Awa Digital Aotearoa

Awa Digital is a Māori owned health tech start-up that builds tech solutions for the health and wellbeing of all New Zealanders.

Our flagship product, Tuhi (pronounced two-hee), is an audio transcription tool that uses AI to analyse, organise and output patient consultation notes. Tuhi is an AI (Artificial Intelligence) companion, that helps empower Clinicians to deliver ongoing high quality care. Tuhi alleviates the burden of menial administrative tasks and activities associated with note and record taking during patient consultations. 

Tuhi records the Clinician-Patient consult as an audio file, which is then automatically stored and made readily available for playback in the future. The audio file is transcribed from audio to text, and then output into a SOAP formatted summary which can be saved against the patients NHI record.

Tuhi is an innovative homegrown health tech solution proudly created by Māori, for all.

The KiwiSaaS Establishment Board will guide the transition of our community from a government-led initiative to an industry-driven, member-supported network. Its role is to shape the community’s purpose, strategic goals, and work plan, while defining the value we deliver to members and building a sustainable membership base. The board will also establish a formal governance structure, setting the foundation for an elected Executive Council that truly represents and serves our vibrant KiwiSaaS community.

The AI Forum NZ is committed to our purpose to ensure that we embed Te Ao Māori in our work.  To ensure that Māori has a voice, we are establishing ‘Te Kāhui Māori Atamai Iahiko’  a Māori Advisory Panel in AI.  The role of the panel will be to advise and support our organisation with ensuring our a Te Ao Māori purpose and explore the impact of AI to Māori peoples.  Our Advisory panel will ensure that the voices of Māori will be heard bringing to life our commitment to help harness the power of AI to enable a prosperous, inclusive and equitable future Aotearoa.

The Māori Tech Association is a roopu that will aim to provide its membership with networking and collaborative opportunities, as well as coordinate the efforts of those Māori that work in the technology sector. It will seek to play a strong advocacy role for its membership. It will provide a safe environment for its membership to share mātauranga, information, expertise and learnings.

Appointed as CEO of Te Matarau - the Māori Tech Association on 29 July 2022.

Te Matarau means “the multi-faceted face”. We represent a multi-faceted and interconnected community of Māori, working in tech.

Te Matarau is a collective that aims to provide its membership with networking and collaborative opportunities, as well as coordinate the efforts of Māori who are working in the technology sector. Te Matarau seeks to play a strong advocacy role for its membership and aims to provide a safe environment for its members to share Mātauranga, information, expertise, and learnings.

The Te Matarau vision is ultimately to increase Māori representation and participation in the tech sector in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Ko Māui Hangarau is:
• A high-powered event featuring some of the best Māori Tech Innovators and Entrepreneurs from around the country. Our aim was to awaken, inspire and ignite our rangatahi!
• An event designed to capture the hearts and minds of rangatahi who have an interest in Digital Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship.
• An event that exposes rangatahi to some of the best Māori Tech Innovators and Entrepreneurs in the country, to learn about their journey, experiences and challenges.
Due to the success of the first Ko Māui Hangarau event in August 2018, and based on overwhelming demand, KMH will be scaled across the country in 2020.

Our key messaging:
• “If I can see success, I can be success!” – I can better connect with, people that look like me, sound like me, and have a similar story to me.
• “Innovation is ingrained in our DNA!” – because my ancestors were innovators, through whakapapa I am also an Innovator.

Lee Timutimu

Lee has worked in the IT industry for over 20 years, primarily in the IT support services space. He has deep networks and relationships into the Māori digitech (digital and technology) ecosystem and public and private sectors in Aotearoa New Zealand. He’s the Co-Founder of Ko Māui Hangarau and Te Hapori Matihiko, and Founder of Te Matarau - the Māori Tech Association.

Lee was born and raised in Whakatāne, but now lives with his wife and tamariki (kids) in Kirikiriroa (Hamilton).

In recent years, Lee has founded two separate advocacy communities that seek to represent and support Māori working in digitech. He founded Te Matarau in 2021, and helped to lead and grow the membership to 370+ individual members today. In 2022, he co-founded Te Hapori Matihiko, which now enjoys a membership of 600+ members. Before the founding of Te Matarau and Te Hapori Matihiko, there were no advocacy or support communities that Māori digitech practitioners could subscribe to or be a part of.

Lee is on a mission to help increase both the representation and participation of Māori in digitech. A lot of the mahi (work) he does sees him leading and advocating in this space.

"Visibility and representation of Māori in digitech is vital, because it plays an important part in inspiring the next generation of Rangatahi Māori (Māori youth) onto pathways into digital and tech. I believe any opportunity where we can come together to connect and represent our Māori communities in digitech is an important opportunity."

His latest journey saw him register a treaty claim with the Waitangi Tribunal on 19 January 2023, in order to highlight the digital inequities that currently impact Māori. #Wai 3311

“I have had the privilege of working in our communities these past few years, which has allowed me to see and experience first-hand many of the inequities that affect Māori today in the digitech realm” says Timutimu. “Whether it be the lack of digital pathways into sector for Rangatahi Māori, or the streaming of Māori youth away from STEM subjects in high school, or the digital divide that disproportionately effects Whānau Māori, the impacts of digital inequity prevent us from effectively participating in a world that is increasingly reliant on digitech tools and systems and digital literacy.”

Lee was a 2024 Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year Semi-Finalist, which recognised his work as an advocate and leader in the Māori digitech community.
