I take a new approach to aviation data and analysis. Our focus at Visual Approach is collecting and presenting complex data sets to draw insights on the aviation industry. 

With over 20 years of aviation analysis, I find insights and trends in the aircraft, network, and financial segments of the industry and present them in an intuitive way. I work with aircraft lessors, private equity firms, OEMs, financial institutions, airlines, and airports in a consulting capacity. 

Data visualization and story telling is my specialty, particularly in the aviation space. I help companies tell their story with presentations, Excel models, python coding including artificial intelligence and machine learning, geospacial analysis, motion graphics and animated data visualizations with After Effects, forecasting models, AP construction for continued data access, and web programming.

Delta just ordered 30 787s, resurrecting a 2005 order from Northwest.  Could this ultimately be a win for Airbus?

Our latest newsletter looks into the complex competitive dynamics of the North American widebody market.  In the meantime, we take a little stroll down widebody memory lane.

In 2005, Northwest Airlines ordered the Boeing 787, later assumed by Delta through the merger. It lasted until 2016, when Delta canceled the order, betting the house on Airbus widebodies.

Fast forward to 2026: Delta wants Boeing 787s again - at least 30 of them.

This analysis spans the 21-year saga—from the "Twenty-Twenty-Never" deferrals to the new reality of full widebody backlogs.  

Then, there is United Airlines.

We often discuss United’s "zombie order" for 45 A350s—an order that has inflated in size as it has been deferred into once-oblivion.   Things have changed.

Consider this:  Delta is set to become the 7th North American operator of the 787. If United finally activates its A350 deal, it would become only the 2nd North American operator of that type.

Sometimes kicking the can works—even if it takes two bankruptcies, a merger, and a pandemic to get there.

The growth of Turkish Airlines' Istanbul hub into a true global connector is nothing short of incredible.

Our newsletter this week looks at the international routes served from IST by Turkish Airlines since 2003.  

What originally connected Eastern Europe to Central Asia has grown into a global presence with over 20 destinations in North and South America, and almost as many to East and Southeast Asia.

The map shows new routes added to the IST network during the year they were added, and dropped routes during the first full year they were no longer served.

The threshold for routes included was those that operated at least 12 departures per year - allowing for destinations served weekly during peak months.

This map was created using a combination of Python and JavaScript, with many of the new libraries learned over the holiday break, thanks to extended limits from Anthropic's Claude Code.

A lot of excitement around the Allegiant / Sun Country acquisition.  Our take:  meh.

Our latest newsletter looks at the overall merger and how the excitement about complementary networks is a bit overblown.  

But the merger isn't terrible.  In fact, it's great for Sun Country.  Allegiant is not the worst fit. We're just not sure what it does, exactly.

From that level, we look at the two key factors we think drive value in the merger -  and one of them isn't Amazon.

United is having trouble keeping its PW4000-powered 777s in the air.
