Sometimes when I have introduced myself as #TheLinkedInGuru (Teacher) I have jokingly said that GURU stands for "General Understanding, Relatively Useless". Well, I believe GURU stands for "Gets to Uncover the Real Usefulness" instead.

Since I retired at the end of 2007, my focus has been volunteering and devoting my time to being a Professional Networker / LinkedIn Guru (Teacher), teaching Networking and LinkedIn and I have trained thousands of professionals in how to maximize their networking skills and best utilize networking tools.

Networking is the life-blood that feeds the process of building relationships. Networking is important in all aspects of our lives. I believe that LinkedIn is one of the best tools available to help you find the right people, connect with them and build long-term relationships. That's what I do and that's what I can help you do.

#TheLinkedInGuru Employment For Seniors is the premier resource linking mature adults with employment opportunities.  If you are 50 years of age or older, we are here to help you find employment!  If you are a Central Ohio employer, our mature, talented, skilled and dependable job seekers will provide significant value to your organization. 

EFS has provided career assistance and resources to nearly 30,000 clients, free of charge, over the past 40 years.  Our trained volunteer job counselors work with clients, prepare them for their job search, and connect them to employers through our job referral process.   Registration is an easy ½ hour appointment and can be scheduled by calling the EFS office at 614/863-1219.

For several years now I have volunteered my services to EFS as a Professional Networker/LinkedIn Guru and as a trainer focusing on how seniors can use LinkedIn as a tool for networking and job search.  I wholeheartedly support the mission of this fine organization.

Everyone has heard the phrase that a picture is worth a thousand words, right?  Well, a moving picture (video) is worth even MORE out here on LinkedIn.

Folks in my network know that I don't post very many videos.  That's because video is not my favorite type of content out here, but I STILL realize that it is very effective and meaningful.

That's why my advice this week is to try to create video and share it every once in a while.  If nothing else, it is a nice change of pace for what you share.

This week I am sharing a short 30 second video that I used for what LinkedIn used to call a "Profile Video".  LinkedIn removed this feature about 2 and a half years ago.

Raise your hand if you remember Profile Video and still have yours!

This brief video is a great way of telling folks who you are and what value you offer.

Did you know that you can manage who can see you if you are active on LinkedIn?

It shows up as a "green dot" when folks look at you in Messaging or Notifications.

It's really easy to do with this setting:

I've chosen to allow "All LinkedIn members" to see that I am on the platform while I am out here.

Other options are:

- Your connections only and
- No one

Although you can hide your active status , I recommend that you let everyone know you are here because it can lead to more engagement and more conversation on your content and comments.

BTW, LinkedIn says it is important to know that "LinkedIn may use data relating to your activity on LinkedIn to personalize our services, so that they can be more relevant and useful to you and others."

Here's a quick list of 5 things you should check out whether you are new to LinkedIn or a long-time LinkedIn user:

1) Change your URL to remove the "gobbledy-gook" default characters and make it just your name or your name and a part of your brand.

2) Make sure your Profile is written (especially your About Section) in 1st person. You wouldn't refer to yourself in 3rd person so make sure all the text on your profile is like a conversation with the person who visits.

3) Change your Professional Headline to state your unique value proposition and include strategic keywords. DON'T use special characters because they might hinder your getting found.

4) Update your Profile Photo. There is nothing worse that seeing a "blank" gray icon here and also make sure that your photo is visible to "Anyone" (even people who are not on LinkedIn).

5) Make sure you have filled in and made available as much information as you can in your "Contact Info" Section as possible. Consider including things like websites, phone number, address, and Email if you are comfortable showing this information. It will help others contact you if they are interested in what you have to offer.

Over 5 years ago I created an acronym for the community of people listed in the document below that exemplified what I thought were best practices on LinkedIn.

That acronym and that community of people are still going strong all these years later because in the end it has never really been about numbers.

It has been about building REAL relationships with REAL people.

Did you know that there is a long list of trusted solutions partners that you can use to help you market your business on LinkedIn?

The list even includes some long-time players like Adobe, Canva, and Hootsuite.

And, most important, and the GOOD NEWS is all of these solutions are APPROVED for use with LinkedIn.

Now for the BAD NEWS... if you are using a package that is NOT on this list then you are in violation of LinkedIn's Terms of Service and your account could be restricted.

As many of my other LinkedIn collaborators put it "If it's NOT on the list... you must resist"!

Scottish Rural and Islands Transport Community

The Rural & Islands Transport Community (SRITC) is a not-for-profit Social Enterprise that was founded in 2017 and became a Community Interest Company (CIC) in June 2021. Our mission is to build a community that works together to address the many transport challenges facing rural and islands communities. 

SRITC is the focal point for anyone who is concerned about the long-term prosperity of rural communities, & motivated to engage and support the work needed to create accessible, affordable and sustainable transport services. 

We are unique because we are the only transport focused oganisation that connects and supports stakeholders at all levels of society, from individuals and local community groups through to national Government bodies. 

While rural transport is our main focus, our work extends to the sectors that are dependent on transport services including healthcare, tourism, and freight. 

SRITC also plays an active role in helping to shape rural and islands transport policy at a national level. We are regularly invited to provide written feedback on Scottish Government transport strategy consultations, and spoken evidence to Parliamentary committees.

Shackleton Technologies is one of Scotland’s premier IT Managed Service Providers (MSPs) and my role there was primarily focused on processes and business operations.

I was responsible for leading our tech and admin teams, and completely rewriting all new content for our large, out of date website.

I was also responsible for the company’s marketing, writing articles and blogs for our website and for posting on social media. 

As part of a leadership team of 4, I participated in extensive, EOS Implementer led, training (18 months) in the Entrepreneurial Operating System, a US business methodology that is globally renowned for its effectiveness in transforming business performance. 

I continue to teach some of the techniques I learned during that training today.

I worked very closely with the business’ owner to roll out immediately impactful changes to the way we sold our services to clients, increasing our profitability and improving our customers’ experience.

Network ROI is a Managed IT Services company based in Roslin near Edinburgh and during my three years working there, I delivered the three biggest performing, consecutive years, in the company's history. Including the sale of single support contract at c£20k/month.

My responsibilities focused on rapid business growth, new and existing business development, management of key accounts, contract negotiation, complaints resolution, document creation, i.e. tenders, proposals, contracts, T's & C's, sub-contractor and partnership agreements and more.

I introduced high-volume new business and the largest value and most profitable contracts in the company's history, driving them to unprecedented growth.

I was responsible for the development of a brand new division for the company, based around one of the world's first mobile phone apps, which enabled mobile working and data capture. 

The product had been available since 2004 and had still to win its first customer. 

My responsibility was to identify and define new potential markets for the product.

I was very successful in developing opportunities in business sectors where the company had no previous exposure, including, Water Treatment and Legionella Control, PAT Testing, COSHH testing, Facilities Management, NHS Supply Chain (England and Wales) and NHS Facilities Scotland. 

I saw a large volume of definitive new business wins from organisations such as, SMS Environmental, ChardFM and Filing Plus. 

Also confirmed high value orders from new customers such as Oxford Brookes, Reading and Birmingham universities, F.E.S. and various others. 

The single highest value new business win, was from Bristol University, for a project to be delivered in 3 phases and with a total value of several £million.
