Day 11 of Ramadan. And I've been weeping on my prayer rug.

Not the performative kind. The kind where your face hits the ground and suddenly you can smell your father.

During prayer, there's a position called sujud,  forehead to the ground, the most humble posture a person can take before God. I've been praying on my father's prayer rug. And when I hit sujud, his scent is still there.

That's when it hit me. My dad never missed his prayers. For his presence to still live in that rug after all these years, that's devotion. And here I am, his son, living what I call the lightweight version of Islam. Missing prayers. Doing things I probably shouldn't. Telling myself I'd get back to it eventually.

My dad introduced me to Islam. He never pushed it because religion was pushed on him, and it made him run. So he led by example. Morning prayers. Teaching me Arabic. Showing me the discipline without the force.

I've carried guilt about that my whole life.

Ramadan is supposed to bring you back to your foundation. This year it did something else.

First week, I started crying during prayer. Couldn't figure out why. Then I hit sujud, face on his rug, and it hit me:

I never grieved my father.

Leading up to his death, as his health declined, his business suffered too. By the time he passed in 2020, he'd lost nearly everything. As the oldest son, I stepped up. Family helped where they could. But once we buried him, I just kept my feet to the ground and moved on.

Never sat with it. Never processed it. Just tucked it away like entrepreneurs do.

Here's what I know now:

Grief doesn't disappear because you're busy. It shows up differently. In your patience. In your anger. In your body.

As a Black man, I have to be careful how my emotions show up. The world doesn't always accept how we carry our trauma. So we bury it deeper. We push harder. We keep moving.

But that weight compounds.

This is the first Ramadan where I've felt this close to God. And it happened at 40. If you know the history, you know why that matters. Prophet Muhammad was 40 when he received the revelations.

I'm not pushing my faith on anyone. I'm just saying:

If you lost someone and never got the chance to grieve, it's still in there. And it's okay to let it out.

The strongest thing I've done this month wasn't a business win.

It was crying on my father's prayer rug and finally letting him go. 💯

Turning cultural signals into executive decisions

"Dad, is that a brain rot?"

That's what my son Harrison asked me this morning after we finished praying Fajr.

I was reciting Arabic. He was comparing the cadence to those Italian "brain rot" meme videos he sees online.

Most parents would ban the videos. I laughed.

Because it was a perfect cultural collision.

When I was his age learning the same prayers, I was just repeating sounds. I had no context for other languages. No frame of reference. I was daydreaming through Al-Fatiha, mimicking my dad without understanding what I was saying.

Harrison's baseline is completely different.

Thanks to the internet and AI, his brain is already pattern-matching global languages, rhythms, and cadences. He heard Arabic and immediately tried to categorize it against his existing mental library of sounds.

We look at internet culture like "brain rot" videos and see noise. Junk. Something to limit.

But kids are using it as behavioral infrastructure.

They're learning that the world sounds different. They're building mental models for language before they ever take a class. They're training their ears to recognize patterns most adults can't even hear.

Signal → Meaning → Decision

The signal: A 6-year-old equating ancient Arabic prayer to TikTok memes.

The meaning: This generation's inputs are completely different from ours. Their baseline for processing "foreign" is being rewired in real time.

The decision: If you want to understand where culture is going, stop looking at what people consume. Start looking at how it's rewiring their baseline.

The trends we dismiss as garbage are often the ones teaching the next generation how to see. 💯

What's a trend you initially dismissed as noise that turned out to be a signal?

I still remember the first time I was called the N-word to my face.

I was 13.

Too young to have a framework for it. Old enough to feel the heat rush to my face. The weird confusion of realizing a single word can try to shrink you in public.

This week, I watched a moment at the BAFTAs that brought that feeling back.

Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were on stage presenting when someone in the audience shouted that same slur. The room changed instantly.

But the part that made it harder to process was what came next: the person who shouted it reportedly lives with Tourette syndrome. The outburst was described as an involuntary tic.

So now it's not a simple story. It's a collision.

Racial harm is real.
Disability is real.
Stigma is real.
Impact is real.

And then the system made a choice about what the world would see.

This is what cultural intelligence actually looks like in practice. Not the easy moments. The messy ones.

The ones where two truths exist at the same time and neither cancels the other out.

Most institutions aren't built for this. They're built for clean narratives. Single villains. Quick resolutions.

But culture doesn't work that way. And the people closest to the signal know it.
