Sometimes when I have introduced myself as #TheLinkedInGuru (Teacher) I have jokingly said that GURU stands for "General Understanding, Relatively Useless". Well, I believe GURU stands for "Gets to Uncover the Real Usefulness" instead.

Since I retired at the end of 2007, my focus has been volunteering and devoting my time to being a Professional Networker / LinkedIn Guru (Teacher), teaching Networking and LinkedIn and I have trained thousands of professionals in how to maximize their networking skills and best utilize networking tools.

Networking is the life-blood that feeds the process of building relationships. Networking is important in all aspects of our lives. I believe that LinkedIn is one of the best tools available to help you find the right people, connect with them and build long-term relationships. That's what I do and that's what I can help you do.

#TheLinkedInGuru Employment For Seniors is the premier resource linking mature adults with employment opportunities.  If you are 50 years of age or older, we are here to help you find employment!  If you are a Central Ohio employer, our mature, talented, skilled and dependable job seekers will provide significant value to your organization. 

EFS has provided career assistance and resources to nearly 30,000 clients, free of charge, over the past 40 years.  Our trained volunteer job counselors work with clients, prepare them for their job search, and connect them to employers through our job referral process.   Registration is an easy ½ hour appointment and can be scheduled by calling the EFS office at 614/863-1219.

For several years now I have volunteered my services to EFS as a Professional Networker/LinkedIn Guru and as a trainer focusing on how seniors can use LinkedIn as a tool for networking and job search.  I wholeheartedly support the mission of this fine organization.

Everyone has heard the phrase that a picture is worth a thousand words, right?  Well, a moving picture (video) is worth even MORE out here on LinkedIn.

Folks in my network know that I don't post very many videos.  That's because video is not my favorite type of content out here, but I STILL realize that it is very effective and meaningful.

That's why my advice this week is to try to create video and share it every once in a while.  If nothing else, it is a nice change of pace for what you share.

This week I am sharing a short 30 second video that I used for what LinkedIn used to call a "Profile Video".  LinkedIn removed this feature about 2 and a half years ago.

Raise your hand if you remember Profile Video and still have yours!

This brief video is a great way of telling folks who you are and what value you offer.

Did you know that you can manage who can see you if you are active on LinkedIn?

It shows up as a "green dot" when folks look at you in Messaging or Notifications.

It's really easy to do with this setting:

I've chosen to allow "All LinkedIn members" to see that I am on the platform while I am out here.

Other options are:

- Your connections only and
- No one

Although you can hide your active status , I recommend that you let everyone know you are here because it can lead to more engagement and more conversation on your content and comments.

BTW, LinkedIn says it is important to know that "LinkedIn may use data relating to your activity on LinkedIn to personalize our services, so that they can be more relevant and useful to you and others."

Here's a quick list of 5 things you should check out whether you are new to LinkedIn or a long-time LinkedIn user:

1) Change your URL to remove the "gobbledy-gook" default characters and make it just your name or your name and a part of your brand.

2) Make sure your Profile is written (especially your About Section) in 1st person. You wouldn't refer to yourself in 3rd person so make sure all the text on your profile is like a conversation with the person who visits.

3) Change your Professional Headline to state your unique value proposition and include strategic keywords. DON'T use special characters because they might hinder your getting found.

4) Update your Profile Photo. There is nothing worse that seeing a "blank" gray icon here and also make sure that your photo is visible to "Anyone" (even people who are not on LinkedIn).

5) Make sure you have filled in and made available as much information as you can in your "Contact Info" Section as possible. Consider including things like websites, phone number, address, and Email if you are comfortable showing this information. It will help others contact you if they are interested in what you have to offer.

Over 5 years ago I created an acronym for the community of people listed in the document below that exemplified what I thought were best practices on LinkedIn.

That acronym and that community of people are still going strong all these years later because in the end it has never really been about numbers.

It has been about building REAL relationships with REAL people.

Destination Imagination Africa

Destination Imagination in Africa is a non-governmental organization that specializes in STEAM based (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) curriculum education. We offer a suite of educational experiences which can be combined or used alone to create a solution unique to the landscape of needs for each country.
We believe that quality education goes hand-in-hand with gender equality. All learners regardless of gender must be exposed to and develop technical and soft skills. Through our STEAM-based challenges, we offer a platform where girls and boys develop technical skills based on their interests in an environment that encourages soft skill acquisition

DI Botswana was founded in 2021 in collaboration with Destination Imagination, Inc.  We have run STEAM Education project during Covid 19, two seasons reaching youth across junior and senior schools in Botswana. 
The first season, 2020-21, reached 2000 students and was funded by Lumen Technologies. The second season was co-funded by the European Union (EU) and the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development) BMZ and is jointly implemented by Enabel and GIZ. 
Through these collaborations and partnerships, Destination Imagination Botswana has served over 5000 learners in and around Gaborone, cultivating their creativity, Innovation, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
 DI Botswana also uses a boot camp format to introduce more youth to DI and has begun to work with the private schools to reach over 5,000 students over their time as licensee for Botswana

A successful businessman was on vacation in a small coastal village. One afternoon, as he strolled along the shore, he came across a fisherman hauling in his catch. The fish were large and plentiful, their scales shimmering in the sunlight.

"That's quite a catch!" the businessman said. "How long did it take you to catch them?"

"Not long," the fisherman replied with a smile.

"Why don't you fish for longer? You could catch more fish and sell them to make more money!" the businessman suggested.

The fisherman tilted his head curiously. "And then what?"

"With the extra money, you could buy a bigger boat, hire some help, and catch even more fish. Over time, you could expand into a fleet, sell internationally, and build a thriving business."

The fisherman chuckled. "And what would I do then?"

"Well, after years of hard work, you could retire, move to a quiet village, spend time with your family, fish for pleasure, and enjoy life!"

The fisherman grinned and said, "But I already do that now."

This simple yet profound story stayed with me as I traveled the world. From the bustling streets of New York to the serene landscapes of Africa, from boardrooms to rural villages, one thing remained constant: all humans, regardless of race, wealth, or status, crave happiness. 

Inspired by this realization and deeply rooted in the spirit of *Ubuntu*—the belief in our shared humanity—I founded *The Happiness Tribe*. A movement, a community, and a way of life dedicated to spreading joy, mindfulness, and a sense of belonging.

I thought I understood resilience, until 2025 tested me, refined me, and ultimately reshaped the way I see myself.

There were days I felt stretched thin, moments when the setbacks hit deeper than I’d admit, and times I questioned whether I was moving forward at all.

 It’s truly been a tough year.

But here’s the part I didn’t see coming:
 this was also the year I learned what I’m actually capable of.

Somewhere between the disappointments and the small wins, I realized something important:

Growth doesn’t happen in the moments that go right, it happens in the moments that force you to rebuild your strategy, not your spirit.

That’s the lesson I’m taking with me.

And to everyone who stood by me, encouraged me, challenged me, or simply believed in me when I was running on empty,

May your cup runneth over. 

Your presence mattered more than you know.

What gives me hope now is how quickly the world is changing, and how much potential that gives each of us.

Digital transformation is no longer optional; it’s the new foundation of opportunity.

And the people who thrive will be the ones who choose to learn, adapt, and upskill, even when life feels heavy.

So as 2025 wraps up, here’s my promise to myself:

keep growing, keep learning, keep evolving, especially when it’s hard.

Let’s finish this year with intention.

 Let’s step into 2026 with courage and capability.

I picked up my phone with my usual bubbly Tuesday morning energy…

I have carried this magazine long before it had a name.

I have often been reprimanded by my mentors about how I relate to my team.

One of them once told me, “Yes, you get into situations because you even know their kids’ names.”

And honestly… that’s a part of me I don’t wish to change, because people are not machines, they carry dreams, fears, families, and real lives behind the emails and deadlines.

I’m not easy to work with, but I deeply care.

I demand excellence, I challenge comfort zones, and I push for impact.

But my heart is fully invested in the people who stand with me.

I see their growth.
I see their pressure.
I see their commitment when no one is clapping.

Future Tech Ignite didn’t rise because of strategy alone.

It rose because a small team kept believing  …..

when our plans were messy, when our campaigns failed, 

when the economy hit hard, 

when we were exhausted but still showed up for the mission.

They stayed through the storms.
They held the line.

They carried this movement with integrity and courage.

And I’ve learned something powerful along the way:

Impact is built by people who care not by perfect systems.

Leadership is not about distance.

It’s about presence.
It’s about empathy.
It’s about knowing the human behind the role and choosing to believe in their potential even when life stretches them thin.

To my team:

Thank you for standing beside me when everything felt uncertain.

Thank you for giving this mission your energy, your nights, your faith.

Thank you for being the quiet strength behind every milestone we celebrate.

Future Tech Ignite is not my victory, it’s the collective heartbeat of a team that refused to give up.

And if caring “too much” is my leadership flaw… I’ll own it proudly.
