2 months ago, I hosted an AI summit for lawyers but I don’t think AI is the future of law.

2 days ago, I was lucky enough to attend the Legal LinkedInfluencers launch party (thanks, Simon P MARSHALL).

At one point, Simon said something that stuck with me:

Since 2020, we’re grateful for rooms like this in a way we never were before.

And that was it for me.
THIS is the future of law.

Not the tools, not the tech.
The people.

- energy in a room
- chemistry 
- ideas sparked
- trust built face-to-face

We're all focused on AI and legal tech, but let's not forget that relationships got us here & they're more important than ever in this intelligence era.

7. Catching up with Suzanne Natalie Jeffers (and stealing her food twice in the night).

8. Meeting Craig Kelly for the first time like he's my old mate I haven't seen in years. 

9. Jono Randell-Nash quoting me from a podcast episode he'd listened to on the train down and me looking at him like he's weird. 

10. Meeting for the first time the lovely Charlie Moore CAA. 

11. Finding out David Milligan and I both lived in Hong Kong.

Most lawyer thinks AI is coming for “work.”

But new research tells us something different.

It’s after your SKILLS.

A new paper called "The Iceberg Index", says that things are progressing faster than law firms realise.

And it’s not just entry-level jobs affected.
It’s the entire hierarchy of skill.

Here’s what the paper says: 

1. "Commodity skills" vanish first

These are considered “visible” skills: 
easy to see, easy to measure & automate.

→ Drafting routine contracts, research, compliance checks. AI does these faster, cheaper, and at scale.

→ Billable hours tied to predictable work are becoming irrelevant.

2. Judgment becomes the rare currency

These are considered “invisible skills" (operate below the surface)

→ Strategy, client advice, negotiation, risk assessment.

→ The more subtle, contextual, & cross-disciplinary = more valuable.

Here's the thing.
There's a simple pattern through history: 

Every era required a new metric to measure VALUE.

👉 Industrial era → Output per hour mattered

Success was measured by physical productivity: factories, assembly lines, billable hours for manual work.

👉 Internet era → Digital workflows mattered

Value shifted to managing online processes, cloud collaboration, and the efficiency of knowledge work.

👉 Intelligence era → AI-human skill overlap matters

Now, the real value is understanding: 
- Which human skills cannot be automated.
- Which are amplified by AI.
- How teams leverage that overlap to generate strategic advantage.

Firms that keep measuring only “hours worked” or “tasks completed” are essentially blind to the future (according to the paper).

Invisible skills are “under the surface”.

The real leverage lies in the skills you can’t see, but can’t afford to ignore.

I just took a 1-month work break

All because of a decision I made 5 years ago.

5 yrs ago, I realised no one was coming to hand me opportunities.

If I wanted to become a digital nomad (my dream life) I had to become VALUABLE. 

So I bet on myself.

- Read every business book I could.
- Studied success stories.
- Went to networking events.
- Hours of YouTube videos & podcasts.
- Upskilled constantly.

Because I knew skill & knowledge were my golden tickets.

And it worked.

After years of: Learning. Trailing. Fighting.
I built a business & left my 9-5 law job.

Now I travel the world and work online.
And I can take breaks when I need them 🙌

That mindset has shaped everything I’ve built since.

Today, despite AI, I have the same mentality, the most valuable thing you can do for your legal career (that I can see) is building on your own superpower - you

What did I miss?

I always get asked how I went from lawyer to digital nomad entrepreneur. Here's exactly how

👉  1: Started with skills I could monetise remotely

Law degree → packaged as thought leadership, copywriting.

Ask yourself: What can you already do that someone needs? 

👉 2. Freelance first: Cold emailed 20 law firms per day for 2 years. 

Ghost wrote legal articles for many different law firms.

👉 3. Ran all client work remotely from the UK for 6 months before moving anywhere.

Tested tools, communication processes, systems before travel.

👉 4. Travelled strategically

Locations chosen by connectivity, cost, and personal productivity, not aesthetics.

👉 5. Optimise energy, routines, and focus.
(Travel lifestyle only works if you’re organised.)

Reflecting on almost 4 years since I quit my 9-5 job, I've come a long way from writing legal articles. 

I've spoken on international stages, hosted a top ranking legal podcast for 2 years, hosted The Global AI Skills Community For Lawyers and more.

...But the best is yet to come ☺️
