Technical Program Management. Its the craft of solving problems that come from scaled execution of strategically important initiatives.

That's a mouth-full! But it just boils down to the fact that TPM's get big complex things done.

Having spent a decade in various tech roles, I am able to successfully navigate the complex interdependencies of large initiatives. I practice the core skills of planning, stakeholder management, risk management, communication management, dependency management, system design, and leadership.

These can all be summed up in what I call The TPM Craft Framework: Program Management, Technical Versatility, and Leadership. In my newsletter (The TPM Craft), I regularly dive deep into those topics.

Outside of my 9-5 I spend time with my family, read books, write, exercise, watch movies....etc. No major special hobbies, mostly just family time.

I may not know everything, but I can learn anything.

😫 I've done the unthinkable.
🤯 I am no longer a Staff Technical Program Manager.
😅 As of this week, I am a Senior Product Manager. 

I recently made a lateral move within HashiCorp / IBM from the role of a Technical Program Manager to a Product Manager.

It was all fairly sudden, but aligned well with the goals of the business and my hunger for growth and learning new things.

The TPM community is...remarkable.
Such a tight-nit group of talented people!
It is sad to no longer have the title of Technical Program Manager.

At the same time, my mind is enveloped in the fascinating pursuit of expanding my skillset in the tech domain.

✅ Started my career doing Engineering to build cool stuff.
✅ Shifted into Technical Program Management to bring people together to build cool stuff.
✅ Now pivoting into Product Management to define the cool stuff we get to build.

Definitely the right next step for me at this time.

Promoted to Sr. Program Manager after consistently performing above my level. In this role I continued to work with Lyft’s Claims tech team in addition to multiple business teams (e.g. Risk Mgmt, Actuarial, Finance, Accounting, Legal, etc.) to deliver large, complex, and cross functional initiatives. 

Accomplishments
- Delivered business program to complete Lyft's second loss portfolio transfer
- Delivered business program to improve partnership and litigation management processes 
- Delivered business / tech program to onboard a specialized claims vendor to Lyft in <45 days

Sr. Program Manager

During my time in the hybrid Data Analyst / Project manager role, I found a passion for project management and convinced leadership to allow me to become the Claims team’s first Program Manager. In my role as Program Manager I noticed a gap between the tech and Ops teams, so I dove deeper into the Product & Engineering side of things to help the Claims Tech team deliver partner integrations and Lyft’s Claims tooling. 

Accomplishments 
- Delivered technical program to onboard Allstate, Liberty Mutual, & Mobilitas (CSAA) to Lyft's Claims APIs 
- Delivered technical program with Lyft's Claims Tech and product teams to launch Lyft's foundational insurance tools to 100+ associates 
- Delivered business program to facilitate two large scale claims portfolio transfers across multiple insurance providers

Program Manager

Taught myself SQL and convinced leadership to let me become the Claims team’s first data analyst. Eventually saw a need to jump in and help with project management, given opportunities I was finding through analysis, so I jumped into a hybrid role. 

Accomplishments: 
- Facilitated Lyft's v1 & v2 data feed integrations with Travelers 
- Compiled and got approval on Lyft's v1 insurance data requirements 
- Collaborated with Data Science and Data Engineering to inform v1 builds for Lyft's suite of claims data tables
- Investigated and resolved multiple high priority data issues with Lyft's partners in collaboration with Data Science, Actuarial, and Data Engineering teams

Data Analyst/Project Manager

Came in with no insurance experience, but a lot of passion and curiosity. Picked up insurance concepts quickly and started applying them to better manage Lyft's Claims vendors and assist with litigation monitoring. 

Accomplishments: 
- Audited >1000 claim files and provided insights to leadership on Claims vendor opportunities
- Monitored >100 pieces of litigation in collaboration with Legal & Claims vendor
- Assisted Claims vendor with complex investigations using Lyft's associate tools 
- Learned SQL due to lack of analytical resources and helped Claims leadership garner insights on the business

I helped keep the Lyft platform safe by investigating safety reports and taking action against unsafe users on the platform.

Over the last 6 years I’ve gone from Trust and Safety associate to Technical Program Manager - an almost unheard of transition.

I started with 0 technical skills or background. In fact, in college I studied liberal arts and philosophy. 

I became a TPM by doing the work. I learned how the tech works and actually delivered complex initiatives. That is, the projects I helped deliver immensely improved Lyft’s bottom line.

But, TPMing isn’t all the straightforward. It took me years to understand the role and develop the skillset. I don’t think it should be as hard as it is. That why I want to demystify TPMing and teach the skillset to the masses. 

So, if you are a new, aspiring, or even existing TPM, you may want to follow along. I promise I’ll help you learn something new. 

And if you’re not a TPM, you’ll still find value in what I write, because everyone should know:
