Because they are almost certainly a narcissist.

Non-narcissists have compassion and even in divorce don't want to see you (and/or any children involved) left in a precarious position.

Narcissists do NOT feel compassion or empathy and will want to make you pay in every possible way.

Why?

Whether or not you were the one who called time on the relationship, in their eyes you stopped being their narcissistic supply (loving/adoring them, seeing them as the centre of your universe etc).

They HATE losing supply (even though they will inevitably have other 'supplies' already on the go) and will want to make you PAY. Some do not stop until they have literally destroyed you.
