Die for Pay. 8,000 wishlists in 3 days from 3 vertical videos. (No ad spend and no Steam Fest). 

The developer started posting on TikTok, and here's what happened: ~300K views on TikTok, ~240K on Instagram. Three videos total. That's it.
What made the difference? Editing. And this is something I can confirm with 100% confidence from everything I've seen working in this space.

He studied a large pool of proven game videos, used AI and data to identify patterns in hooks, pacing, captions, and cuts, then edited his videos based on those patterns. Not guessing, not vibes. Reverse-engineering what actually works and applying it deliberately.

Two things he highlighted that I'd echo: on-screen text needs to be readable (sounds obvious, most devs still get this wrong), and the first 3 seconds need to be extremely compelling. You've heard that rule before. The difference is that he actually executed on it.

8,000 wishlists from organic short-form in 3 days is a real number. And it came down to treating video editing as a data problem, not a creative one.

I keep bringing up vertical video for games for a reason. Right now, it's one of the biggest growth drivers available to developers. But to actually make it work, you need serious watchtime across hundreds of videos to build pattern recognition, and then you need to try, fail, and iterate many times. This developer got results because he put in the research hours before he ever hit record. He edited based on what the data told him works, not what felt right.

Helping Games Grow: Marketing Expert | Founder at TrapPlan

Weekly gameTrailers breakdown. Top 6 trailers from the channel this week and what they might mean for each game's wishlist growth.

Karen led views with 170,891 on the reveal trailer, but the game only has around 20K wishlists right now. Big views, early stage. Lots of room to convert that attention into something real if they follow up.

Minos hit 120,292 views off the IGN Fan Fest gameplay overview. Around 44K wishlists. Gameplay trailers tend to convert better than reveals because people can actually see what they're buying into, and IGN Fan Fest gives you a built-in audience boost.

He-Man & the Masters of the Universe: Dragon Pearl of Destruction got 107,047 views. Roughly 97K wishlists. Known IP doing the work here, people already care about He-Man before they even see gameplay.

Dreadmoor pulled 73,787 views with its gameplay trailer at IGN Fan Fest. Around 100K wishlists. Fewer views than He-Man but more wishlists. The audience watching Dreadmoor is more targeted and more likely to actually wishlist.

All Will Fall is the interesting case. Only 60,482 trailer views but roughly 302K wishlists. By far the strongest base on this list. The trailer isn't driving the growth here, the game already has serious momentum from other sources.
Bounce 2 rounds it out with 56,883 views and roughly 2,250 wishlists. Perfect example of trailer views meaning nothing on their own. The views are there, the conversion isn't.

Important thing to keep in mind: these trailers on their own probably didn't directly cause massive wishlist spikes. What they do is give content creators material to work with. Creators pick up the trailer, make their own videos, and that's where the actual wishlist growth happens. The trailer is the spark, not the fire.

Designing marketing for an indie game on Steam and consoles often feels like building a plane mid-flight. There is no universal blueprint. No guaranteed formula. Just a constant series of small decisions that only make sense in hindsight.

Over the years, I have seen genuinely strong games go almost unnoticed simply because attention was treated as an afterthought.

Today, everything, especially short-form video, is a fight for seconds. People are not opening a clip to admire your level design or water physics. They are looking for a spark. A question. A feeling that something interesting is about to happen. If there is no small “wait… what?” in the first few seconds, the rest does not matter.

Curiosity is the only tool that consistently works.

The moment you start explaining mechanics or listing features, attention drops. Every frame is either a hook or dead space. In that sense, marketing becomes closer to screenwriting than advertising. You are not describing a product. You are structuring tension.

Distribution is its own trap. It is tempting to tailor every single video perfectly for every platform. In reality, simple cross-posting often works just as well. Endless micro-adaptations burn time and energy, and rarely change the outcome. What matters more is clarity and immediacy.

Wishlists on Steam have become the universal proxy for anticipation. But behind every number there is a chain of very small, very practical choices. What emotion to lead with? What not to show. Where to cut. Where to stop mid-sentence instead of finishing the thought.

A recent example that illustrates this well is Sensory Overload. The game generated around 18 million views on YouTube Shorts in 28 days. In the same period, it added roughly 28,000 wishlists on Steam.

That is not magic. That is attention converted into intent.

It also shows something important. Views alone do not equal success. But sustained short-form visibility can build measurable wishlist growth when the hook is clear and the transition to Steam is frictionless.

At this level, attention really is currency. And sometimes the strongest moment in a video is not the perfectly crafted ending, but the abrupt cut that leaves the viewer wanting one more second.

5.2+ million views on short-form. CPM landed at $1.6, which honestly surprised us too. And the part that actually matters: roughly +20K wishlists from the spike. For context, that's from shorts alone during one fest window.

We keep saying vertical video is the biggest growth lever for indie games on Steam right now, and this is exactly why. The cost per eyeball is absurdly low compared to any other paid channel, and when done right, the wishlist conversion is real.

Now the fun part. We've been buying creator placements for our clients for a while and got tired of doing it manually every time. So we built Trapster (link in comments).
