What got Dreamdata to our Series B?

A lot of things.

That’s not what this post is going to be about.

I want to tell you about something that got us off the ground; to our first customers, from zero to one.

There’s no guarantee it’ll work for your startup, but it worked for us:

Product Marketing Is Vital

When we started out, Dreamdata lived entirely inside our heads and on a few scrappy slides (some would call them ugly).

As a marketer, what I did was constantly ask and interview Ole and Lars about how our technology worked, what the product could become, and which tiny slices of value we could deliver right now.

I needed to understand everything - AND then translate it into something B2B marketers would appreciate. 

Then, with my almost non-existent web design skills, somehow get those words up on our website so the world around us had at least a slim chance of understanding what we did or intended to do with Dreamdata.

Lean Into Your Go-To-Market Strengths

As we started, we spoke with a lot of people about how to get off the ground, how to book those first vital sales meetings.

The many conversations with people of all sorts of skills, experience, and past success were inspiring.

But if you’re not careful, they can also be confusing. They can put you off course. They can make you forget what you’re actually good at.

At that time, the sentiment in Copenhagen seemed to be that B2B GTM had to be done through an outbound model. 

But no one on our team had experience doing that. 

We were two fantastic product people and a marketer.

We tried a bunch of outbound tactics to get sales meetings booked, but nothing really worked. 

So we stopped - and started leaning into the strengths we did have in our team → Marketing.

Since then, Dreamdata has predominantly been built on an inbound demand model.

Look to Hyper Niches

If there’s one book I’d recommend marketers read, it’s Tribes by Seth Godin.
The ideas in that book have shaped how I - and we at Dreamdata - think about marketing.

Tribes exist all over the world at any given time. You need to narrowly define what your tribe is and then identify where in the world (and especially on the internet) your tribe hangs out.

Dreamdata’s tribe was, and continues to be, B2B marketers.

Back in 2020, a geeky elite of these marketers hung out in the GrowthHackers forum, which was amazing back then. 

Every week, the best of the best would openly share their top tactics to impress each other. The five posts with the most upvotes would make it into the weekly newsletter, meaning your content could get in front of thousands of really skilled marketers. Exactly the kind of early adopters we were looking for.

I managed to publish three posts that made the top five that year - and I think one of them even secured the top spot. 🏆 🚀

Each deal involves an average of 6.8 stakeholders and requires 76 unique touches across 3.7 different channels.

One of the most revealing insights is a bottleneck:
