Funny thing is, when you live your life that way, you are happier and more successful.

I went on a test drive because I’m in the market for a new vehicle.

Because I’m obsessed with my work, I can’t turn it off. I’m always evaluating sellers. 

(Side note, I walked in the door and the first person I saw was my good friend and business partner, Ken Lundin😂, who was in the middle of negotiating his own purchase, totally random!) 

The salesperson was a nice kid… but he missed a huge opportunity in the place most salespeople miss it: discovery.

Not because he didn’t know the product.
Not because he wasn’t friendly.
Because he didn’t have strategic curiosity.

LinkedIn is pushing “skills for 2026” and everybody wants to talk about AI, automation, tools…

Cool.

Here’s a skill that will never expire:

Discovery.

And let me reframe discovery in a way you won’t forget:

Discovery = Strategic Curiosity.

Not curiosity to be polite.
Not curiosity to fill silence.
Curiosity with intention… because you’re trying to understand a human being well enough to serve them.

Here’s what premium discovery should sound like, especially in a high-ticket sale:

You don’t start with features.
You start with their life.

You ask about:
	•	How they spend their time
	•	How they work
	•	How they travel
	•	Who rides with them
	•	What they value
	•	What they refuse to compromise on
	•	What they want to feel when they’re behind the wheel

Because people don’t buy cars.

They buy:
	•	comfort after long days
	•	presence when they pull up
	•	safety for what matters most
	•	peace and quiet
	•	space for their lifestyle
	•	and a vehicle that matches who they are and where they’re going

If you skip that, all you’ve got left is a brochure.

And here’s the punchline:

Great discovery isn’t just a sales skill. It’s a life skill.

Strategic curiosity will make you a better seller, a better leader, and a better human.

Ken and I debriefed on our experience and came to the same conclusion that the car business needs to stop listening to con artists like Andy Elliott and bring guys like us in to teach how to build relationships through great discovery and solution selling. 

People don’t buy luxury items for features; they buy them for lifestyle. If you’re going to sell them, you’ve got to connect to their lifestyle. 

I learned that 30 years ago, when I was selling diamonds 💍😉.

Most TAs are busy.
Very few are strategic.

Activity feels productive.
Strategy produces outcomes.

Strategy means:
• Choosing who you serve
 • Choosing who you align with
 • Choosing what to ignore
 • Protecting margin
 • Building systems before hiring

Without strategy, growth is random.

With strategy, growth compounds.
