During my years in the field, I founded, built, and sold a specialty publishing business, Personnel Policy Service, Inc., focusing on employment law compliance.  
. 
We developed and kept up-to-date a comprehensive 800-page manual (print and digital) of model human resources policies. Each of the 60+ policy models was meticulously annotated for management insights and rationale plus all the laws, regulations, and court cases impacting the policy. 

In addition, we had an 8-page monthly newsletter and a weekly ezine. 

We were the leading experts in the practical day-to-day impact of complicated employment laws like the ADA, FMLA, and FLSA. Our guiding focus was to provide simple explanations to business owners, HR professionals, and lawyers on timely and difficult issues such as harassment, discipline, leaves of absence, and working from home (even before the pandemic).   

Our subscribers ranged in size from small businesses to industry giants like Monsanto and Cisco. 

In building the business, I gained extensive publishing, editing, and proofreading knowledge and experience by actively participating in the Specialized Publishing Industry Association (SIPA) programs in Washington. I served on its Board of Directors for eight years.

More recently, I sold our publishing assets to BLR/Simplify Compliance and then took time off to enjoy travel and devote time to local volunteer interests.

Prison of Peace

Prison of Peace is an award-winning non-profit organization that trains life and long-term incarcerated people in maximum security prisons to be powerful peacemakers and mediators. 

Our goal is to transform the mindset of individuals from serving a life sentence to a life of service.  

I founded the project in 2009 with my colleague Laural Kaufer, working with inmates at Valley State Prison for Women in Chowchilla, California. As of 2021, 3500+ have graduated from Prison of Peace programs with 700 released from custody. It is currently offered in 14 jail facilities in California and one in Connecticut. Internationally, our colleagues are operating Prison of Peace in Italy and Greece.

Before participating in the program, 60% of prisoners reported having low communication skills, and 73% reported an inability to manage strong emotions. After participating in the program, 95% reported having high communication skills, 84% reported a significantly enhanced ability to manage strong emotions and 99% reported that the workshop introduced them to new skills for use in solving problems or conflicts in their lives and/or communication. 

Prison of Peace is designed to equip individuals to rediscover their humanity, become aware of their own emotions, and begin to understand and reflect the emotions of others. In learning peace-making and mediation skills, individuals are taught how people evade personal accountability and how to morally re-engage those who have become morally disengaged. 

As a by-product, many inmates have re-engaged themselves, consciously reflecting on and aligning their actions to moral values, principles and ethical standards. We’ve also seen a reduction in violence within the prison communities we have worked with, and personal arguments have reportedly reduced in quantity and intensity, with many being averted.

I wrote this book as a critique of the international diplomatic community’s inability to mediate conflicts worldwide. It’s a startling truth that only 3% of all conflict ends in peace, compared to 90% in the commercial world. In this book, I go behind the headlines to provide an in-depth analysis to understand why crucial negotiations fail. 

I argue that diplomats often enter negotiations with flawed assumptions about human behavior, sovereignty, and power, and are using a model of European diplomacy that dates back to the 18th century to solve 21st-century problems. 

I provide numerous examples that the key failure in current diplomatic efforts is the entrenched belief that nations, through their representatives, will act rationally to further their individual political, economic, and strategic interests. However, scientific understanding of how people act and see their world does not support this theory. On the contrary, research from decision-making theory, behavioral economics, social neuropsychology, and current best practices in mediation indicate that emotional and irrational factors often have much, if not more, to do with the success or failure of a mediated solution. 

Reviewing a wide range of conflicts and negotiations, I demonstrate that the best efforts of negotiators often fail because they fail to consider the deep-seated values and emotions of the disputing parties. I draw on my long experience as a professional mediator to describe the process of building trust and creating a climate of empathy that is the key to successful negotiation and can go a long way toward resolving even seemingly intractable conflicts.
