocking's One Bold Move a Day: Meaningful Actions Women Can Take to Fulfill Their Leadership and Career Potential. 

I enjoyed this book, and I'd recommend it. The title might sound a little scary--me? Bold moves? However, the author breaks steps down so that they feel manageable and actionable.

November is Mizrahi Heritage Month. “Mizrahi” means “eastern” in Hebrew, which can also be spelled “mizrachi,” because there’s no accepted standard of transliteration. 

What is Mizrahi Heritage Month? It’s a month to honor Jews from North Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia (such as but not limited to Syria, Iraq, Yemen, and Iran). These communities existed for thousands of years, in spite of persecution and sometimes violence, such as the Baghdad pogrom (called Farhud in Arabic) in 1941. 

Why am I posting about it on LinkedIn, especially because I’m not a Mizrahi Jew? There’s a great deal of disinformation and misinformation about Jews in general, and Mizrahi Jews in particular. In recent years, celebrities and influencers have made comments saying that all Jews come from Europe. Not only is this not true, it erases Mizrahi Jews, their contributions to the places where they lived, as well as their experiences with Jew hatred. Mizrahi history is an important part of Jewish history, and all Jews have a responsibility to make sure it’s not erased.
