Raphael De Lio is a Developer Advocate at Redis and a seasoned software engineer with over eight years of experience across industries and countries. Not everything needs to be vibe coded. In my case, I did not need to build a full calendar system into my SpringBoot app.

As seasoned developers, we know that handling dates, times, and especially time zones is deceptively complex. Subtle bugs are easy to introduce and often surface only in production. Even with coding agents, generating code is easy. Getting all edge cases right is not.

When I built a DevRel tracking platform for my team at Redis, the best approach was to integrate with Google Calendar instead of reinventing the wheel. 

The platform is built with Spring Boot. Authentication is handled via Spring Security with Google SSO using OAuth2. After authentication, we securely store and manage access and refresh tokens to interact with the Google Calendar API on behalf of the user. 

Event creation, updates, and synchronization are delegated to Google’s APIs, which already handle recurrence rules, time zone normalization, cancellations, and multi device consistency.

For the UI, I embedded the Google Calendar view directly into the platform instead of recreating a custom calendar interface.

There are caveats. Some browsers may block the embedded calendar due to cross site cookie restrictions, since Google must verify that the user is authenticated and authorized. But the tradeoff is worth it. We rely on infrastructure that has already solved the hardest distributed time and synchronization problems at scale.

Most importantly, events are visible and synchronized across everyone’s accounts: in the browser, on their phones, Teslas, Alexas, or wherever they sync'd their Google accounts.

Sometimes the smartest solution is not building more, but integrating with what already works reliably. 

Our role as developers is evolving. We must guide agents with clear constraints and sound judgment, ensuring they solve the right problem without overengineering it. That is how our experience as software engineers remains valuable today.
