Sometimes when I have introduced myself as #TheLinkedInGuru (Teacher) I have jokingly said that GURU stands for "General Understanding, Relatively Useless". Well, I believe GURU stands for "Gets to Uncover the Real Usefulness" instead.

Since I retired at the end of 2007, my focus has been volunteering and devoting my time to being a Professional Networker / LinkedIn Guru (Teacher), teaching Networking and LinkedIn and I have trained thousands of professionals in how to maximize their networking skills and best utilize networking tools.

Networking is the life-blood that feeds the process of building relationships. Networking is important in all aspects of our lives. I believe that LinkedIn is one of the best tools available to help you find the right people, connect with them and build long-term relationships. That's what I do and that's what I can help you do.

#TheLinkedInGuru Employment For Seniors is the premier resource linking mature adults with employment opportunities.  If you are 50 years of age or older, we are here to help you find employment!  If you are a Central Ohio employer, our mature, talented, skilled and dependable job seekers will provide significant value to your organization. 

EFS has provided career assistance and resources to nearly 30,000 clients, free of charge, over the past 40 years.  Our trained volunteer job counselors work with clients, prepare them for their job search, and connect them to employers through our job referral process.   Registration is an easy ½ hour appointment and can be scheduled by calling the EFS office at 614/863-1219.

For several years now I have volunteered my services to EFS as a Professional Networker/LinkedIn Guru and as a trainer focusing on how seniors can use LinkedIn as a tool for networking and job search.  I wholeheartedly support the mission of this fine organization.

Everyone has heard the phrase that a picture is worth a thousand words, right?  Well, a moving picture (video) is worth even MORE out here on LinkedIn.

Folks in my network know that I don't post very many videos.  That's because video is not my favorite type of content out here, but I STILL realize that it is very effective and meaningful.

That's why my advice this week is to try to create video and share it every once in a while.  If nothing else, it is a nice change of pace for what you share.

This week I am sharing a short 30 second video that I used for what LinkedIn used to call a "Profile Video".  LinkedIn removed this feature about 2 and a half years ago.

Raise your hand if you remember Profile Video and still have yours!

This brief video is a great way of telling folks who you are and what value you offer.

Did you know that you can manage who can see you if you are active on LinkedIn?

It shows up as a "green dot" when folks look at you in Messaging or Notifications.

It's really easy to do with this setting:

I've chosen to allow "All LinkedIn members" to see that I am on the platform while I am out here.

Other options are:

- Your connections only and
- No one

Although you can hide your active status , I recommend that you let everyone know you are here because it can lead to more engagement and more conversation on your content and comments.

BTW, LinkedIn says it is important to know that "LinkedIn may use data relating to your activity on LinkedIn to personalize our services, so that they can be more relevant and useful to you and others."

Here's a quick list of 5 things you should check out whether you are new to LinkedIn or a long-time LinkedIn user:

1) Change your URL to remove the "gobbledy-gook" default characters and make it just your name or your name and a part of your brand.

2) Make sure your Profile is written (especially your About Section) in 1st person. You wouldn't refer to yourself in 3rd person so make sure all the text on your profile is like a conversation with the person who visits.

3) Change your Professional Headline to state your unique value proposition and include strategic keywords. DON'T use special characters because they might hinder your getting found.

4) Update your Profile Photo. There is nothing worse that seeing a "blank" gray icon here and also make sure that your photo is visible to "Anyone" (even people who are not on LinkedIn).

5) Make sure you have filled in and made available as much information as you can in your "Contact Info" Section as possible. Consider including things like websites, phone number, address, and Email if you are comfortable showing this information. It will help others contact you if they are interested in what you have to offer.

Over 5 years ago I created an acronym for the community of people listed in the document below that exemplified what I thought were best practices on LinkedIn.

That acronym and that community of people are still going strong all these years later because in the end it has never really been about numbers.

It has been about building REAL relationships with REAL people.

🚨How to generate over 20K impressions in one day on LinkedIn? 
1. Go to "LinkedIn news" in your desktop homepage feed (upper right of page)
2. Find an article that is related to your area of expertise.
3. Add a thoughtful comment, and add to the conversation.

I am 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘥 to see that my comment on someone else's post has already generated over 21,000 impressions in 1 day. 

My own posts? They've generated 8,700 in the past week. 

This might just be a fluke. Or it might line up with what a lot of the other LinkedIn coaches and strategists are saying: Linkedin is giving heavier emphasis on comments than on our own posts.

Maybe I should shift to posting once a week and COMMENTING on trending news posts daily.

But then again, these impressions aren't leading to higher profile views or any new inquiries for me yet.

What's your best tip for AEO / GEO? I'll start:
✅ ASK if you don't know what AEO or GEO means, but you know it's related to search engine optimization (SEO). In today's Innovation Women call, I asked in chat, "What is AEO?" (thinking it was AI engine optimization... it's not) and then I asked "What is GEO?"

Someone said AEO = Answer Engine Optimization

I must be doing something right, because I am getting new inbound LinkedIn coaching clients who say they found me from AI.

Someone said GEO = Generative Engine Optimization, which is the same thing as AEO. Are they right? Comment below and tell me your thoughts. 😎

3 reasons you're not getting leads through LinkedIn, despite your sales team all having a LinkedIn profile.
❌ Their profiles aren't optimized for your ideal target audience.
❌ They are hesitant to use LinkedIn, because they don't want you as their boss, or their coworkers, to think they're using LinkedIn to find a job
❌ They are selling too heavily in their invitations and DMs. LinkedIn is a long game. They need to slow down.

Self-employed? STEAL my #marketing  strategy of spotlighting a LinkedIn recommendation in a post. Maybe even call it #TestimonialTuesday (because people believe what OTHERS say about you more than what you say about yourself!).

Here's how:

1. Identify a person to spotlight. 
   
2. Create an animated gif in Canva featuring your brand colors, font, and the words "Testimonial Tuesday" -- adding animation to the text (I selected Animation and then "Clarify"), and then saving it as a gif file formal. I recommend using a screen capture of their LinkedIn top header card instead of the actual recommendation.
   
3. While technicially you don't NEED to check with them first, you might want to, especially if you're not sure they will want the boost of visibility. Maxine Legall, MBA, MSW, CPXP  and I are on an accountability call together every Monday, and she agreed to be my first feature. 
   
4. After prepping the post and adding the gif as your image, copy/paste the body of their LinkedIn recommendation in your post, like this:
   
   "I met Brenda Meller through Innovation Women, and from the very beginning she stood out as kind, gracious, and incredibly generous with her expertise. Brenda has spent years mastering and truly understanding LinkedIn — no small task on a platform that changes constantly. 
   
   But she approaches it with intentionality, patience, and a genuine desire to help others grow.

🥧 Let's talk about PIE. It's the day prior to Thanksgiving here in the USA, and pies are being baked in kitchens across the country. Back in July, I emailed my 4,500+ subscribers and asked them two questions:

1. What is your current LinkedIn membership type?

⏺️ Premium Career

⏺️ Sales Navigator Core
⏺️ Sales Navigator Advanced
⏺️ Recruiter Lite
⏺️ Recruiter Corporate

2. What is your FAVORITE kind of pie? (select one)
🥧 Fruit Pie (Apple, Cherry, Blueberry, etc.)
🥧 Cream Pie (Banana Cream, Chocolate Cream, Coconut Cream, etc.)
🥧 Custard Pies (Pumpkin Pie, Sweet Potato Pie, etc.)
🥧 Savory Pies (Chicken Pot Pie, Veggie Pot Pie, Lobster Pot Pie, etc.)
🥧 Meringue Pies (Lemon Meringue, S'Mores Pie, etc.)
🥧 Nut Pies (Pecan Pie, etc.)
🥧 I don't like pie
🥧 Is cheesecake pie? If so, cheesecake.

And here are the results. 108 responded by the way, so this is statistically valid, I believe (perhaps someone who is a research expert can confirm). 📊
