I’m James Sweeney, it’s lovely to meet you! 

Growing up in the Swansea valleys, I’m incredibly passionate about people - whether it’s our culture, background, passions or the ways in which we process and understand the world around us, it’s something that absolutely fascinates me 🌍

Having gone through life as somebody with a stutter, in addition to facing troubles with my physical and mental health, one of my biggest aspirations in life is to help shape a community in which I can help as many people as possible. 

I’m a very keen writer, starting my own blog page in 2018, called Sweeney’s Blogs, where I shine a spotlight on the topics that genuinely mean something to each and every one of us as people. The page has become a key part of my life, and is one of the reasons how I found out about LinkedIn too, as it goes ✍️

I run a weekly series here called Sweeney’s Song of the Week. For these posts, I shout out some incredible people, mixing in my love for music and making the world a better place at the same time. 

In October 2018, I jumped out of a plane at 12,000 feet raising over £900 for The Alzheimer’s Society, which has to be one of the best (and scariest!) experiences of my life 🪂

I help founders and marketers use video and LinkedIn to build real trust and generate real revenue.

My path here wasn’t straight. I started in the service industry, earned a marketing degree at Marist, and found a passion for video production. Tech, cameras, and music are a huge love of mine, so this photo is like a kid in a candy shop. 

Did you know I was interim tech director at a local church for a short time during COVID?

Live AV isn’t my world, so it wasn’t a perfect fit (hence my self-titled interim position) but with experience managing the cameras and the live stream it was a cool experience to stretch. Luckily nothing serious broke in my time there - I'm not a pro on a mixing board or lighting controller.

Now I still get to direct the cameras (sometimes shooting in special events) and manage the tech 1-2x/mo for video capture services.

And I got to bring in some buddies to really make it sparkle on Christmas!

"That's a great question!" is my biggest compliment, and honestly I hear it a lot. 
Does that sound like a flex to you?

For me, it's a funny one. It's not a skillset that is really measurable, but something felt by my clients when they feel interesting or understood.

Being understood makes someone feel really good, and sharing that golden moment when someone is ecstatic about a question makes for much more impactful content than any script.

And it makes me think - how did I get good at that anyhow?
Probably from the now hundred + interview scenarios I've directed.

I haven't really thought about just how many questions I've asked, but after 5 years of spending time on site with clients it's definitely something I've done more than most other things now.

Funny how this skillset is best when there is a camera involved, I find I still struggle to consistently pull strong questions when I'm at a networking event. Maybe pointing the camera at someone else gives me a space to think without much pressure. 

I've learned asking really good questions is a fun skillset, and one we can work on to make others feel interesting and well understood. A great way to show love for others, and they won't hate you for it either.

I always liked math more than art classes, and graphs are the perfect mix of visual and factual that can just tickle me. And these graphs tickle me.

This kind of curve doesn’t come from hoping or guessing, it comes from doing the right few things over and over until momentum and opportunities arise. 

Consistency isn’t flashy - there's no giant spikes of virality in here. Just someone doing what they do in person, consistently, on this free networking resource we are gifted to have.
