Ahrefs ran an AI misinformation experiment. Every marketer should see the results.

TL;DR: AI doesn’t spread truth. It spreads the best-distributed story.

Here’s what Mateusz Makosiewicz from Ahrefs did 👇

He created a fake brand, planted a few made-up narratives online, then asked AI tools to explain what that brand was.

Most models confidently repeated fiction as fact - even when the official site said otherwise.

What this proves:
- AI doesn’t verify - it summarizes
- Repetition + detail > “official” pages
- If you leave gaps, AI fills them
- ...often incorrectly

How to use this for your brand (ethically):
- Define your brand narrative clearly and repeatedly
- Publish consistent explanations across multiple trusted sources
- Don’t rely on one “About” page - reinforce the same story everywhere
- Eliminate ambiguity (AI loves ambiguity… to invent things)

Yes, AI search can be manipulated. Which means narrative control is now a marketing skill.

If you don’t tell AI who you are, it will confidently tell the wrong story for you.
