Then my life took a turn of events. 

I started an agency with my mentor and was exposed to various niches in the marketing world. After years of agency experience and being exposed to high-level marketing strategies, the next path was clear. 

This is what led me to founding Ascend Social. 

The agency is dedicated to helping entrepreneurs and creators scale their personal brand through ghostwriting and email marketing. 

My #1 goal is to share my journey and insights to empower all writers and creators.

Am passionate about working with small to medium sized businesses to resolve problems.  And that passion creates the energy to begin a new endeavor, JohnWServices, LLC.  

My career has spanned a number of years with multiple businesses.  Primarily, I have worked with mid-size companies in regulated industries. Although most of those years were connected to community banks, I was fortunate to work in gaming, securities, insurance and consulting. 

Building teams and developing problem solving strategies is the common denominator.  Early in my career, I discovered that I could not do everything myself.  That realization led me to adopt delegation.  The result was the pleasure of helping others grow and succeed through their hard work and ingenuity.  If you are a leader, this is the goal.

As an executive, your perspective shifts as you work with the Directors and owners as well as staff.  Collaboration is critical to successful relationships at this level.  I learned to listen closely and read between the lines while helping to lead the organizations.

Developing strategies that meet the needs of multiple constituencies is a complex process.  It is more complex in regulated industries where the regulators are also an important stakeholder.  I have negotiated these treacherous waters on multiple occasions.  Many times it is a balancing act with compromise as the only viable solution. 

Telling the story is essential to finding common ground.  Too many times opinions are based upon incomplete information.  My job in many cases was to explain the company’s story in comprehensible ways to each of my constituencies.  Financial statements serve as a basis for the story. Explaining the “numbers” in terms of performance and what they mean for the future is the greater challenge. I have often described my CFO role as “a storyteller.”
