Over the last few days, a worrying trend has been spreading on TikTok that encouraging young people to take part in 'school wars.'

It’s being called the “Red and Blue School Wars”.

Schools are grouped into red or blue.

The aim is to fight students from schools in the opposite colour.

And this isn’t just talk.

Some accounts were actively encouraging students to bring weapons. Compasses. Metal combs. Rulers.

Every fight had to be filmed. Every clip uploaded.

It appears to have started in London, but let’s not pretend geography protects anyone.

The Metropolitan Police have stepped in and shut down dozens of accounts; they're also on high alert with increased presence around schools. 

TikTok says it’s removed a large amount of related content.

Yesterday morning, I saw hundreds of videos.

When I checked in the evening, most had gone.

I don’t know if young people genuinely planned to carry this out, or if it was “just a trend” that went too far.

But the fact it went viral at all is a massive issue.

Violence becomes entertainment. 

And then we ask why schools are struggling with behaviour.

If you’re a parent, talk to your children about this madness today:

🔘 Talk early and calmly. Ask what they’ve seen, not what they’ve done. Fear shuts conversations down. Curiosity opens them up.

🔘 Be clear about consequences. Not just school sanctions, but police involvement and a digital footprint that can last forever. 

🔘 Make filming a hard no. Recording or sharing violence isn’t ok. It fuels it and can carry legal consequences.

🔘 Push reporting, not reposting. If they see something , it needs to go to school staff. None of this 'no snitching' silliness. 

🔘 Remind them trends come and go. Videos don’t.

🔘 Trust your instincts. If something feels off, it probably is.

It's also worth keeping in mind that your child could be a victim in this, but they could quite easily be a perpetrator too. 

Remind me again why unrestricted access to social media shouldn’t be removed from the lives of our children?

If social media were invented today, knowing everything we know now, there's no way we'd allow children to use it.

After years of working with parents, schools and safeguarding professionals, I’m in no doubt: 

Social media should be banned for children. Or rather, social media companies should be banned from accessing our children. 

Here are 10 reasons why I support it: 

🟠 Designed to be addictive. Streaks, doom scrolling, rewards, all keeps children on the platforms. 

🟠 Algorithms amplify harm. The most shocking and extreme content spreads fastest.

🟠 Mental health concerns. Anxiety, comparison and body-image pressure are now common experiences for many young people.

🟠 Safety systems are failing. Age limits, moderation and reporting tools are easily bypassed.

🟠 Parents are stuck in a societal construct. Many allow social media simply because “everyone else has it”.

🟠 Children’s attention is the business model. Platforms profit from keeping them scrolling.

🟠 Grooming risks increase. Direct messaging and anonymous accounts make access to children easier for predators.

🟠 Harmful online cultures reach children earlier. Pornography, misogyny and harmful content spread rapidly.

🟠 Schools deal with the fallout. Bullying, harassment and safeguarding issues increasingly begin online.

🟠 Replaces healthy childhoods. Creativity, face-to-face, unstructured play, physical activity. 

I know some people will disagree, and I totally respect that.

🤝 I’ve heard we should remove harmful people and content.
💬 We’ve tried for years. Platforms still haven’t solved it.

🤝 I’ve heard young people won’t support a ban.
💬 Adults sometimes need to make decisions in children’s best interests.

🤝 I’ve heard social media can be a lifeline.
💬 Children shouldn’t need social media to cope with harms often created by social media. 

🤝 I’ve heard children need social media for the digital world.
💬 Scrolling TikTok isn’t the same as digital literacy.

I know this debate is more complex than what I've laid out, but this is all I could fit into a post!

Ultimately, we’ve created an online environment that many adults struggle to navigate.

Yet we expect children to manage it.

Yes, I support a ban. 

But I'm keen to hear what you think and what people that don't support a ban think about alternatives to keep our children safe from the huge harm on these platforms.

This is absolute madness. 

Instagram is going to alert parents when their children search for self harm or suicidal content. 

When the reason they're likely self harming is because of the very content Instagram keeps showing them. 

Instagram, how about you stop showing content to children that promotes or encourages self harm? 

An absolute piece of garbage move from Instagram.

Trying to look like they're helping when it's actually their platform that's causing harm in the first place. 

Parents should not be fooled by this.

International Women’s Day is meant to celebrate incredible women.

So today I want to talk about my wife.

Times are tough at the moment.

I’m building my business.
She’s building her chai business.

Three kids under five.
A home to run.
Bills to pay.
Non existent sleep. 

There's not always a lot to smile about right now.

In fact, there's usually a lot to cry about. 

Some days feel like we’re both just trying to survive. 

But what amazes me about my wife is how she gets up and goes again.

Preparing Mixala orders. Managing the finances, marketing and operations.

Cooking for the whole family. Washing. Ironing.

Being an incredible mum to three very intense little humans.

All while missing her own parents, who live in Tanzania.

And she still works part-time.

I play my part. I do what I can.

But if I’m honest with myself, I know I don’t do anywhere near what she does for our family.

Every morning she somehow gets up ready to take on whatever chaos the day might bring.

We’ve made her wellbeing a priority, and we try to look after each other as best we can.

But the truth is, she inspires and amazes me every single day.

I’m biased, of course. But I genuinely feel like the luckiest man alive.

International Women’s Day absolutely deserves to be celebrated.

So I’m making a promise to myself.

To do more and to make things fairer between us.

And to celebrate my wife a lot more than just one day a year. ❤️

“I always think my child could never be groomed online," a parent said that to me last night.

And I understood exactly what she meant.

Because no parent ever looks at their child and thinks: they’re vulnerable to this.

Yesterday I spent the day at Pioneer Secondary Academy speaking to students about online grooming.

A Sikh school.
My community.
A community where this issue has come up a lot recently. 

Grooming doesn’t usually start dramatically.

It starts with:

A follow.
A like.
A compliment.
A shared interest.
A move to a private platform.
It feels like friendship.
That’s the point.

In the evening, I delivered a session for parents.

One said: “I had no idea grooming was such a long process.”

Another said: “Our community is always reactive. Never proactive.”

That was interesting, because she’s right.

In many communities, including parts of the Sikh community, honour, reputation and what we can behzti (shame), play a huge part. 

Predators know where conversations don’t happen.

After the sessions with students, the school told me several young people went straight to the DSL to share concerns.

This is what awareness looks like; young people feeling informed and safe enough to speak. 

Sadly, online grooming isn’t rare.

You've got to just look at the data that's out there. 

This is why I do this work.

Not just around grooming, but digital parenting, online harms, and helping families feel more confident navigating the online world together.

Not to scare.

But to help communities go from reactive to proactive.

So here’s a question: when did you last talk to your child about how grooming really happens online?

“Why do people want to do bad things to kids?"

That’s the question a 6-year-old asked me last week.

I was speaking to pupils at Khalsa Primary School about online grooming.

And her innocence really broke my heart. 

She shouldn’t have to ask that question.

We shouldn't have to talk to children about this. 

A few days earlier I had delivered sessions to students at Pioneer Secondary School, and ran workshops for parents from both schools.

With teenagers we can talk directly about manipulation and exploitation.

With primary children it has to be different.

Age-appropriate. But still honest.

So we talk about things like:

🛑 people in games pretending to be children
🛑 strangers asking them to move to private chats
🛑 people asking them to keep secrets from parents
🛑 what to do when something online feels wrong

Because grooming doesn’t just happen on obscure websites.

It happens in games and on social media. 

My work isn’t about judging parents.

Most families are simply trying to navigate a digital world that didn’t exist when we were growing up.

My focus is simple:

🟠 every child should know how to stay safe online
🟠 every parent should understand online risks
🟠 every school should feel confident having these talks

So it meant a lot to be unexpectedly awarded “Super Citizen” during Khalsa Primary’s assembly as their guest of honour.

And the welcome was so lovely.

But more importantly, leadership willing to tackle difficult conversations to protect their pupils.

Digital violence against women and girls is abuse. And it's growing.

In the UK:

➡️ 1 in 2 women have experienced online abuse or harassment, with girls and young women disproportionately affected

➡️ Girls are more likely than boys to receive unwanted sexual messages and image-based abuse online

➡️ Most girls who experience online harassment do not report it, often because they fear being blamed, not believed

Digital VAWG often starts with rating girls’ bodies in group chats. With sexualised “banter”. 

With anonymous accounts, gaming platforms, private messages, and algorithm-driven misogyny that normalises harm.

And we're failing to stop it.

On Wednesday, I had the privilege of being keynote speaker at the CyberDIVA Conference in Birmingham.

I spoke about how digital violence shows up in young people’s lives, the platforms where it thrives, the role of the manosphere, and why treating this as a technical cyber issue rather than a safeguarding and societal one is costing girls their safety.

We also talked about something essential: male allyship. Actively calling it out when we see it.

Feedback from the organisers was so lovely to read:

"Your keynote was so powerful. I looked around the room at several points and it was complete, rapt attention. Not just listening, but reflecting."

There is clearly more we need to do in this space.

Digital violence will not be solved by better filters alone.

It'll be solved when we're brave enough to name it, challenge it, and change the culture that allows it to thrive.

The UK government is finally looking to take action. 

A potential ban on social media for under-16s.

And right now they are asking the public what we think.

A national consultation has launched called Growing Up in the Online World.

As a former Deputy Headteacher, and someone who now works with schools and families on digital parenting and online safety, I see the impact of social media all the time.

Parents overwhelmed by the online world their children live in.

Teachers dealing with online drama that arrives into classrooms.

Young people navigating platforms that were never designed with their wellbeing in mind.

And most people I speak to, whatever their view on bans, agree on one thing:

We are not doing enough to protect children online.

So what exactly is the government asking?

The consultation is seeking views on things like:

🟢 Raise the social media age from 13 to 16
🟢 Restrict addictive features (scroll, streaks)
🟢 Introduce overnight curfews for kids’ accounts
🟢 Require stronger age-verification checks
🟢 Extend protections to gaming and livestreaming
🟢 Set clearer safety duties for tech companies

Personally, I believe social media companies should not be allowed to access children.

But I also recognise that good people disagree on the solution.

Some believe bans won’t work.
Some believe regulation is the answer.
Some believe education must come first.

And that’s exactly why this consultation matters.

A huge decision like this needs to be made by every corner of society.

Over the weekend I was with some people a lot younger than me trying to understand the conflict in the Middle East.

Their source of information?

🔴 TikTok.
🟣 Instagram.
⚫ X.

They were scrolling through videos claiming to show the latest news in the Middle East.

But some of it clearly wasn’t real.

AI-generated images.
Old footage from different conflicts.
Even clips from video games.

Yet these posts had tens of thousands of likes and shares.

And the young people around me were asking:

“Is this real?”
“Did this actually happen?”

First, it’s important to say that conflicts like the one unfolding in the Middle East affect real people, families and communities. 

My thoughts are with anyone impacted and I hope there is peace very soon. 

But moments like this highlight something important for parents.

For many young people today, social media is their newsroom.

And during global crises, misinformation spreads faster than ever.

The algorithms reward emotion and outrage. 

Opinions matter and many people will share lots of, sometimes, strong opinions on social media. 

And whilst some people may not like the mainstream media, there is no comparison between authentic journalists and social media vigilantes looking for likes and views. 

What worries me most is that what children see online can quickly spill into:

👉 conversations at school
👉 arguments in group chats
👉 comments and posts on their own social media

Sometimes based on information that simply isn’t true.

This is why digital parenting matters more than ever.

[ASK] Where do you get your news?
[LEARN] How does misinformation spread?
[CHECK] Likes & shares ≠ truth.
[THINK] Pause. Question. Verify.

Social media is now the newsroom for the next generation.

But without guidance, it can also become the world’s biggest rumour mill.
