Camera folks wear black so that they don't stick out. So you can photoshop them out. We call them "media blacks".

I wear them sometimes. I've worn them a TON throughout my career.

But when Auxesys started this US RIA GTM?

"Media blacks" were the opposite of the effect I wanted.

So I showed up to a tier 1 wealth management conference in florals and shorts.

Yes, everyone else was suited and buttoned up.

Then I got right in there. Camera at the front of stage.

Florals, honkin' cam, wacky personality.

People wondered "what the f*** is this guy doin!?"

The other photogs and video folks in attendance thought "rookie!".

Meanwhile, the plan was being executed exactly as it was designed.

Sometimes we wear blacks - but if you see the Auxesys crew roll into your tier 1 conference full of suits, dressed in florals, shorts, and comfy sneakers - just know it's not cuz we're rookies - it's cuz it's on purpose ;)

Hard to believe this was 17 years ago. The teaser for the first full-length snowboard video I ever produced.

Feels like yesterday. Especially at this time of year as all the premiere season memories flood back with the change of the seasons.

Troy Erikson, David Craig, and the SICKEST crew of new imports to Whistler: Alex Murovec, John Versteeg, Logan Haubrich, Colton Showers, Scott McKenzie, Mike Chapman, Lucas Ouellette, Alex Beebe.

Most of us had just moved to Whistler from the Okanagan.

We crammed ourselves into a tiny 1 bedroom on the benchlands.

And snowboarded our little hearts out.

It was amazing.

The RIA channel has all the symptoms of an industry about to get disrupted.

Because the habits that built the RIA empire are the same ones that could burn it down.

Moving too slow.
Running old playbooks.
Minimal experimentation.
Insular hiring.
Preferring "tried and true".

Comfort masquerading as confidence.

Everyone’s optimizing for yesterday.
Perfecting “good management.”
And that’s exactly how incumbents die.

Clayton Christensen called it decades ago.
Industries don’t fall because they’re run by fools.
They fall because they’re run TOO WELL.

Avoid risk.
Follow the data.
Do what works.
Until the world changes faster than you do.

And there's no hiding from it.
Even for advisors, execs, allocators, and money managers.

The world is changing whether we like it or not.
FAST.

AI. Automation. Digital discovery. Behavioral science.
A new breed of founders and operators who don’t ask permission.

Who tear the old playbooks to shreds and piss on them.

And have plenty of incentive from manic Mr. Market to do so.

They connect wild dots.
They mix art and science.
They test everything.
They don’t worship precedent.
They spit on it.

And when the next wave of disruption hits?
It won’t look like a battle.
It’ll be a slow and drawn out. 
It might even last decades.

A quiet implosion of firms that never saw it coming.

And chose to act long after it was too late.
