🏆 What it takes to win at the 'independent consultant' thing:

Can you keep your pipeline full?

That's it.

That's the game.

Of course you have to be able to deliver, with value and a unique offering but if you cannot keep your pipeline full then you're toast.

Maybe that's why I see around 50% of the 'independent consultants' in the circles I run in head back to full time industry work within 12mo or less.

It's MUCH harder to keep your pipeline full AND deliver client work simultaneously than most realize.

And if you do not have a VERY strong personal brand, with an excellent network backing you up, it's probably not going to work out too well for you, no matter HOW good you are at your craft.

And if you do not want to do cold outbound (I refuse to), it's even harder because you not only need a very well established personal brand but you also need a strong referral network: happy customers, technical & SI partners all ready and willing to recommend you in the scenarios where you're a fit.

So yeah, consulting might look glamorous at times but if you can't sell yourself consistently well in the marketplace (without being 'salesy'), forgeddaboudit!

💡 Home Depot reported revenues of US$159.5 billion in 2024.

Most analysts estimate pro/trade/b2b to constitute around 25% of HD's revenues - or roughly $40B.

✅ Lowe's reported revenues of US$83.7 billion in 2024.

Most analysts estimate pro/trade/b2b to constitute around 30% of Lowe's revenues - or roughly $25B.

In other words, Lowe's is playing catch up on the B2B side of the proverbial building supply fence.

Thus it made sense for them to acquire (all cash) Foundation Building Materials (deal closed in October, 2025) - despite the steep price tag of $8.8B (over 10% of Lowe's 2024 revs).

Foundation Building Materials (FBM) had pro forma 2024 revenue of about US $6.5 billion, which means Lowe's would expect to be repaid pretty quickly given the synergies they will also realize through the deal.

🎯 Notably:

FBM “brings digital tools that will strengthen Lowe’s B2B ecommerce capabilities.” (DC360)

FBM distributes construction materials and interior-building products to a network of 370+ branches serving ~40,000 professional customers, supporting a hybrid model of physical distribution + digital ordering for pros.

B2B IS the biggest growth opp for physical goods sales for the foreseeable future.

Retail often has WILD swings based on consumer sentiment.

B2B is the calm in middle of the storm, consistently notching up win after win, especially where digital enablement is a key focus.

💡 I remember what it was like back when I was working in retail eCommerce during BFCM...

🏃 It's absolute CRAZINESS during the BFCM weekend - or BFCM WEEK as it's turned into.

In the lead up to BFCM, eComm teams are prepping, creating campaigns, getting stock in, spending up HUGE on digital marketing and customer acquisition.

Cranking out emails at a furious pace.

Then the weekend actually hits.

📈 Volume spikes, sales go through the roof - eCommerce platforms creak at the seams, trying to stay up under the load.

Blurry eyed teams watch their site like a hawk, updating inventory, taking down ads for items that sell out and readjusting their promotions in real time as the weekend progresses.

And it usually pays off too, with BFCM often turning in bigger sales numbers even than Christmas!

No wonder merchants love BFCM...until January that is.

PS - I hope your Thanksgiving was as good as ours was!

💩 Well, looks like Deloitte's at it again with the fake AI BS in another expensive report for the government - of Canada this time.

🤦🏻‍♂️ Remember back in early October when Deloitte was SLAMMED for using fake AI data in a report for the Australian government?

Sadly, this looks set to continue with the major MBB type consultancies. 

Why?

So they can make more profit of course!

And because there haven't been and likely won't ever be any meaningful repercussions when they get caught out.

🦘 In the Australian case, Deloitte agreed to repay part of the contract: the firm will refund the final installment on the roughly AU$440,000 report after errors including fake citations and a bogus court quote.

🚫 What has not happened (yet):

- No evidence of formal legal or regulatory penalties (fines, disbarment, or loss of license)
- No public record of broader restrictions on Deloitte’s ability to bid for government contracts due to these issues
- No known class-action lawsuits or regulatory investigations (AU or Canada) tied to these reports

People, this is NOT the right way to be using AI!!!

You should be treating it as an inexperienced junior researcher and give it STRICT prompts that require real, direct citations with links that you can and must verify before using ANY data it produces in any work product.

The silver lining?

The more of these crazy stories that come out and the more I continue to use AI daily myself - the less I am worried about AI killing my business any time soon...

I am 100% convinced that REAL, DEEP, HUMAN domain expertise + experience and knowing the questions to ask, as well as the answers to question are going to be HYPER valuable for many years to come...

Making AI Software Automation Predictable 🔮 Full Stack Operator @ RadHash

I sat quietly while he looked over the term sheet. "I wouldn't take this deal"  he said pushing the paper across the table. And, that was all. 

He was one of the biggest investors, builders, real estate owners in the state of Arizona. And when he talked, you didn't ask for explanations - you listened.

I didn't take the deal. 

The deal - $300k convertible note with predatory terms
and - the first investor we had met with. 

It felt surreal
I'd been told "you'll never raise"
You're a nobody
Yet here was a term sheet
All we had to do was sign 
and the money would be wired to our account that day. 

But the deal was bad

At the time
I didn't know why. 
I was green
I knew very little 
I was vulnerable
still learning

What I did know
Someone who knew better said don't do it. 

It hurt 

The sting of walking away was brutal
That capital would have changed everything
It would take another 10 months to close our first deal.

The moral

Raising funds is a learning curve in and of itself. 
One mistake can cost you everything
All investors are not created equal
Money changes everything

Advice

Find someone who knows better
Ask for help reviewing the deal

Don't sign anything
Without a lawyer

Go touch grass! Adopt a spicy photobombing dog!

I don't know who needs to hear this but if your system isn't ready for automation, it's not ready for AI.

Many times - most times the Investor I am speaking with has not reviewed my deck. This is what I do first to ensure we are aligned and I protect both mine and the investors time.

Before every pitch I start with a few qualifying questions to make sure we are aligned. 


1. Are you currently writing checks. 
Because we are actively raising its important we know if you're actively deploying. 

2. When was your last deal / stage
Ensures they are aligned with the stage we are at and they are actively deploying funds. 


3. What was the deal amount
Ensure the check size, conviction level, and capabilities are aligned with our strategy and GTM opportunities.

No harm no foul if you're an investor who is keeping a keen eye out  and if that's the case then we suggest follow us for future opportunities.

A few facts before we get into the thick of the pitch

↠We are post product but pre-seed
We've invested our own funds to build and test the core components of the product, build a community, and board Lead Operators. 

↠We are raising to bridge on-ramping with compounding micro-fees. 

That means that for the first 25 months we are subsidizing our operations with your investment dollars while we on-ramp customers and get them generating revenue on their new software. 

Last I go over the basics of the deal

Deal Terms
We are raising $5M SAFE
With a 17M USD Cap
10% discount

If you're not familiar with SAFE 
SAFE is an acronym for Simple Agreement for Future Equity

Basically this means

“When we do our next real fundraising round ++ the one with an actual valuation ++ you’ll get your shares then, and you’ll get them at a better price than new investors.”

That “better price” comes from one of two things:

1. The valuation cap

For instance:
If your next round is valued at $20M, but their SAFE cap was $10M?
They convert at $10M ↠ making their dollars buy more of the company.

Or

2. The Discount

A percentage price reduction.

So...
If the discount is 20%, they pay 20% less per share than new investors.
They get whichever deal is better for them at conversion.

I just got off a call with a gentleman whose Angel group did not "Do SAFE" When I asked him why he explained that once they did invest on SAFE and got wiped out when a VC came in on the priced round. 

This can absolutely happen but it has nothing to do with the SAFE and everything to do with Cap Table Hygiene. It is perfectly normal for an investor to ask to look at the Cap Table - And the Cap table should exist in your Data room or through a SaaS Cap Table service like Carta.

Founders - It's important to ensure you're aligned with your investor from the beginning. 

The time and effort it takes to source investors and for investors to source deals is extraordinary. Getting the details of a deal out of the way first ensures you have a live buyer and your investor is aligned with your deal.
