And this was the look of disgust she gave me :)

But seriously, I love a margarita with a salty rim… 

...and I’m not giving it up.

Everyone’s going “sober” these days.

Here’s why I never will.

First off, let’s talk about that word.

Sober. I hate it.

It implies that if you drink at all, you’re some sort of drunk in denial. 

That the only alternative is complete abstinence.

No thanks.

If we’re going to label things, I prefer teetotal. 

It’s more accurate, and way less judgy.

But here’s the truth: I’ve never been a big drinker.

Until I moved to London at 35 and started working in the city, I barely touched alcohol. 

Didn’t even know what a gin & tonic tasted like.

Now? I love ‘em. 

I also discovered I quite liked a cocktail and now, I love a good margarita with a salty rim...

...because if I’m doing it, I’m doing it right. (Ooer.)

But I still drink sparingly.

These days, we don’t even keep booze in the house.

I’ll have a couple of drinks if Alex and I go out for dinner, with or without the kids and even that’s a once-a-month kind of thing.

The reason I’ll never quit entirely is simple:

I don’t need to.

I’ve got control.

I don’t binge. 
I don’t spiral. 
I don’t feel worse for it.

It doesn’t screw with my health or my goals.

But when I do drink?

I enjoy it.

I’m not falling into a vat of tequila and texting my ex. 

I’m having two, maybe three drinks. Tops. 

No drama. 
No damage. 
No next-day regret.

The benefit outweighs any negligible downside.

I have control. 

And for me, that’s the whole point.

But that’s me.

Now, I get it. Some people don’t have that luxury.

I know that for some people, alcohol is a slippery slope.

One drink turns into ten. 

It wrecks their sleep, their progress, their self-control.

And for them, quitting is probably the best move they’ll ever make.

But I’m not them.

And I was never a drunk.

So I won’t be joining the “sober revolution” any time soon.

I’ll keep choosing moderation. 

Intentionally.

Socially. 

Occasionally. 

A G&T now and then.

A margarita with a salty rim when the vibe’s right.

Not haters online.

Your friends.

Sometimes even your partner.

And it's confusing as hell when the people who should be celebrating you are the ones tearing you down.

Here's what's really happening:

Your success creates a gap.

When you were both stuck, you were on equal footing. 

You bonded over shared struggles.

Now? You've moved ahead.

You've proven that change is possible. 

That excuses don't hold up. 

That consistency works.

And that gap between where you are and where they are? 

It's uncomfortable as hell for them.

Because your transformation is evidence that the thing they keep telling themselves they "can't" do? 

You just did it.

So they have two choices to close that gap:

Choice 1: Use your success as inspiration. 

Close the gap by becoming better themselves.

This is the healthy response.

Choice 2: Pull you back down instead.

Undermine your progress. 

Push food. 

Guilt-trip you for "changing."

This is the destructive response.

And unfortunately, Choice 2 is easier.

So they'll say things like:

"You're obsessed"
"You've changed"
"You're no fun anymore"
"Can't you just relax?"

But here's what they're really saying:

"Your commitment makes me feel guilty"

"I liked you better when you were struggling like me"

"Your boundaries make me uncomfortable"

"Stop succeeding so I don't have to confront my own choices"

Here's what you need to know:

Their discomfort is not your responsibility.

Your transformation holds up a mirror to their choices. 

And that mirror is BRUTAL.

They see the gap between your results and their excuses. 

Between your discipline and their stagnation.

And instead of looking inward and saying "maybe I need to change," it's easier to look at you and say "you're taking this too seriously."

But you are not responsible for managing their insecurities.

You are not responsible for closing a gap they created by staying stuck.

You are allowed to:

→ Grow without apologising
→ Transform without shrinking
→ Succeed without dimming your light
→ Set boundaries even when it makes people uncomfortable
→ Own your progress even when others resent it

The people who can't handle the gap have two choices.

Do their own work. 

Or keep trying to pull you down.

And if they choose the second option? 

They're showing you who they are.

Believe them.

Don't regress to preserve a relationship that requires you to stay small.

The gap exists because you grew.

And you're not going back.
