32 communities in Alaska have no running water in their homes.

Someone has to fix that.
In negative 40.
On permafrost that's actively thawing underneath the infrastructure it's supposed to support.

In villages you can only reach by bush plane.
Women engineers are doing that work.
Right now.
Today.

Nationally, women are about 15% of the engineering workforce.

In Alaska, that small percentage is solving problems most engineers will never face in their entire careers.

Permafrost destabilization.

Coastal erosion threatening whole villages.
$4.5 billion in water infrastructure needs over the next 20 years.

Roads that sink. Pipes that freeze. Airstrips built on ground that is no longer frozen.
These women didn't choose the easy version of engineering.

They chose Alaska.

And then they go home and be the mom who helps with homework.

The daughter who calls to check in.
The sister. The auntie.

The mentor who answers a text at 10 PM from a younger engineer wondering if she belongs in this field.

(She does.)

They're not "breaking frozen ground" as a metaphor.

They are literally engineering solutions in some of the most extreme conditions on earth.

While carrying every other role that nobody puts on a resume.

If AI and automation projects looked like the brochures, I’d be standing in a spotless room pointing at one very cooperative dashboard.

Instead…

I have dashboards on my phone.
Binders because some systems are still emotionally attached to 2007.
Coffee. Industrial quantities.

Also happening (extremely real):

→ “Can automation be installed by Friday?”
→ Data living in 17 spreadsheets and one emotionally fragile database
→ Training discovered to be less of an event… more of a personality trait

My favorite moment is when the chaos shifts into:

“Wait… we can actually do that?”

Dashboards become headlights.
Training removes friction.
Technology makes really smart people even more dangerous (in the best way).

Grateful to work with teams willing to learn, experiment, and accept that sticky notes are sometimes part of the innovation process.

PS: If you see me carrying this many binders, I am either teaching something important… or I lost a bet.

The SBDC Innovation Summit was special. 
Started the day off meeting up with two amazing talents Rebecca Van Wyck and Cara Fox. (See proof! 👇)

For the peeps who missed it:
Aurora was there to give a stellar intro.

Jason Child laid out the do's and don'ts of AI like he's been doing this for twenty years. 😅

Galen Hecht explained AI projects on a shoestring budget, with incredible wins.

Erik Williams talked infrastructure in the Arctic and the beadedcloud tech catching signals that matter, saving millions on assets before they sink into permafrost. Because yes, that happens here!

Pascual J. Reig made a video about Alaska connectivity and healthcare that I will be thinking about for a long time. "Rural" doesn't cover it. Frontier. A whole separate category. The Golden Hour is real, and Pascual made us feel the weight of that, even sharing his own experience walking down a mountain with a shattered vertebrae. Genuinely one of the best presentations I've seen.

Roberta Schwartz walked us through Houston Methodist's work. Drone towers. Biosensors. Healthcare tech I had no idea existed. Urgent and possible at the same time. (Also: she didn't need a mic. Unlike some of us. 😂)

Dell Gines showed economic development happening across the lower 48 AND Alaska,  then handed us his ChatGPT playbook like it was nothing. It was not nothing. Notebooks came out. Copious notes were taken.

Carlos Machuca and the Alaska SBDC making real magic for SMBs. GPTs built for Alaska, by people who get Alaska.

Small businesses. Big frontier. Unlimited potential.

Copilot Tip 10 / 99: This might be the most underused feature in all of Microsoft 365 Copilot.

Open Copilot Chat. Type a forward slash. "/"

A file picker appears.

You can reference any document on your OneDrive or SharePoint without uploading a single thing.

No downloading. No attaching. No copy-pasting text into a chat window.

Just "/" and then the file name. Copilot reads the whole thing.

I have watched rooms full of senior leaders learn this and go completely silent for about three seconds. Then someone whispers "Are you serious? I don't have to keep pasting docs over?"

Yep. Seriously.

This one feature turns Copilot Chat from a generic chatbot into a tool that knows your actual work and is one step better at finding the right things.

Try it! Type "/" in Chat ➟ Find a document ➟ Ask a question about the content.

It has been there this entire time. Now you know.

Copilot Tip 8 / 99 ➟ Every Copilot draft sounds like a corporate press release: "Dear esteemed colleague, I hope this message finds you well."

Nobody talks like that. Especially not you.

The reason it happens is simple: you never told Copilot who you are.

Here is the fix:

1. Go to your Sent folder right now
2. Find 3 emails where you sound like the REAL you
3. Not your most polished writing. The ones where you were just being yourself.
4. Paste them into Copilot Chat
5. Type: "Analyze my tone and writing style across these three emails. Describe it in 3 to 4 sentences."

Read what comes back. Does it sound right?

If not, push back: "That is close, but I am more direct than that. Revise."

Even better, take it to the next level - give it five things:

➟ My role and context:
I'm a [your title] at [company/industry]. I mostly write to [audience]. My emails need to be [clear / actionable / technically credible].

➟ My tone:
[Paste the 3-4 sentence description from Step 2. Edit until it feels accurate.]

➟ Formatting preferences:
I prefer [short paragraphs / bullet points for action items / numbered lists for steps]. I sign off with [your typical sign-off].

➟ What to avoid:
Never use: "I hope this finds you well," "per my last email," "please don't hesitate to reach out." Don't over-explain. Don't soften direct requests.

➟ Example of my writing:
[Paste one real paragraph from your best "sounds like me" email. The description tells Copilot what to aim for. The example shows it how.]

Now you've got something good - go here in Outlook AND M365 Chat:

---SETTINGS
---PERSONALIZATION 
---PASTE YOUR "VOICE GUIDE"
---SAVE IT

Most people skip this, or they simply don't know. And it's the reason their entire team thinks Copilot "does not work."

Authenticity is what builds trust. And Copilot just needs a little help. It just doesn't know YOU yet.

Copilot Tip 9 / 99: Here is the mistake even the early adopters make. 🤓 Yes, we are getting a little nerdy with these Copilot updates. Oh, well. 

They set Custom Instructions in Copilot Chat. Great. But they never set them in Outlook.

These are two separate locations. You need to do it in both.

In Outlook:
1. Open the Copilot panel (top right of the Outlook window)
2. Click the "..." menu
3. Go to Personalization
4. Chat? Same path. "..."➟Settings➟Custom Instructions➟Edit➟Paste➟Toggle On

Same voice guide. Same steps. Two places.

If you only did one, you are getting voice-matched output half the time and "Dear esteemed colleague" the other half. And you cannot figure out why.

The people who did both stopped noticing because it just works now. Both ways. Every draft. Every time.

Two minutes of setup. Permanent results.

📌 Save this for later so your Copilot drafted emails don't come off as ridiculously AI. You'll be glad you did.

Nobody in that room Friday was a tech person (well maybe one or two). That's exactly why I loved it.

Owners. Operators. People who close up at 9pm and open at 6am. Asking questions that honestly made ME take notes.

Over a hundred Alaska small business leaders. One room. Zero pretense. (See pics.)

Huge thanks to the amazing panelists who nailed it! Jason Child, Erik Williams, Cara Fox, Galen Hecht. 

We fielded a lot of questions.  

It was wild. And still,
Here's the number that feels almost unbelievable:

SMBs using Microsoft 365 Copilot are seeing up to 353% ROI over three years. (Forrester)

Three. Hundred. Fifty. Three. Percent.

Not for giant companies with 10-person IT departments. For businesses exactly like the ones in these photos.

And here's what that room reminded me:

The businesses winning with AI right now aren't always super techies. They're curious. The ones willing to ask a dumb question in a room full of peers and not care. Taking risks but making sure they're calculated ones.

That was Friday. That's Alaska.

The emails you dread. The meeting notes nobody takes. The report living in your head until 11pm Sunday. AI is coming for all of that. Not your job...Just yet. Your worst tasks.

Friday proved you don't have to be the biggest nerd in the room. (leave that to us). 😅
