A client once told me:

“I’ll know it when I see it.”

That was the entire brief.

No goal.
No definition of “better.”
No success metric.

Just… vibes.

And I respect vibes.
But not as a strategy.

After 12+ years designing complex B2B and enterprise platforms, 
I’ve learned:

That sentence means one thing:
We’re about to play design roulette.

And here’s how that goes (every time):

→ Version 1: “Hmm… close.”
→ Version 2: “Not quite.”
→ Version 3: “Feels off.”
→ Version 4: “It’s missing something.”

Because no one ever defined what “it” is.
And you can’t hit a target that doesn’t exist.

So now when I hear:
“I’ll know it when I see it.”

I pause. 

Then I ask:

• Why does this still feel like the “early startup” version of us?
• Would a serious enterprise buyer take this seriously?
• Does this make it obvious what we actually do?

Because design isn’t mind reading.
It’s decision-making.

And vague briefs don’t create bold results.

The clearer the brief,
the less you need to “see it” to know it’s right.

This is a note to my younger self.

Stop chasing 100%.

You don’t grow in 100% jumps.
You grow in 1%.

I used to believe growth had to feel big.

A big move.
A loud win.
A noticeable upgrade.

If it didn’t feel dramatic…
I thought it didn’t count.

That mindset?
Exhausting.

Because life doesn’t move in big cinematic leaps.
It moves in small, almost invisible upgrades.

But I didn’t trust small.

So I’d redesign what wasn’t broken.
Polish what was already clear.
Second-guess what was already decided.

1%.

That’s it.

Here’s the truth:
1% repeated beats 100% once.

Every. Single. Time.

3. You whisper, “wow.”
4. You look back at yours… and it suddenly feels smaller.
5. You quietly rethink everything.

Welcome to imposter syndrome.

And no - it doesn’t go away at senior level.

After 12+ years designing complex B2B systems,

owning messy workflows most designers avoid…

I still feel it sometimes.

Imposter syndrome doesn’t mean you’re not good.

It means you can see excellence.
And seeing excellence is a skill.

That’s how standards rise.

That’s growth.

Before you add another feature,

Look at what McDonald’s just did.

They partnered with Drake’s brand (OVO)
and launched a limited “Afters” meal in Canada.

They didn’t add anything.
And that’s the point.

Same fries.
Same Sprite.
Same McDouble.

But suddenly…

It feels exclusive.

And here’s what founders miss:
Growth doesn’t always come from adding features.

McDonald’s didn’t ship new functionality.
They changed the context.

They added:
→ Identity
→ Meaning
→ Cultural signal

Perception shifted.
(Without increasing complexity)

Meanwhile, most startups try to fix retention by building more.

More dashboards.
More tools.
More power.

But power without positioning feels heavy.
And heavy doesn’t convert.

Sometimes your product isn’t underbuilt.
It’s under-framed.

Before your next sprint, ask:

Are we missing capability…
Or missing clarity?

Most founders are fixing the wrong problem.

It’s why I’m writing this post.

People won’t remember your features.
They’ll remember how you made them feel.

(Read that again)

You think they’ll remember:

• Your AI engine
• Your 37 integrations
• Your new dashboard release

They won’t.

They’ll remember:

• “This was confusing.”
• “This just felt… heavy.”
• “I wasn’t sure what to click.”

And stress kills trust.

Here’s the part most teams miss:

Clarity feels calm.
Confusion feels risky.
Friction feels disrespectful.

And people don’t stay where they feel bad.

So instead of asking:
“What else should we ADD?”

Ask:
“How should this FEEL?”

That question changes everything.

I see this all the time in SaaS.

Teams build features.

But they never measure friction.

If the main task in your product takes:

6 clicks
3 menus
and a tooltip

You don’t have a feature problem.

You have a clarity problem.

Good UX removes decisions.
Bad UX adds them.

We replaced clarity with access.

In an office, you hesitate before interrupting.

Instead of progress.

The more unclear things are…
The more messages you get.

The less real work happens.

It’s a loop.

Remote work didn’t create the chaos.
It just made it visible.

Pause. There is a better way.

AI was supposed to save time.
So why does it feel like more work?

Tool #1 generates the idea
Tool #2 turns it into an image
Tool #3 animates it
Tool #4 edits the copy
Tool #5 refines the prompt

ChatGPT → Midjourney → Runway → Claude → Figma

New tab.
Export.
Upload.
Rewrite prompt.
Repeat.
