Last year, I burnt myself out completely. 
This year, I'm taking work/life balance seriously.
So...meet my Dad! 

Today is Day 2 of my UK speaking tour, with the brilliant Timeline as part of their Growth Series for financial advisers. 

This time, we're in beautiful Belfast, Northern Ireland - and this time I've brought my dad with me. 

Why? 

Well, I've done lots of speaking gigs now. It's become my bread and butter and honestly, I absolutely ADORE it. 

I mean - what's not to love? 

• It's a short burst of social energy (ideal for me)
• I get to travel and stay in gorgeous hotels
• I get to meet interesting new people
• There's usually free food (I'm a sucker for free food)
• I get to talk about AI, and nobody can shut me up 😂

But it's also meant my time with family and friends is really limited. And to me, there's nothing more important than that time. 

So for this part of the tour, I brought my dad. 

Meet John Murray, drinker of Guinness, doer of puzzles, explorer of historical things and purveyor of the most convincing Belfast accent impression I've ever heard. 

He's brought with him his characteristic rejection of all things tech - we have been using paper maps, and meeting via the "be at X place at X time" methodology, as he hates his mobile phone. It all works perfectly well still - who knew 😉

I've carefully organised my diary so I'm speaking in the mornings, and then down time with dad in the afternoons. (Any Belfast recommendations for us, anyone?) 

It's part of my vow to myself this year: 

• Hard stops each day to curb the hours
• One full, laptop-free day off every week
• Prioritise time with friends and family 

In a couple of weeks, I'll be joined by BOTH parents on my final leg of the tour, Cheshire, then Harrogate and then one of my favourite places in the world - Edinburgh.

(Ahem...sorry to my beloved husband and equal tech-rejector Paul Upton, who has been left at home on dog duty!) 

So, to all those who also vowed for a better work/life balance in 2026, how's it going so far?

Be honest - have you stuck to it so far or have you already fallen back into bad habits?

I got asked a question yesterday: 
"How do I keep up with all the AI news?"
My answer is simple: 

Don't even try. 
You don't need to.

I say this for 3 reasons: 

𝗥𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝟭: 𝗡𝗼𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝗖𝗮𝗻

It's way too big for ANYONE to stay on top of. I know professors of AI, creators, trainers, speakers - not one of them has a handle on everything. 

Case in point: I'm a hyperactive perfectionist workaholic whose actual JOB is to stay on top of this news, and even I can't. 😉

𝗥𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝟮: 𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝟵𝟱% 𝗛𝘆𝗽𝗲

New, shiny things burst onto the scene, promising the world: 

"10x your sales in just 2 hours!"
"Replace 50% of your team!" 
"Switch your business into autopilot!"

The landing pages are super impressive. 
There are YouTubers calling tools INSANE.

Scratch a little beneath the surface and you'll find capabilities disappointing and security scarily non-existent. This stuff isn't ready for use (yet).

𝗥𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝟯: 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝗭𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝗣𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁

Wasting hours daily reading about endless new stuff prevents you from learning the basics - the stuff that actually works. 

It's infinitely better for you to use this time to: 

(a) build AI literacy (what GenAI is good/bad at, how to use it safely) 

(b) learn core skills (how to speak to it and how to build assistants - that's your Custom GPTs on ChatGPT, Gems on Gemini, Projects on Claude, etc.)

(c) apply those core skills to real workflows in small, consistent ways

Most people don't need to worry about automated AI workflows or agents yet. 

You can get brilliant results just using prompts and assistants. 
That's exactly what I'm doing - not an agent in sight.

I keep on giggling to myself lately, in a sort of wildly grateful disbelief. 

I left (a very dodgy) school at 16
Wasted a huge chunk of my life in a dark place
I first got on track in my early 30s
Started my first business at 35
Made it all up as I went along
Felt like a huge imposter 
Started to (somehow) make money
Discovered AI quite by accident
Did a massive, risky pivot 
Worked my Brummy arse off 
Built a powerful, talengted team

...and now I get to speak at incredible places like this. 

And stay at beautiful hotels, eating top-notch food. 

And have rooms of intelligent, successful people listen to what I say. 

I'm feeling very grateful indeed this Friday. 

Thank you Timeline for bringing me on their UK Tour. I'm enjoying every single second, and really looking forward to the final leg next week.

The UK government spent £4.1m with PWC to create a free AI skills platform for everyone 👏 
Is it any good, though?

TL;DR: Nope. 

(Massive glaring caveat: Obviously, I'm speaking from a biased place. I own an AI training company.)

👍 The Good Stuff 

→ It’s easy to sign up
→ It’s got Andrew Ng stuff on it

Erm…honestly, I’m struggling for any more. 

👎 The Bad Stuff 

→ The design and UX is poor, it’s hard to move around
→ The learning pathway questions don’t make sense
→ There’s lots of non-AI content in there, e.g. maths 
→ It seems 70% of it isn’t actually free

In all honesty, it doesn’t feel like a £4.1m project in partnership with a goliath like PWC, it feels like it’s been made in a rush by someone who wasn't paying attention (and doesn't use GenAI themselves). 

Yowch.

Have I missed something important?

I’m sick of seeing free AI courses that promise the world but aren’t very good. Most of them don’t actually help people with the 3 things that matter: 

1. What it is (and isn’t!)
2. Real, practical use cases
3. How to stay safe using it 

…so I’m building my own.

Today is day 1 of my first-ever speaking tour

The wonderful Timeline invited me to join them as one of their speakers on a UK tour, which starts today 🎉

Our audience is financial advisers, and I'll be speaking alongside:

A big question we'll have mixed views on: 
Will AI make us all stupid? 

My latest column in Freelancer Magazine digs right into this. 

TL;DR: 
I think not. 

I think humans are far, far more resourceful and adaptable than that.
IF we use AI properly, and not as a (pretty dodgy) cheat code. 

There was a time, about 6 months into using AI, that I found myself flailing if AI didn't work. I'd leaned far too much into it, but now I use it in a much more conscious way.

3 things I'm doing to keep my brain happy and healthy: 

1. Taking advantage of the absolutely shocking WiFi on the British rail system by closing the laptop, and using pen and paper, from memory
   
2. Making sure all my AI outputs start with beautiful human brain input - my own thoughts, ideas, worries, experiences

3. Early to bed every night + leave my phone (and all electronics) downstairs, swapped out for good old-fashioned paper books. I DEVOUR them.

AI is a very powerful assistant, once you know how to use it properly.

But remember - switch it off.
(While we still can...😬)

Right, non-techies...for this video you’ll need:  

• An ElevenLabs account (free is fine) 
• A very caffeinated cup of coffee to keep up 
  
Up until recently, if you wanted to build a chatbot, you’d need to go to a techie.  
Or an agency full of them. 

It’s a process rife with problems:  

• You have to brief someone without knowing what’s possible 
• Techie vs non-techie communication can be tough 
• You’re often at the back of a long queue 
• You're left out of the iteration process  
• It’s bloody expensive 
  
And often, the results were very ro-bo-tic and left you pounding “connect me to a BLOODY HUMAN” into your keyboard.  

Don’t even get me started on the voice chatbots.  

The......lag.  
Repeating yourself. 
Repeating yourself.

About 30% of the room put their hand up. 
You're NOT behind.

When you scroll through LinkedIn, it feels like everyone's an AI master, doesn't it?

Honestly, even as an AI speaker, my own feed has me panicking and feeling behind all the time. 

But step out into the real world, and the story is very different indeed.

I'm now halfway through my UK speaking tour with the lovely folk at Timeline. I've now visited: 

✅ Norwich (highlight: Assembly House hotel)
✅ Belfast (highlight: Belfast Bap)
✅ Birmingham (highlight: friendliness of my people)
✅ London (highlight: biggest crowd yet) 

...and today is 5th of 8 on our list, my old stomping ground, Bristol. 

Our audience for this tour is financial advisors. 

In every single room, the majority of people are still at the stage I like to call: 

"Dabbling with ChatGPT a bit and using it as a sort of Google replacement and it's fun but not really seeing what all the fuss is about yet, but sort of knowing there's much more to it, but not having a clue where to start"

Catchy.

My job puts me in a lot of rooms all over the world. 
From C-suite at enterprises to small business owners and consultants.
But it's the same story everywhere I go. 

Most of us are still dabbling. 
And dabbling is a great start. 
It's exactly how I learnt AI myself.

A few tips for you if you're a Dabbler:
 
• Over-explain like you’re talking to a human. Who you are, who this is for, what exactly you'd like it to give you. Treat it like an intelligent junior assistant who's just started.
 
• When something works well, save the prompt. One scrappy Google Doc is enough. The most advanced people I know have long docs of prompts.
 
• Ignore most of the shiny stuff online - agents, new tools. There's so much hype around it's ridiculous; most of the shiny stuff isn't useful yet.

But supply of (quality) AI training is very low 
And that's a brilliant place to be right now

To stand out and be that quality trainer, the key is to train from a position of EXPERIENCE not a position of RESEARCH. Anyone can research - and AI has made that even easier to do right now. 

The best AI trainers get hands-on. I spend at least 2 hours (often longer) every day: 

• Reading relevant AI news to the industries I train
• Exploring new tools, clicking about, seeing how it works
• Experimenting, building, mapping workflows out 

I also spend a lot of time listening and watching how people actually use AI on the ground. I've taught tens of thousands of people across a breadth of industries, countries and roles now. 

I've built and delivered AI training programs for some of the biggest companies in the world, and my business is growing fast (we grew 5x last year alone!)

I've learnt an awful lot, and I'd love to share it live with you.
