I heard a founder say this to me the other day... “brand is fluff.”

Me: .... ah... OK... Then stop expecting inbound to magically get cheaper.

Founders that dismiss brand because it’s not as clean as a lead form are missing the point, because brand isn’t just vibes.

It’s a leading indicators that show up before revenue does.

Here's how you should be treating brand instead.

- Brand search volume -- Are more people literally typing your name into Google? That’s awareness you didn’t pay for today… but you’ll benefit from later.

- Mentions (social + web) -- If nobody is talking about you, you’re not top-of-mind. If mentions rise, your distribution is starting to work.

- Direct + organic traffic trends -- Direct traffic is “I already know you.” Organic is “I found you while solving a problem.” Both are signals you’re earning attention.

- Audience growth (followers / subscribers) -- These aren't vanity metrics. It's like inventory. A growing audience is a cheaper way to reach buyers repeatedly.

- Directly responsible for IBM Watson Health website, as well as the operation and management of acquisition-inherited web properties. Additionally, serve as product owner for various acquisition-based legacy intranet apps.

- Managed team of 5 direct reports, implemented OKRs, handled annual assessments & bonus incentives, and worked closely with HR for new resource acquisition by writing job descriptions and interviewing candidates.

- Coordinated project efforts between direct report team and multiple cross-functional teams (both internal and vendor-based), collectively directing development efforts of 15-20 individual contributors, delivering 3-5 projects / yr (not including ongoing maintenance operations).

- Improved deployment processes by educating teams on source control and continuous integration methodologies, increasing feature release schedule by ~33%.

- Developed self-service strategy by producing internal knowledge base to reduce ticket turnaround time for SharePoint business customers, reducing the SharePoint ticket queues from reporting team’s responsibilities by ~95%.

- Implemented Kanban to conform with corporate Agile mandate, improving team’s process efficiency and capacity to innovate. Took on the role of Agile coach to mentor other teams on adopting this process. Reduced task turnaround to (85% = 3 days / 50% = 1 day).

- Directed corporate migration plan to assimilate truvenhealth.com, simpler.com, 100tophospitals.com and micromedex.com under the IBM Watson Health umbrella while managing competing expectations between marketing, product, support, human resources and legal.

- Fostered a culture of accountability by adopting a custom team-scoring system that exposed contribution percentages while inhibiting under/over-working, leading to an increase in team morale, delivery transparency, and stakeholder satisfaction.

- Directly responsible for troubleshooting, maintenance, and operation of various internally developed web applications -- including the intranet.

- Performed deep analysis of legacy apps (including troubleshooting/stability passes), then drafted extensive documentation to serve as both technical and functional specification. Coordinated ongoing development/maintenance efforts with 3rd party vendors/contractors leveraging this documentation.

- Identified weaknesses in corporate DevOps rigidity and advocated for/designed/implemented an improved SDLC to favor self-healing systems.

- Collaborated with PMO (Office of the Project Managers) to coordinate the development and maintenance calendars & deadlines on various software projects, assuring stakeholder transparency.

- Developed relationships between key stakeholders and business operations in order to balance feature buy-in with development schedule trade-offs, improving satisfaction of both client and service provider.

- Led the architectural design, programming, and deployment of a proprietary LMS that served as a unified portal for oncological continuing medical education.

- Acted as technical lead, directing and mentoring junior development work while maintaining personal development responsibilities on the project.

- Coordinated with/supplemented back-end engineering in order to meet delivery deadlines.
Documented training materials necessary to educate content production/publishing departments, and took on the responsibility of training them (both remote and on-premise) at major releases/updates.

Senior ColdFusion Developer

Xylem CCI

- Assumed product ownership of proprietary CMS, leading both individual implementation efforts as well as ongoing evolution of the product, resulting in the production of many vendor websites across multiple verticals including (but not limited to) professional sports teams, real estate, pharmaceuticals, restaurants, and education.

- Acted as technical lead on all projects, and was responsible for the programming of over 80% of those projects.

- Refined architecture for proprietary “PowerTrip” CMS in order to enhance productivity, usability, and search-engine optimization.

- Designed a template-based system allowing design teams to quickly / efficiently slice comps into HTML/CSS boilerplates that could then be loaded into PowerTrip with ease. As a result, baseline project timelines were reduced from 3 weeks to 3 days.

- Mentored all new team members in the implementation of PowerTrip sites, and acted as a support for those team members (as needed). Additionally acted as instructor for delivery to new customers, upon receiving their new PowerTrip website.
