I started looking for a marketing job during my MBA studies. Young and absolutely convinced that "marketing" meant a corner office at Nike or P&G, slowly ascending that corporate ladder.

So I applied to a few of these big companies. Got rejected from all of them. Not because "they just didn't see my genius". But because they understood perfectly: I was inexperienced, unproven, and, let's be honest, not remotely good enough yet.

But then my phone rang.

It was my university friend. He was working at this scrappy little marketing agency in my city.

"Dude, we need a Copywriter. Someone who can write in English. Maybe without making it sound like a Terms & Conditions page. I don’t have a lot of money to pay what you're definitely not worth right now, but this could change fast if we don't completely screw it up. You in?”

That's how it all started.

The world of content and inbound, growth marketing, GTM, building B2B/SaaS startups - all of it opened its doors to me. And like a 12-year-old me in an ice cream shop, I never wanted to leave that kingdom.

So instead of ascending the corporate ladder, I ascended the marketing ladder. Started as a Copywriter who didn't know what MRR or conversion rates were. Eventually rose through the ranks into leading marketing positions, where MRR and conversion rates are my best pals.

Nowadays, I just describe myself as a guy whose main job is turning marketing channels into absolute chaos (the good kind)… that basically do 3 things:

- Build awareness and an audience that comes to you
- Drive and retain users while accelerating revenue (in a profitable way)
- Build a brand people stick close to (not because they have to, but because they want to)

Currently growing HeyReach as their CMO and sharing all the stories here. Including the messy parts and the 3 AM moments where I question every decision that led me to debug a GTM workflow instead of becoming a doctor like my mom suggested.

And it was a good one.

(Besides my mac multiport dying mid-presentation. Luckily Stan had a spare one. Always jam with a Stan)

I helped scale two startups past $10M ARR. Here's what changes for a marketer as you move between two critical phases on this journey:

(in my experience at least)

1️⃣ $0 to $1M-$2M phase:

- Lead with your secret weapon (e.g. unique feature → position it smart)
- Marketers wear all the hats (outreach, demos, support tickets…)
- Go global from day 0 (going local makes zero sense in B2B/SaaS)
- Capture feedback like crazy (look for what attracts + retains a specific niche)
- Use your own product religiously (no excuse, figure it out)
- Pick 1-2 marketing battles that’ll win the war (sacrifice everything else)
- Run sprints, not marathons (e.g. create 5 high-quality, well-distributed content pieces INSTEAD of building a full content strategy first)
- Rent someone else's audience (integrations, piggybacking, placements…)
- Stay away from ads (usually a bad idea before you find a PMF)
- Keep analytics simple (you only need Profitwell and Sheets)
- Go for part-timer marketers only (more expertise, higher volumes, lower cost, no onboarding)
- Connect the dots strategically (e.g. one content piece can drive acquisition, onboarding, and retention)

2️⃣ $2M to $10M phase:

- Expand your ICP (depending on the product)
- Start saying no (no more tickets or demos, just marketing & strategy)
- Hire T-shaped marketers full-time (with specific specialties)
- Double down and expand channels (but don’t stretch too fast just yet)
- No more founder-led motions → decentralize, systems, predictable models
- Run pricing experiments more frequently (even when it's scary)
- When opportunity opens, start running ads (bring a pro to help set it up)
- Invest more in PLG (remove friction faster and better now)
- Leverage part-timers still, but now you have more resources
- Pace yourself against bigger rivals, but don’t sleep on anyone (shifts mindset in each phase)

The playbook isn't one-size-fits-all.

That's just how it looks from where I was standing. 4 times in the past, with a 2/4 score from my full-time adventures. 😄

Here's one of my favorite BS detectors when managing marketers (and myself).

The talk-to-execution ratio.

Someone says they're "passionate about social media" or "obsessed with brand building."

Fantastic! Now let's see the receipts:

- Your own profile. When's the last time you touched it?
- Missed your target? What's the next move? You taking it personally or not?
- What's the last podcast/book/event you geeked out over? Your key lessons?
- That brilliant idea from 2 weeks ago… where is it now?
- Show me 3 brands crushing it on social. Why are they winning?
- You posted on the company page? Did you engage with it? Did you rally the team to do the same? How are you amplifying it further or is it just us liking us?

This applies to every big claim in marketing:

My personal favorite: "I work really hard" → okay, let's unpack "hard" first.

Because when you throw in REALLY, you've just raised the stakes:

Really hard means → crushing deliverables, laser focus, putting in the hours, taking work home, owning outcomes, proactive problem-solving, zero excuses, rapid learning, studying the craft, being prepared for anything.

Words are cheap. Everyone's got a TED Talk in them.

Say it once but don't live it? Okay, we all have off days.

Do it twice? Hmm, pattern emerging.

Again? Pattern confirmed, consequences unlocked.

All in all, I think that for managers, it’s about asking the right questions and setting the standard.

For team members: it’s not their answers but their actions that count the most.

And here's the kicker - every manager has a manager.

Which means managers get to play both roles. 😇

We shouldn’t be exempt from the same scrutiny we dish out.

So if you're holding your team to a standard, you better be living it.

These 3 content problems gave me MASSIVE headaches.

The kind that make you question if you even know what you're doing anymore.

Because you're putting in the hours, shipping stuff, doing everything "right"… but the results are missing. 😫

I've been there. So has Diandra.

So we wanted to share a way out of these 3 particular content labyrinths.

3 content challenges and how to fix them

I don’t have a lot of marketing regrets, except this one.

It's a campaign I never ran.

At one previous startup, I had all the cards to run this channel. We built organic funnels perfectly and were growing 10-15% MoM.

But I didn’t add ads to the mix. (to this day it bothers me)

So I decided not to make the same mistake at HeyReach and started playing with LinkedIn ads 3 months ago.

Assembled my crew (took me a few weeks), mapped out the plan and we started swinging.

Here's what happened:

🦥 20x ROAS (influencing revenue with strength)
🦥 Profitable operation from day 1
🦥 Tested many LinkedIn ad formats (TL ads, text ads, images, spotlight)

WoM remains our greatest channel (will love that forever).

But adding ads on top of it, that’s giving it a jetpack.

A few lessons I learned:

1️⃣ Timing matters more than the budget

I didn't rush into ads. Waited until WoM and retargeting funnels were built. That foundation is why I believe we hit profitability from the start.

Ads amplified momentum we'd already built.

2️⃣ Invest in creative

It’s a very interesting content challenge. Format variety, rotation frequency, hook testing - it's a craft.

Just remember, there’s content that drives conversions. And then there’s content that fuels awareness. Different battles, same ultimate destination.

3️⃣ LinkedIn's targeting is genuinely impressive

The pixel capabilities and segmentation options are deep. If you're willing to get granular, you'll be amazed what you can discover.

4️⃣ Build GTM flywheels, not silos

Someone saw our ad but didn't sign up? Or started a free trial but didn’t convert? Qualify with AI agents, send warm leads to Nadja and her team. Ads fuel the pipeline strategically.

Because channels should never work in silos. For me, they’re like a Spartan formation at Thermopylae.

I’ll forever be an organic aficionado, but man I’m excited about this ads project.

Lots to learn and in phase 2 we double the stakes.

Bring it on. 🫡

The big topic in every growth story: attribution.

One lead = one channel. Spoiler alert: I don't care.

Revenue is what matters to me.

I have no interest in having:

- Marketing and sales operate in different universes
- Building 2x "perfect worlds" (MQLs here, SQLs there)
- Fighting over attribution and acting as two separate teams within one team

I grew up playing team sports.

I was never interested in individual rewards. (Okay, except maybe when a girl I liked was watching. Sue me. 😇)

Trophies were my primary target.

In growth, nothing's changed.

Individual rewards = attribution (sales vs. marketing)

Trophies = revenue

Don't get me wrong, attribution has its place. It helps me understand what's working and what needs tweaking.

But what actually moves the needle is deep orchestration between sales and marketing.

Because when you have 2-3 coordinated GTM signals, your chances of closing skyrocket.

Here's how it works in practice. A lead might:

🔥 Visit your website
🔥 Get qualified as Tier 1
🔥 Engage with a specific ad about your solution

Now your team can:

🚀 Send personalized outreach (sales)
🚀 Retarget with hyper-relevant ads (marketing)
🚀 Connect on LinkedIn and expose them to your content (hybrid)

When that lead closes, I'm not wasting oxygen debating if it’s a "sales win" or a "marketing win."

That's like arguing whether the assist or the shot won the game. Newsflash: both did.

All I care about:

- Did they close?
- What's the revenue impact?
- Are they actually winning with our product?
- Who’s the next lead or how do we scale this motion?

Building layers, stacking amplifying effects. E.g. We’ve defined what a high-qualified warm lead looks like? Let’s create lookalike leads and start cold outbound at the same time.

Build a team that passes the ball.

Have 5 players scoring 10 goals each.

Not 1 player scoring 50 goals.

This builds a culture where teammates set each other up for success and where everyone's ready to take the game-winning shot when they get the ball.
