Be extremely easy to work with.

Be an optimist.

Respond quickly to requests.
Always do what you said you'd do.

That's the basics.
That's really the whole strategy.

An alarming number of people are bad at all of these things.

They're pessimistic.
They're miserable to be around.
They take weeks or months to respond.
They drop the ball on every major project.

Then, when that eventually catches up to them (it always does), they tell the whole world that everyone else is the problem.

I've worked with a lot of incredible people over 23 years.

The ones I stay in touch with had a few things in common:

They were excellent at their job.
They made my life (and MY job) easier.

Your brain is sick and tired of content.

It wants you to be creative.

1. The more you create, the happier you are:

On the days I'm sharing my creations, my mood is incredibly elevated. There's nothing better than learning something and sharing it with other people.

2. The more you consume, the more pessimistic you become:

Whenever I go down a rabbit hole on LinkedIn or X, I get bummed out. Culture wars, fighting, lack of empathy for our fellow humans. It's gross.

3. The longer you write, the better at your craft you become:

If you write every single day for a long time, you will eventually become a relatively decent writer. And there's no better way to communicate your thoughts.

4. The more you outsource creative work to AI, the dumber you become:

The more AI does your creative work, the more you forget how to be creative and original. You sound like everyone else. You blend in. You're not interesting.

TL;DR:

1. Create daily
2. Consume less
3. Write until you're good
4. Don't outsource creative

If you don't believe me, look at the vast majority of successful people on this platform.

They aren't jerks.
They don't play games.

Is it a perfect data point? 
Do haters sometimes win?

Of course.

But I'm not interested in the outliers.
I'm interested in what happens 90% of the time.

Lead from the front, be optimistic and supportive and lift someone up when you see them accomplish something worth celebrating.

Be a karma entrepreneur.

Because even if you're successful as a hater, it's far more lonely when you get there, and nobody's there to congratulate you.

Unhappy people ignore the basics.

They make life insanely complicated.

They sleep poorly.
They neglect their relationships.
They destroy their health while building.

The happiest people I know do four (boring) things really well:

1. Marry someone who compliments them.
2. Spend time working on their health.
3. Build a business they own.
4. Protect their time.

That's it.

Sure, there are lots of other things that are nice to get right, but if you nail these?

You're miles ahead of the average person.

The basics aren't sexy.
But they're the whole game.

Maybe nobody in your family is an entrepreneur.

Nobody in mine is.

They didn't work for themselves.
Nobody built something from scratch.

My parents didn't bet their income on an idea they had in the shower.

From when I was a kid, the path was always laid out:

Get a degree, get a job, stay for 40 years, and retire.

That was the plan. 
And everyone I know from back home followed it.

So when you say "I want to build something on my own," sometimes you don't have anyone in your corner who understands.

They're not being mean or disinterested.

They just don't have a frame of reference for what you're describing.

I've found that to be a big advantage, actually.

The people who grew up around entrepreneurs usually inherited someone else's playbook.

They work through a set of assumptions about what a business should look like. 

How much funding to raise. 
How hard it's supposed to feel.
How many employees you need. 

Maybe you don't carry any of that baggage.

You get to start with a blank page. 

You don't have to live up to anyone else's expectations about how big your business should be, or how fast it should grow, or what success is supposed to look like.

The first person in any family to do something different has one thing nobody else has: 

The freedom to define their life and business from absolute scratch.

You just have to be willing to figure it out without a map.

Pessimists are right.

Optimists are winners.

It sounds cheesy and cliché, but the fact is, you attract people like yourself.

You're going to lose.

Be excited.

Support everyone around you.
Make connections that are helpful.

Whatever you lack in skills and knowledge can be at least partly made up for in your sheer attitude.

The richest people I know aren't multi-millionaires.

They're people with empty calendars.

They hardly have any meetings. 
They don't have Slack on their computer. 
Sunday night is just like Thursday night...

No dread.

They designed their businesses primarily for peace of mind.

Everyone else is on autopilot, doing the exact opposite.

More clients.
More projects.
More revenue.
More complexity.

And every time they add more, they get less of what actually matters in life.

I know because I did this for a long time. I took a startup from $0 to $70M and nearly destroyed myself in the process.

Not sleeping. 
Coping with alcohol. 
Paramedics at my house after a panic attack.

Nobody told me to live like that. I just kept saying yes to the next logical thing until I looked up and didn't recognize my own life.

So when I built my own business, I designed it around one question: What do I want my average weekday to look like?

Here's how I approached it (and how you can too):

1. Set your "enough" number. 

Not your dream number. 
The one where money stops being a daily worry. 
Build to that and don't go beyond it.

2. Work backwards from your ideal day. 

What time do you stop working? 
How many meetings do you have? 
When do you exercise, eat, read, hang with fam? 
If the model doesn't fit the life, change the model.

3. Subtract before you add. 

Every new project costs you your time. 
Before adding, ask "what does this take away from?" 
If it takes away something important, don't add it.

4. Automate earning money. 

Your sales page, your emails, your delivery. 
Everything should be automated. 
If you have to be "on" 24/7, it's not a business.

5. Protect empty time like it's revenue.

The white space on your calendar is yours.
It's where your best decisions happen. 
Fill it, and everything gets worse.

Save this post and revisit it often. 

It's the difference between building something that makes you money and building something that makes you absolutely miserable.

On August 2nd, 2019, a good friend of mine told me I was making "the dumbest mistake of my career."

The day before, I had walked away from a high-paying C-level role at a company worth north of $500M.

I'm sure he wasn't the only person who felt that way.

I think my parents might have.
Most of my friends probably did.

My only thought was to act on it accordingly.

So I made an "unreasonable" choice.

And that choice led me to the life I live today.

One with:

- Curiosity
- Freedom
- Autonomy
- Excitement

Sometimes choices that look wrong build lives that feel right.

Here's my personal take on it:

4. Build cool $h*t: 
The best vehicle that lets you achieve this.

5. Travel the world: 
Learn how others live so you can relate.

(and of course, for each person, there are other additions)

Things not on this list:

1. Working weekends.
2. Climbing the corporate ladder.
3. Chasing the most money possible.
4. Working to impress people you don't even like.

The crazy part is that most people spend 90% of their time on the second list.

Then they wonder why they feel empty when they "win" that game.

Here's what I've learned building my business:

The more I subtract, the more I can focus on the first list.

Fewer projects to manage.
Fewer obligations on my calendar.
Fewer things that pull me away from what matters.

You don't need more. 
You need less of the wrong stuff.

Protect the five. 
Ignore the rest.

They got over the cringe of being public.

They stopped waiting for someone to hand them a mic.

They started acting like they belonged in the conversation.

It never stops feeling a little weird.
You just get used to it.

You realize that staying invisible is a choice with consequences.

So if you're sitting on some expertise, ideas, or a business you believe in, please stop hiding it.

The world isn't coming to find you.

You have to go find the world.

I spent nearly two decades making other people extremely wealthy.

That's how it works.

You generate money for the business.
You keep about 25% of that.

They keep the rest.

Every deal closed, dollar earned, and team built had a huge baked-in margin for the company.

They reaped the rewards of upside.
I got the salary and bonus.

At 38, I came to my senses:
